Nine pages overnight. Really enjoyed your post about the well-known T'Loak family, didy.

Ah, yes, the famous T'Loaks of Thessia. There are, like, hundreds of them.

Ah, yes, the famous T'Loak's of Thessia. There are, like, hundreds of them.

And they all have the SAME FAKE NAME.

What I like is that, in the midst of all that WTFery, the description of a relay is inaccurate. He forgets to mention the big "tuning fork" arms completely.

Details! Tedious, unsexy details!

Like not realizing you're relay jumping while having sex?

Cut Anderson some slack, he's been wanting to request permission to dock at her citadel for three books now.

Well, sometimes if the big mistakes are big enough, they cover the smaller mistakes.

Like not realizing you're relay jumping while having sex?

Would have to have beaten my sex with Tali to be so good you'd miss that.

At least the sex in Ascension was better written than some random unnecessary line.

That scene is a lot easier to read if you have this playing in your head

Lore inconsistencies are what has always scared me about writing fan fiction. It's nice to know that I can not only stop fretting about that, I can also get paid to publish said inconsistencies.

This. This, so much.

It makes my stomach turn that this man is going to receive royalties from this, when I can point to much better writing in fan fiction not endorsed by BioWare (and given this, it probably should be). That's what got me worked up about it in the beginning, and it still is now, especially because I write fan fiction myself.

I've had my share of things that BioWare did that I couldn't disagree with more (in terms of writing, that is), but this is on a whole other level.

It's just disheartening.

LLPrince, who did you contact, if you're at liberty to say? I'll probably write someone too, but I need to choose my words carefully. I'm just... too emotional about this right now. :P

The really awful part is that I don't think that whole relay-travel-as-sex-metaphor was unintentional.

Oh, I have no doubt that Dietz knew what the hell he was writing - you can't be that damn dense as a writer to not get the crappy metaphor that you yourself are writing about. :pinched:

I messaged a dev/mod. I don't see the benefit of the same dev/mod being messaged again, but we'll see.

I finally just cancelled my pre-order before it could ship, gonna wait a few weeks and maybe just buy it used off someone that way I'm not helping the book sell any more copies, but I will still have a fully formed and informed opinion enough to write a fair review.

I kinda missed it while browsing this topic, but didn't someone say there's talk going around that while BioWare aren't openly disavowing Deception, they are letting us decide whether it's canon or not, essentially telling us "yeah we know it's pants but don't tell EA we said that."?

Where did you see that? I don't recall that at all.

I can't exactly remember. I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere in the first ten pages. I'll give another read to see if I can pick it up again.

Someone (was it you, Prince?) just presented an idea that while Bioware couldn't openly state their opinions of the book due to obvious reasons, the fact that they're allowing this thread to remain open is passive way of agreeing. Or something.
It was just put forward as an alternative to try and soothe our anger, haha.

Challenge accepted, LPPrince. There are my first ten cannon mistakes in Deception. Everyone can continue, just please keep it on purely ME mistakes, things like cornflakes are only Dietz's stupidities, use same numbering and formal language in case, we someday send it to BW as proof of Dietz's incompetence, and donť repeating them. We will see, how incorrect this I'm-proud-on-it book is. Image IPB

Cannon mistakes in ME: Deception

  • Gillian's autism - now she, by her own words, grew up from it, which is impossible
  • Quarian's names - titling kvarian Fothar vas Maynar (and others) like Maynar means, you adressed them by name of their ship, not by their own name.
  • Gas suckers - quarians breathing air, their masks only looks like gas mask, their function is filtration of air
  • Claiming that Hendel never visit Omega before - Hendel was on Omega in Ascension whole three chapters
  • Hendel can't know that Anderson and Kahlee are together and on the Citadel - they got together after Hendel leaving with quarians and Kahlee had no contact with them (dialog between her and Grayson in Retribution and fact, that Gillian don't know about father's death)
  • Friendship of Gillian and Nick - there was only one and last contact between them in Ascension. Nick overthrow her milk and she went mad and nearly kill him
  • Gillian knowing about her adoption - nothing suggest this in Ascension, in fact Grayson had strict order from TIM pretending, he is her real father
  • Gillian claiming that child in Academy tormented her  -  nothing suggesting that, in fact they only ignoring her, incident with Nick was unique
  • Tantalus drive core on batarian ship - Tantalus core was high secret experiental drive core using only on Normandy, batarians can't have it
  • Aria T'Loak's biotic - Aria is very strong biotic, but in Deception she need her bodyguards to put barrier on her

11. The Citadel is described being star shaped - Citadel is actually like a hollow cylinder.

12. There is Batarian embassy in the Citedel - Batarians closed their embassy in after the Citadel Council sided with humans regarding border dispute.

