Challenge accepted, LPPrince. There are my first ten cannon mistakes in Deception. Everyone can continue, just please keep it on purely ME mistakes, things like cornflakes are only Dietz's stupidities, use same numbering and formal language in case, we someday send it to BW as proof of Dietz's incompetence, and donť repeating them. We will see, how incorrect this I'm-proud-on-it book is.


Cannon mistakes in ME: Deception

• Gillian's autism - now she, by her own words, grew up from it, which is impossible
• Quarian's names - titling kvarian Fothar vas Maynar (and others) like Maynar means, you adressed them by name of their ship, not by their own name.
• Gas suckers - quarians breathing air, their masks only looks like gas mask, their function is filtration of air
• Claiming that Hendel never visit Omega before - Hendel was on Omega in Ascension whole three chapters
• Hendel can't know that Anderson and Kahlee are together and on the Citadel - they got together after Hendel leaving with quarians and Kahlee had no contact with them (dialog between her and Grayson in Retribution and fact, that Gillian don't know about father's death)
• Friendship of Gillian and Nick - there was only one and last contact between them in Ascension. Nick overthrow her milk and she went mad and nearly kill him
• Gillian knowing about her adoption - nothing suggest this in Ascension, in fact Grayson had strict order from TIM pretending, he is her real father
• Gillian claiming that child in Academy tormented her  -  nothing suggesting that, in fact they only ignoring her, incident with Nick was unique
• Tantalus drive core on batarian ship - Tantalus core was high secret experiental drive core using only on Normandy, batarians can't have it
• Aria T'Loak's biotic - Aria is very strong biotic, but in Deception she need her bodyguards to put barrier on her

11. The Citadel is described being star shaped - Citadel is actually like a hollow cylinder.

12. There is Batarian embassy in the Citedel - Batarians closed their embassy in after the Citadel Council sided with humans regarding border dispute.

13. Some characters visit Chora's Den - Chora's Den was closed after events of ME1.

14. Citadel surrounded by stars - Citadel is in the middle of nebula with only one star, Widow, visible.

15. Krogan dies when Kai Leng severes stabs knife in his neck and severes spine - Krogan biology doesn't work that way.

16. Biotics are told to have different levels in their Biotic abilities - There is no such thing, there are only different types of implants.

17. Hendel Mitra is described as heterosexual - Hendel is homosexual.

18. Deception claims Asari found The Citadel first and learned to use mass effect technology after that - How did they got in the Citadel at the first without using mass effect?

19. Deception tells that The Citadel is a Reaper trap that Reapers used successufully during the events of ME1
- That never happended due Prothean scientists reprogamming the Keepers
and Shepard foiling Sovereigns plan to manuallu override Citadel relay
function.

21. Asari are told to be asexual - In ME1 Liara describes Asari as mono-gender, all female species.

22. Quarian's names, continued - none of the quarians named in Deception have a clan-name (examples: Tali'Zorah, Han'Gerrel, Daro'Xen, Shala'Raan, etc.

23. Asari Council member saying "My God" - Asari don't believe in any form of male God, their religion is a monotheistic one based on the Goddess Athame.

24. Kai Leng visits an auction house on the Batarian homeworld Kar'Shan - the Batarian homeworld is closed off to outside races, especially humans.

25. Batarian pirates raid slaves from the Turian homeworld of Pavalen - yeah, a bunch of no-name pirates managed to raid supplies and slaves from the homeworld of one of the strongest and most militaristic of races in the Mass Effect universe.

26. Public is allowed in the Citadel Council chamber - In ME1 only very few people have a privilegde to meet them.

27. Characters Gillian and Nick are 18 years old in Deception - These characters were 12 - 13 years old in previous novels set 2 years before Deception

28. Hand Weapons that fire at "relativistic speeds" - for those who doesn't know it the term relativistic speed means close or apprising the speed of light, the term is usually used about speed higher than 80% of C - considering that a sand corn fired of those speeds will have the impact of 90 kg TNT and also that a main gun on a Everest class dreadnought only fires at 1.3% of C i would say that relativistic speeds might be a bit high.

29. TIM's hideout -  in Retribution is written, that TIM is hidding on space station, which changing location after every visitor including Leng. Now TIM is on the planet and staying there after Leng's visit.

30. Gillian's visit in Afterlife - Afterlife is most popular bar on Omega and people waiting hours to get in (Retribution). Now Gillian enter it immediately and bouncer don't stop her.

[*]34.  Kai Leng's Equipment is Inadequet - In Retribution, Kai Leng used a six man commando team to take down a non-biotic Paul Grayson, and later used a state of the art survailence suite to track when Aria exited her secret entrance, which would alert him so that he could use the proper facilities when he needed to.  Now he goes alone to take on powerful biotic Gillian and uses a sniper rifle to survey the main entrance of Afterlife, and is forced to pee in a vase so as not to miss anything.

