The book is dark to the point of nihlism. Though the lack of common sense makes it hard care about the charecters.

Yep. Not a great return apperance for Gillian.

Also, kudos (and by kudos I mean my neverending hate) for Dietz for both queer and disability erasure! Hendel, gay? No! Lemme write him "oogling" an asari dancer with Anderson like a proper bloke (and I'd maybe let that slide as an indication for his bi-sexuality if it weren't for the comment about "going to bars to look for the company 'of the opposite sex'" a couple pages after that gem. No gay people in the future! Got it!).

You know I was going to let the whole "I killed the one and only undeniably gay character in the entire frakking Mass Effect Universe" thing slide because I am generous like that and didn't want to be seen as harping on it.  But first he turns him straight (I'm definately not giving the benefiet of the doubt here) and then he kills him?

#$%^ you Mr. Dietz.

....What? He must have decided to convert to heterosexuality around the same time Gillian used Level Nine biotics to accelerate her aging process.

=/

I knew this would happen. Dietz ruins the one good gay character in Mass Effect.

And Asari are female. Look at the codex. And they are not irresistable.

Off topic just for a moment. Yes, the codex clearly calls them an all-female race. Both in ME1 and 2. But at some point Casey Hudson came out and publicly said they are mono-gendered, in response to someone saying that there was a lesbian romance in ME1. IMO, someone in their PR department decided that was what they were going to say.

Regardless, in my canon, I did not romance a mono-gendered alien. My Liara is all woman.

Back on topic.

We lost a gay to the terrible Power of Retcon.

And mono-gender means "one gender". And that gender is female for the Asari.

From the preview:
Leng, Kim, and a couple of their buddies had been in a bar on the Citadel that fateful evening doing what off- duty marines do. Which is to drink, hit on members of the opposite sex
That section is about Leng, not Hendel. He difinitely ogles an Asari. Also, I feel like I might be defending this book now. I think I might die.

To the other pointed, I'll look for the quote, but the suggestion was that there was no lesbian LI in ME1 because Liara is not female.

It's horrible! He was the one bright light in ME for LGBT representation when it almost appeared there would never be any. And now Dietz took him away! Image IPB

Seriously, Bioware. Disown this trash.

Bioware is all over the place in regards to asari being female, asexual, or just alien.

Mac and some other devs have been calling the Asari female for some time.

Mac said his favorite female character was Aria.

Totally agree. Just pointing out where some of the argument came from. You will still find people on BSN who will tell you they are not.

The ME3 codex says that the asari are an all-female monogendered race that is not asexual, so hopefully that will put it to rest.

Finally found the quote from Casey

In Mass Effect, as a female Commander Shepard you could have a romance with the female-looking yet asexual asari, Liara.

That's where people got confused. Now, Let's definitely put it rest, because it's off topic.

Hey, this book is terrible, right?

He took an asari to the character. Between the biotic air-kisses and the static electricity they produce, a man can only endure so much.

I honestly believe that Dietz was totally unaware Hendel was gay. I just assumed that all men would ogle Asari dancers. At least there is a vague reason for the age difference, even if it's a horrible one.

The funny thing is, aside from Gillian wanting revenge for her father, this book literally could take place before Retribution. Think about it; Leng is hilariously incompetent and doesn't even get a squad, Anderson is bored of his old job and has nothing to do, Aria hasn't revamped Afterlife yet and has terrible lackies, and most glaring of all there isn't a single mention of Shepard

Not to mention the fact that nothing plot relevant happens in this book, and that pretty much everyone in Retribution is still alive, and it all makes sense. Kai Leng screwed up, then went on to be a compete badass in Retribution. Take that, Dietz!

The gay character in ME3 demonstrates that people can definitely not care for the Asaris' allure.

Another important point is that in a lot of people's canon it literally CANNOT take place. In my universe, Anderson is the human council member for the entire time this book takes place.
