i think we can consider this as a backhanded spoiler actually..if u look behind the subtext, it means dietz knew what cerberus really was and didnt put any thought into the ambiguity bioware usually has with cerberus.

Yeah, the red highlighted quote from TIM is just nonsense.

It's not as though he's ever pretended Cerberus is a respectable or legitimate organisation with 'credibility' to protect. It's not even that he's delusional and thinks they have a reputation to maintain. He's well aware of how much the galaxy and many humans hate his work, but he does it anyway.

The Illusive Man says stuff like

"Judge us not by our methods, but by what we seek to accomplish."

"Diplomacy is great when it works, but difficult when everyone already perceives you as a threat."

In fact, Cerberus' lack of credibility is the reason TIM gives when Shepard asks why he Cerberus isn't enlisting Alliance or Council aid in rhe fight against the Collectors. They wouldn't trust him, so why ask for help?

The only reason i liked the Karpyshyn books was that they expanded on the lore of the universe. The plot was always a bit weak, and the characters were quite simple, but reading the books made playing the game more fun.

A good example is how retribution gives a first hand account of indoctrination, and how reapers control their minions. Gives you a glimpse of how Saren must have felt in ME1.

Dietz's book just messes up the lore.

Not to mention that Deception is filled with plotholes and characters acting completely out of character of how they were defined in the earlier books.

Maybe I will be alone on this thread who actually likes Deception. It's enjoyable piece of literature if you don't take those lore inconsistencies too seriously. Honestly, I don't remember each Codex entry from the games, so errors don't strike on me to much.
I'm sure several lore problems will be explained in ME3. Timeline inconsistency is probably a result of several game story rewritings (what i mean, maybe ME3 had to take place a few years later, then the writers changed this and forgot to inform Dietz).
And finally I'm guessing fans don't like the book because it's not Karpyshyn's.

i don't like because even if you ignore the inconsistency it still sucks with how badly it's written

Wow ive been so tied up being upset about the lore mistakes, I laughed when you pointed out how poorly some of it is actually written.

How, why, was this ever released.

There are some pretty serious errors,  Like the half masked volus or Gillian's vanishing autism.

Indeed. There are many errors made in this book that CANNOT merely be "explained in ME3". It's not just timeline inconsistancies. You have people characters who died in previous novels being alive in this one, kids magically aging several years in the span of months, mass outbreaks of amnesia, people mysteriously growing out of being autistic, aliens who CANNOT survive if exposed to an oxygen atmosphere and standard atmospheric pressures doing so in this book and surviving, a race that tried to assassinate the Council not too long ago having an embassy on the Citadel, the Citadel mysteriously changing shape and apparently moving to another area of space altogether...

Do I need to go on? Beceause I could.

The point here is that many of the lore problems can ONLY be explained by shoddy research on the part of the author. There's just no way it can be explained within the context of the series. As for Drew Karpyshyn, you're way off the mark here. When I heard Dietz was writing this novel, I didn't care one way or the other. If it's Mass Effect related, I don't really care who wrote it as long as it's good.

For newcomers, watch the clip in my sig.  You'll be surprised just how accurately it describes Deception.

For me, I translate it as:

"You killed innocent people." - Several characters die in the book that people really liked, and in meaningless ways to boot.  They hadn't done anything to deserve that!  Or you could apply it to Dietz's writing itself, and how he commits character assassination with how out-of-character (and outright changed) he made them.

Or both.

"The means to an end." - Someone wanted a book shoved out to make money.

"You started a massacre!" - All the errors and inconsistencies that people are finding in the book...

It's just a massacre.  The book stands no chance.

Not to mention the massacre to the English language in some parts of the book,as well.

"I caused a revolution!" - You sure as hell did, Dietz.  This thread is where it started.

"YOU BETRAYED THE LORE!" - Self-explanatory.

"LOOOOOOORRRRRREEEEE!!!!!" - The sarcasm is just PERFECT.  Sums up Dietz's effort in understanding it.

So I was looking at other avenues to raise our concerns. It might be a long shot but we could try the publisher Del Rey. Here is there Facebook Page if anyone is interested.

And now I am really off to sleep.

I think I prefer the term Dietzian for this type of writing.

All in all, Dietz has inspired great confidence in me. If a person like him can write and be successful, then SO CAN I! Thank you Mr. Dietz, you magnificent man.

Honest to God this novel being so BAD has actually convinced me that if I got down to writing the ideas in my head for a novel, I could be successful.
