I'm not talking about the book though, I'm talking about the series in general. The Mass Effect world.
Surely allowing this piece of work to even be released is insulting. It degrades the subject matter and it's not as if Deitz's shortcomings as a writer aren't unknown. Perhaps Bioware saw all the negativity as exaggerated and decided to trust in his 'skills' but then did they not read what was being presented to them?

I know I'm probably exaggerating and I realise that this book is a very small thing in the scope of things, it's just confusing that it's allowed to exist.

Yeah - but there are some interesting things in some of the comics - and the anime doll of Liara - and a few other bits and pieces that seem inconsistent with the ME world.

I guess its all about market saturation.

When something is hot, you'll sell themed ash trays to people who don't smoke - even if the ash tray is made of flammable material.

I think there's a difference though between actual books meant to expand the world of Mass Effect and stuff like the Liara doll and so on. I realise the latter is gonna exist. It makes sense and doesn't really degrade the world. It's all a part of hyping everything up. The former however should not be allowed to be ground into the dirt. Obviously people who care about the series are going to buy and/or read the books and when you already have a precedent of decent stories being told, it's insulting when something of Deception's calibre comes prancing about.

Oh its definitely a "What the..." moment if you're a fan who is familiar with the world.

But all popular franchises have had this happen to them.

Star Wars and Star Trek have both had books published that totally fly in the face of the original material. Even the heavily hyped and 'canon' Star Wars books have some stuffed up lore in them.

I'm not saying its right, and I hate it, but I think its at a point where quantity of Mass Effect themed products and media has now surpassed quality.

I think it's important to remember, should BioWare be listening in, that we like that books are being written about our favorite characters. We just don't like them being written by people that doesn't give a flying f.... about the franchise. Or decent writing in general. Neither should you guys.

Come on, you could probably have found a better, and more original story on fanfiction.net. Honestly. And I'm not saying they're any good either.

I honestly believe I could've written a better story, but it doesn't make sense for me to say that unless I'm put through the hassle of being a professional writer contracted to...well, write.

As a fan, I've got all the time in the world to write a better Deception than what we got. We don't know all the details behind its creation.

Still, that doesn't change what we got. And what we got was pretty darn bad.

I stress that you all send PM's to a developer or moderator asking them to push the idea higher up in the chain.

"What would be the best way about contacting someone higher up in the Bioware chain? Can you pass a message along?(would be easier on my end)

Because I'm so taken aback by what I read of Deception and the UNIVERSAL negative reaction on the forums that I am calling for this novel to be disavowed from the lore.

Too many fundamental and minor mistakes, very poorly fact checked and written. We're all either laughing at it or feeling quite sad about it.

And there's an entire near 50 page thread with nothing but criticism for it.

Deception needs to be disavowed from the lore. That's my statement.

Those are my basic all encompassing reasons, and if anyone wants to know why we all feel that way, the specifics are at the link over here- http://social.biowar.../index/9070774/"

I Wish you and everyone going with you best of luck, even though I'm not going to message moderators or other BioWare employees. I support your idea but I'm not sure if I could sum up my thoughts in a costructive or meaningful way.

I think it would also be important to keep this thread alive for customer feedback. Stanley Woo wrote in couple of other topics that the best and practically the only way to get message through is to vote with your wallet.

I think a lot of people here feel that Deception isn't worth $7.99 and personally I would't be surprised if some of us felt asking an euro cent (or equivelant) is too much for this product.

In previous thread Didy predicted that Deception is going to need it's own errata page in ME Wiki. Well, it does and it's going to be a long one. I wish the best for him because what he finds can be added to Wiki but the task is daunting. There are just so many ridiculous and stupid things that at least I get distracted by them and that quality of writing is atrocious even by standards of someone who doesn't speak English as native sure isn't helping. I mean if I were to write and publish something in English, as sure as hell would hire someone who manages the language to help me.

I think it would be great if people can keep this thread funny. I'm not heavily invested in any of the chracters but even I was disgusted how things were handlend in Deception. What I have seen on forums, there are people who really liked these chracters and I guess keeping things on light mood would be the best service for their fans.

What makes things hurt especially is that it felt like Drew's characters were killed off by Dietz.

You know, like he had no emotional investment in them, so he said, "Who cares?" and ruined them, or outright killed them.

Ergh.

It's actually worse than that if you think of it. Hudson and Walters approved this all. It's difficult for me to get past that.

My words. You can see on this book, that Dietz is most interested in Leng, his version of Nick and Biotic underground. They getting inadequate space and assumed main characters Anderson and Kahlee are only dead weight for him. Even Gillian, who he unfortunatelly turned in postautistic badass, spare half of the book by shopping (really). Image IPB

...What.

Well, you know those women types! Haha! They sure do like shopping, right? Right guys! You know what I'm talking about! High five.

Good grief. I almost - almost - want to read this just to fully understand how awful it sounds. But then I'd have to pay for it and give the impression that I actually want it. Blurgh.