13. Some characters visit Chora's Den - Chora's Den was closed after events of ME1.

14. Citadel surrounded by stars - Citadel is in the middle of nebula with only one star, Widow, visible.

15. Krogan dies when Kai Leng severes stabs knife in his neck and severes spine - Krogan biology doesn't work that way.

16. Biotics are told to have different levels in their Biotic abilities - There is no such thing, there are only different types of implants.

17. Hendel Mitra is described as heterosexual - Hendel is homosexual.

18. Deception claims Asari found The Citadel first and learned to use mass effect technology after that - How did they got in the Citadel at the first without using mass effect?

19. Deception tells that The Citadel is a Reaper trap that Reapers used successufully during the events of ME1 - That never happended due Prothean scientists reprogamming the Keepers and Shepard foiling Sovereigns plan to manuallu override Citadel relay function.

(AAAAARGH!)

20. Asari are told to be asexual - In ME1 Liara describes Asari as mono-gender, all female species.

Wasn't me, but I did respond to that idea earlier, I believe.

My plan was to let Bioware know that the novel must be disavowed from the lore, so I left a copy of the PM I sent to a BioDev in case anyone wanted to send it as well.

Honestly, just get the word out. This novel has too many holes in it to fit in the lore. Hell, it DOESN'T fit into the lore.

But we need to hear Bioware say that.

Ezio T'Soni della Consort stepped briskly past the French Quarter of Renaissance Thessia, careful to avoid alerting the Persian batarians disguised as limousine chauffers. He knew he had to be quick - rollerblading turian patrols were keeping a constant vigil over the area, relaying all sightings of Level 3 assassins to Alliance Command in Cleveland.

"For the slaughter of the noble house Wrex on the krogan homeworld of Omega, you will know suffering," Ezio muttered loudly as he passed a salarian peace protest against the six-year stalemate of the War on Reapers. As the Reapers had remained largely unnoticed by the galactic community, very little in the way of progress had been made against them. But that hadn't stopped the Council from openly discussing their existence.

Aria T'Loak, head of the successful banking family, was too busy making love to Hendel Mitra to notice Ezio beheading her guards via slicing their ankles open. When she finally blew an asari air kiss toward Kai Leng, who had been dutifully urinating in his litter box (formerly a cereal box, created by the well-respected cereal company known as Chef Boyardee) it was almost too late.

"Kill him!" Aria barked in her deep guttural style. Asari were prone to heavy bass-like voices, especially when both their parents had been hanar.

But Kai Leng, dressed in his favorite volus clown suit, had chosen to play by his rules, not T'Loak's. Backflipping off of the trampoline - a staple of modern living in the flourishing art community of Thessia - he landed on the corpse of an elcor, flung hidden strings from his cuffs to the beast's various limbs and proceeded to perform Francis Ford Coppola's famed "Elcor Romeo and Juliet" to the best of his ability.

Unfortunately, this involved both lovers dying at the end, so when he noticed his beloved elcor was slain, he killed himself. For most, the instinct known as survivalism would have prevented him from going through with the action. But Kai Leng didn't care. He was a badass.

Ezio cleared his throat. "My name is Ezio T'Soni della Consort. You killed my mother. Prepare to die."

"Wait!" T'Loak demanded, shoving the good-for-nothing Hendel (heterosexual, as are all soldiers) off of her bed as he attempted to convince her to ignore the intruder and go for round two. He had been too busy fondling to notice Ezio's deadly twin omni-gels. "Before you kill me, tell me one thing. Who killed my daughter?"

Ezio gestured absentmindedly toward the corpse of Kai Leng.

T'Loak shrugged. "Hm. Well, I suppose that settles that, then. I would use my biotics against you but alas, I'm a simple banker. Have you any need for investment dividends?"

Just then, Hendel charged up his laser at speeds in excess of Warp 7. Focusing his entire mind on his Light Level 3 Cerberus Armor - a gift from The Illusive Man for successfully completing his last mission in the name of humanity's future - he fired a blast of pure ice which encapsulated Ezio, who then exploded into hundreds of tiny shards.

"Why didn't you do that in the first place?" Aria's best Johnny Cash impression echoed through the walls of her furnished Victorian cottage.

But there would be no reply. All biotics ran the low but extreme risk of combusting into flames whenever they loosed their powers on the world. For there was ever the risk that their quintessence would give way to paradox, as per the quarian Encyclopedia Tabletoptica.

As her luxurious home caught wind of flame and began to collapse, Aria made a mad dash to save herself. She did a handstand on her trampoline, then triple front-flipped to safety. Leaving the ruins of her empire, she vowed to return and retake it one day.