[*]35.  Aria Learns that Cerberus killed her daughter, but continues working for them in Invasion - The reason Cerberus is able to work a deal with Aria in Retribution is because they promise revenge on her daughter's killer.  In Invasion, which takes place after Deception, Aria continues to work with Cerberus and even allows them access to the Omega 4 Relay.  But before that happens, she discovers that Kai Leng was the one who killed her daughter, and vows never to work with Cerberus again.

Okay so the amps go to the interface ports and implants are spread throughout the nervous system. Thanks for the info!

How about this:
XX. Gillian is having a surgery to have her implants replaced by mixed set of different manufacturers parts in back yard clinic. Operation takes couple of hours(?) - In ME canon operation to replace biotic implants is considered to be very dangerous and most biotics decide not to replace their implants but rather suffer from even cripling side effects.
Biotic implants work with brain and nervous system and such operation would take much longer and it would also take a long time to recover from operation.

I would still wait if Didy is going to say jay or nay, he is the best with the lore and remembers things from games better than most of us.

I must say I also try to keep this funny and meaningful and must fight my urge to add William C. Dietz on error list with description like "Self explanatory for those who read the Deception". So I'm kinda biased.

I don't mean to brag or anything....but I probably know just as much as Didy...or if the conventions are indication.... more than the lion-share of the fan base who I was screaming at in anger for totaly not knowing the answers to Biowares kindergarden level trivia questions on Pulse when they were giving stuff away.

So shoot! Should this be in the error list or no and why or why not?

No one's blaming Dietz. At least, not completely. As stated before, he was a merc writer hired to write this novel. He had no emotion for the characters, no stake in them whatsoever, and so didn't have the same drive that Drew Karpyshyn would've had.

Its understandable. The blame isn't just his, but it falls on whoever allowed this novel to be released in its current state.

Its atrocious, contradicts itself, is riddled with inconsistencies, is poorly written, and STILL is going to be sold.

While it being sold is likely never going to change, its place in canonity should be invalidated.

Hence the PM's to send the message higher up the Bioware food chain that the novel's place in the lore needs to be disavowed.

I bought it on Wednesday from a major retailer. In Scandinavia. I learned only yesterday the official release day was 31st. I've heard Amazon and some online retailers starting to ship the pre-orders early, but I walked into the book store and there it was, on the shelf.

Honestly, I have no idea what happened with the release, but my guess is somebody screwed up badly.

The problem with this, much like Hendel's sudden straitening, is that it is not mentioned at all.  Dietz doesn't even seem to realize that these characters ever where autisitic or gay, and writes them as if they never were that way to begin with.  I imagine that Gillian made great improvements over her years in the Flotilla (the suits gaves her comfort, she wasn't being pumped full of drugs, and she finally had a real father figure in Hendel) but Dietz never mentions any of that, and in fact has her exclaim how her years on the Flottila were "like a prison" to her and that, now she is out on Omega, the most crowded and overwhelming places in the galaxy, she is finally "free"

I don't actually know if she got the mixed set in the end... They were just talking about it casually, and at the same time they were talking about amps as well, and the whole thing was just terribly confusing, and they're at the clinic, and the whole thing goes down and Gillian is like "this takes foreveeer!" and zones out and the next moment the doctors's like "that's it, you're done!"

EDIT No, I went back to read the passage properly and behold, in the page 95:

What followed was a grueling process during which the old implants were removed and new ones were installed.

So yes, she got herself new implants.

More than likely they are implanted somewhere near the pons, which is quite invasive surgery and very, very risky, even by neurosurgical standards.  Amps are placed on ganglia more than likely.

I any case though, this novel is just a long piece of malarkey.

Most modern human biotics use the Alliance's L3 implant, which are not particularly powerful but are safe to use. However, some older biotics are stuck with L2 implants, which allow abilities to spike higher—Kaidan Alenko's abilities are reportedly comparable to an asari's—but at a significant cost. L2 implants are notorious for causing severe medical complications such as insanity, mental disability, and crippling pain. It is possible to "upgrade" from an L2 to an L3 implant, but the procedure is rarely performed because it carries a very high risk of brain damage. Many L2s feel the Alliance has not provided them with sufficient medical or financial support and want reparations for their suffering. In some cases, extreme physical or psychological stress can cause even normally stable L2s to experience similar health problems.