No need to buy it. Find some poor soul, who bought it, and keep checking his garbage can. Two, three days and you are another unlucky owner of Deception. Image IPB

I imagine I'd have a hard time reading the pages after the previous owner vomited all over them in a combination of loathing and disgust, though.

Well it certainly provides the atmosphere.
It's still a better descriptive language than what's used in the book.

Challenge accepted, LPPrince. There are my first ten cannon mistakes in Deception. Everyone can continue, just please keep it on purely ME mistakes, things like cornflakes are only Dietz's stupidities, use same numbering and formal language in case, we someday send it to BW as proof of Dietz's incompetence, and donť repeating them. We will see, how incorrect this I'm-proud-on-it book is. Image IPB

Cannon mistakes in ME: Deception

  • Gillian's autism - now she, by her own words, grew up from it, which is impossible
  • Quarian's names - titling kvarian Fothar vas Maynar (and others) like Maynar means, you adressed them by name of their ship, not by their own name.
  • Gas suckers - quarians breathing air, their masks only looks like gas mask, their function is filtration of air
  • Claiming that Hendel never visit Omega before - Hendel was on Omega in Ascension whole three chapters
  • Hendel can't know that Anderson and Kahlee are together and on the Citadel - they got together after Hendel leaving with quarians and Kahlee had no contact with them (dialog between her and Grayson in Retribution and fact, that Gillian don't know about father's death)
  • Friendship of Gillian and Nick - there was only one and last contact between them in Ascension. Nick overthrow her milk and she went mad and nearly kill him
  • Gillian knowing about her adoption - nothing suggest this in Ascension, in fact Grayson had strict order from TIM pretending, he is her real father
  • Gillian claiming that child in Academy tormented her  -  nothing suggesting that, in fact they only ignoring her, incident with Nick was unique
  • Tantalus drive core on batarian ship - Tantalus core was high secret experiental drive core using only on Normandy, batarians can't have it
  • Aria T'Loak's biotic - Aria is very strong biotic, but in Deception she need her bodyguards to put barrier on her

Well now I know to give this one a complete skip, glad I didn't bother to pre-order it. I'll just read the summary somewhere and save myself the pain and desire to torture the author for producing such a piece of drivel.

ps.  Bioware what were you thinking to let this be published in such a state.

Thanks go to Dietz for his inspiring, though unwitting, fantastic star-shaped jewelry of a meme mine. And to you guys for this tears-of-joy-and-grief-inducing discussion.

After reading the horrible excerpt, I have decided to wait out until Mass Effect 3 by rewriting Deception to be true to established canon (Not to mention story). For those who want to check it out, the link is below:

http://www.fanfictio..._True_Deception

Disclaimer: This is in no way pirating Mass Effect: Deception to the Internet hordes. Everything I write here is of my own making and not a word has been stolen from the Dietz novel. What I am simply doing here is taking Deception's plot (Which can be read from any good Wiki) and creating a Fan Fiction of an Alternate set of events which I like more than the established 'canon' novel. What I'm doing here is in no way illegal, this is simply just one of many AU Fan Fiction available on this web site. True Deception is in no way attempting to decrease the value of the official novel, I am simply attempting to readdress particular issues that received very negative reception from Mass Effect fans.

Haven't you heard? Writing awesome fan-fiction, getting assistance from the lead writer, then changing a few names and locations and selling it on Amazon is all the rage!:D

Its one thing if you don't religiously fact check Drew's novels- he wrote the damn games. Or at least wrote parts of them. He also wrote the first three novels, so he knows his own story and if he makes a mistake, it was an oversight.
<...>

And you check for oversights anyway. My research supervisor, professor who has been working in hydrodynamics for more than 20 years, was recently caught on using term "no-slip condition" instead of "slip condition" in article, so "double check everything after everyone" is like religious dogma to me.

The only case I can suggest for reason why editors let that slip is that initial manuscript was so atrocious that remaining lore damage was minor compared to initial state and was left out of desperation.

So, I've written up Deception's Codex entry for ME3:

Codex/Publications

Deception

Written
by human author William C. Dietz, the notorious subliterary-nonsensical
novel Deception focuses on several lives warped or destroyed by bad
writing, lack of research, and epic editorial fail. Following the
succesful springing of the Citadel trap in 1983 (or something) and the
accelerated rise of Level Three biotics in the galaxy, Kai Leng, AKA
"The Cabinet Intruder", ate David Anderson's (who as you know still
works for the Council despite quitting in the last novel) cereal. Level
Three biotic prodigy Gillian Grayson, an impossibly 18-year-old,
allegedly autistic girl, who as you know can launch a "reave" and
trigger a "charge" and make people @#$%ing explode with a "warp",
suffered for no readily apparent reason and to no actual purpose. Like
everyone else in the novel, she was ensnared in a web of stupidity
involving the Biotic Underground, a group of idiots trying to rule the
galaxy by holding Biotic Pride Parades on Omega to get street cred, and
extending to the Illusive Man, who basically just hangs out and smokes
and talks about "credibility" a lot. Also, there's some bullsh*t about
the Council. Several dozen lawsuits for intentional infliction of
emotional distress were filed in the wake of its
publication.

That's nice :)
