@ Butcher - The Wiki guys are still trying to figure out how to reconcile the events of the book with the rest of the canon, hence why there isn't an article yet. It's that bad.

wow. 0_o  I read through the google doc, so im aware of the canon errors.  But if the wiki isnt even putting it up with a *possible canon conflict*  tag or something, it must be really bad.  Wiki editors are usually pretty anal about documenting everything, regardless of fan rage.

Well, here's the thing: If they document this as canon...as BioWare has stated it's canon...then they'll have to put tabs on a bunch of other articles as well. Articles like "batarian" and "Tantalus Drive Core" and "quarian." There are so many deep-seated inconsistencies that it will effect a bunch of other articles, and it'll be a headache. Thus, they're waiting for some official word from BioWare as to its canonocity until they go through the pain of mass editing.

You hit the nail on the head. It'll be so much work sorting through all the errors in Deception and figuring out what can be worked in as is, what needs to be tagged as conflicting, etc, and then we'll have to add whole new sections to some articles describing the contradictions. And, as was stated, wiki editors are pretty anal about this sort of stuff, so we'd have to draft some new ste policies and such detailing what to do when canon conflicts like this, and...

Well, you get the picture. So yeah, we're trying to take another route first and maybe get this whole gawdawful mess disallowed from the get-go.

Yeah, I really would hate to be in your shoes...

Just popping in to say you guys are awesome, and I hope we get this headache dealt with so you guys don't have to deal with trying to crowbar this cluster**** of a book into the established canon.

You guys are in such a tough spot right now. I wish I could say BioWare would do you the service of making your lives easier, but I have a sinking feeling they won't make it that simple.

@ mckenzie - Sometimes egging others on is exactly what a cause needs. For my part, I am trying to find errors as I go along, and cross-checking with the Google doc. I'm also telling all my friends not to get this book, to come here first before they decide to get it. I've already prevented the otherwise-imminent sale of 6 books just among my circle of friends. I keep posting in here so that I can help convince others. If the sales numbers drop enough, maybe we'll get some answers. Hopefully we'll get some answers just because of all the media attention this has attracted.

Then down the line retcon it out of existence without fanfare in future books.

Invasion seems to have already done that.  It doesn't acknowledge the events of Deception at all, just Retribution.

Hopefully it becomes a distant memory that BioWare refuses to acknowledge ever taking place.

so much attention has been given Deception for all the wrong reasons. people should REALLY be talking about Dragon Age: Asunder! now that's a good yarn.

people just love to whine when they could be praising instead!

It's a very good read, I enjoyed it.

But David Gaider is the lead writer and notorious for not only knowing the universe inside out but creating it. The scenarios don't really compare.

That's the first time I've posted a pic in the thread, actually, since I'm hoping we limit our pic usage in order to avoid having the thread shut down. But I was watching that vid again, paused on that face and it was just... just...

I had to.

If this was a game, not book, Martin Sheen would be like that and saying "you can't be serious".

Penny Arcade has posted a comic and discussed it now, as well.

Comic is up, but today's news commentary isn't up quite yet.

I'd definitely say that's the biggest step out of all the publicity. I said near the beginning of the thread that Penny Arcade would probably be the best news spreader(or something like that.).

Also, great letter about two pages back. :)

Yep, though, I kinda wish Shepard did fly a x-wing and destroy cybertron, sounds like an improvement.

I don't think it can really be said enough on here, this book is really bad. Honestly, I don't even care that much about the continuity problems. It's ancilliary fiction by an author not directly involved with Bioware, and as such, is not really a barometer to me of how much the game's writers cares about their universe. I wish they had scraped the book, but that might not have been an option. All the in-game proof (and previous novels and comics) have shown that they do care a lot.

With that said, even if these continuity problems WERENT littered throughout the book, the level of writing is really abysmal. I wasn't expecting anything great here, but I found the book unreadably choppy. It really felt like a rough draft by a first time writer, not a published product.

The real shame here, as has doubtlessly been said throughout the thread, is that the book actually kills a few characters and changes some pieces of the universe in real ways. I wish it was bad and easily disposable, but it's hard to cut it out of canon entirely.

Noooooo. Kotaku was our big break- we just needed ONE site to catch on, and the rest would follow.

It was a domino effect- other sites visit Kotaku for news and then cover what Kotaku covers, so it spread.

IGN was our biggest achievement, because they went out and contacted Bioware about it.

Penny Arcade is a good one to grab the attention of, but its certainly not IGN insofar as making progress to disavow this novel goes.
