You did not just bring up Cooper Lawrence.

She WOULD write this(if paid boatloads).

Hey, at least she apologized for not doing the research.  Dietz takes pride in his tale.

Thats why I don't hate Cooper Lawrence. She made a huge mistake and apologized, even if it was likely to save her book's sales and reviews(which didn't recover).

Thing is, Cooper was SHOWN that she was wrong.

Dietz hasn't really been shown anything yet. He was told to look at this thread, but do you think he did? I highly doubt it.

For Dietz to realize he dun goofed, someone has to actually SHOW him whats wrong.

I don't care if he knows that he ****ed up this book or not. As long as he never writes another ME novel again I'm happy.

I don't think he actually cares that he ****ed this book up or not.
With the descriptions like
"So T’Loak read, and read, until she was couldn’t read anymore. Then she took a nap on the couch that took up most of one wall. Two hours later she got up and read again."
You can just see how he just wanted to end it as soon as possible.

Yeah - thats the kind of impression I got.

Tasked with writing a book - went through the motions and pumped it out as quick as possible with as little work done on it as possible.

Like how I did most of my high school assignments.

Wow... is this canon? Can it be shot out of a cannon instead?

That just screams lack of effort and enthusiasm.

Here's my theory on how Deception came about.

Two weeks before the deadline.
Dietz: OH ****. I signed on to write the Blast Affects book, didn't I? I should probably do some research before writing it...

One week before the deadline.
Dietz: OH ****. I should have been researching for the Malt Efreets book, damn you Minesweeper!

Six hours before the deadline.
Dietz: And I'm done, who says that Google Image search isn't a proper research tool?

I'm more annoyed that the novel got approved in this state.

Yes, he made a lot of mistakes. Hell the whole novel is a mistake.

Yes, he didn't research the material enough to know whether what he was writing was canonically sound.

But the fact that the novel was APPROVED, is what scares me.

Yeah, it's understandable that they hired the guy - hell, maybe they thought he would do a decent job. But the fact that they saw what he churned out and thought it was worthy of publishing? Shameful.

It's be nice to have a comprehensive list of confirmed inaccuracies from the lore. Maybe there could be some sort of collaborative Google Docs (or similar) that could then be used to make the case. Although nothing would come of it I imagine, maybe at least Dietz wouldn't be rehired for anything by Bioware and the people that approved it would be more watchful in the future? Might be wishful thinking.

Its one thing if you don't religiously fact check Drew's novels- he wrote the damn games. Or at least wrote parts of them. He also wrote the first three novels, so he knows his own story and if he makes a mistake, it was an oversight.

But if you're hiring a merc writer who knows nothing of the lore prior to being signed on for the project, you have to know and expect that there will be a ton of mistakes.

Yet here you have it. A book riddled with lore issues, and its being sold to the public.

That's not right. If they keep selling it, fine. Just tell everyone the novel isn't canonical, is being disavowed, and we'll be alright.

I don't understand why Bioware wouldn't assign one of their writers to oversee this if they couldn't get Drew on it. Jeez.

You know I was counting on this book to help me pass the time between it's release and the demo, I just never imagined it be because it was so godawful.

Telling my stepbrother about the novel actually got him less excited for Mass 3.

So, I've written up Deception's Codex entry for ME3:

Codex/Publications

Deception

Written by human author William C. Dietz, the notorious subliterary-nonsensical novel Deception focuses on several lives warped or destroyed by bad writing, lack of research, and epic editorial fail. Following the succesful springing of the Citadel trap in 1983 (or something) and the accelerated rise of Level Three biotics in the galaxy, Kai Leng, AKA "The Cabinet Intruder", ate David Anderson's (who as you know still works for the Council despite quitting in the last novel) cereal. Level Three biotic prodigy Gillian Grayson, an impossibly 18-year-old, allegedly autistic girl, who as you know can launch a "reave" and trigger a "charge" and make people @#$%ing explode with a "warp", suffered for no readily apparent reason and to no actual purpose. Like everyone else in the novel, she was ensnared in a web of stupidity involving the Biotic Underground, a group of idiots trying to rule the galaxy by holding Biotic Pride Parades on Omega to get street cred, and extending to the Illusive Man, who basically just hangs out and smokes and talks about "credibility" a lot. Also, there's some bullsh*t about the Council. Several dozen lawsuits for intentional infliction of emotional distress were filed in the wake of its publication.

You would think it would make him more excited. I mean, at least it isn't Deception.

I know I'm less excited for ME3, since now we know what kind of an antagonist we're going to face at least in the beginning of the game... <_<

Not enough to cancel my pre-order or anything, but still.

Nah, he's still worried. Has been ever since Drew stopped being the Lead Writer and Mac took over the role.

The only good publicity that can come from this is if we suddenly found Kai Leng on Wheaties boxes.

Well I don't know. Telling people about this novel has got to be illegal under something. Why hasn't the UN intervened?

I wonder how long it'll take till we get a response, if we ever do.

I half expected a developer to come in here by now and say something like,

"I enjoyed the book. *smiley face here*"

Then we'd all respond with, "How much did you get paid to say that?"

Then I'd come in and say, "Be nice guys, forum positivity, remember?"

Then someone would accuse me of sucking up, and someone defending me would call them a Meanie McMeanie Pants.

And then we'd go back to making cereal jokes. With or without references to toothbrushes.