All biotics seeking to wield their abilities on a usable level are fitted with an electronic brain implant during puberty. Once the implant is installed, it can only be replaced or altered through extremely dangerous brain surgery, so most individuals keep the same implant their entire lives. Biotics are classed according to their implant model and the strength of their ability:
L1 - These biotics can manipulate small objects, but their abilities are not strong enough to be offensively viable, because the L1s were implanted after puberty.
L2 - The L2 implants were first implemented in 2167. The results vary wildly - some L2s are hardly stronger than an L1, others are strong but unstable, while a few are powerful and stable enough for combat, though they usually suffer some discomfort from their implants. 5. Hendel can't know that Anderson and Kahlee are together and on the Citadel - they got together after Hendel leaving with quarians and Kahlee had no contact with them (dialog between her and Grayson in Retribution and fact, that Gillian don't know about father's death).

6. Friendship of Gillian and Nick - there was only one and last contact between them in Ascension. Nick overthrow her milk and she went mad and nearly kill him.

7. Gillian knowing about her adoption - nothing suggest this in Ascension, in fact Grayson had strict order from TIM pretending, he is her real father.

8. Gillian claiming that child in Academy tormented her  -  nothing suggesting that, in fact they only ignoring her, incident with Nick was unique.

9. Tantalus drive core on batarian ship - Tantalus core was high secret experiental drive core using only on Normandy, batarians can't have it.

23. Asari Council member saying "My God" - Asari don't believe in any form of male God, their religion is a monotheistic one based on the Goddess Athame.

24. Kai Leng visits an auction house on the Batarian homeworld Kar'Shan - the Batarian homeworld is closed off to outside races, especially humans.

25. Batarian pirates raid slaves from the Turian homeworld of Pavalen - yeah, a bunch of no-name pirates managed to raid supplies and slaves from the homeworld of one of the strongest and most militaristic of races in the Mass Effect universe.

26. Public is allowed in the Citadel Council chamber - In ME1 only very few people have a privilegde to meet them.

27. Characters Gillian and Nick are 18 years old in Deception - These characters were 12 - 13 years old in previous novels set 2 years before Deception

28. Hand Weapons that fire at "relativistic speeds" - for those who doesn't know it the term relativistic speed means close or apprising the speed of light, the term is usually used about speed higher than 80% of C - considering that a sand corn fired of those speeds will have the impact of 90 kg TNT and also that a main gun on a Everest class dreadnought only fires at 1.3% of C i would say that relativistic speeds might be a bit high.

29. TIM's hideout -  in Retribution is written, that TIM is hidding on space station, which changing location after every visitor including Leng. Now TIM is on the planet and staying there after Leng's visit.

30. Gillian's visit in Afterlife - Afterlife is most popular bar on Omega and people waiting hours to get in (Retribution). Now Gillian enter it immediately and bouncer don't stop her.

31. Quarian's clothing - Quarians wear enviromentally-sealed 'enviro-suits' to protect their weakened immune systems... they do not wear "a motley collection of clothing, held together by a variety of straps and metal fasteners".

32. No Kinetic Barriers - In the ME games, as well as previous books, all hardsuits come with Kinetic Barriers (aka shields) that must be broken before the user can be killed by ranged weaponry. In Deception, there is only mention of weapons "chewing through armor" or poor references to Biotic Barriers on characters wearing hardsuits ala Nick.

33. In Retribution, Aria uses a secret backdoor to get in and out of Afterlife without her patrons knowing, and also has a series of backrooms for private conversations. Now she drives up to the front entrance in a limo, passing by several people who would want to kill her, and takes a call from the Illusive Man in her main lounge.

34. Kai Leng's Equipment is Inadequate - In Retribution, Kai Leng used a six man commando team to take down a non-biotic Paul Grayson, and later used a state of the art survailence suite to track when Aria exited her secret entrance, which would alert him so that he could use the proper facilities when he needed to.  Now he goes alone to take on powerful biotic Gillian and uses a sniper rifle to survey the main entrance of Afterlife, and is forced to pee in a vase so as not to miss anything.

35. Aria Learns that Cerberus killed her daughter, but continues working for them in Invasion - The reason Cerberus is able to work a deal with Aria in Retribution is because they promise revenge on her daughter's killer.  In Invasion, which takes place after Deception, Aria continues to work with Cerberus and even allows them access to the Omega 4 Relay.  But before that happens, she discovers that Kai Leng was the one who killed her daughter, and vows never to work with Cerberus again.

Another huge mistake. This is part of Shella's testimony about  Liselle's murder.

"Grayson got away, but someone put a tranq dart into T'Loak's daughter, and she was laying there. Manning slit her throat." [

But Grayson was captured too, he escaped later from Cerberus space station.

Honestly though, the wikia shouldn't be used for fact checking. Its good for cursory knowledge, but when it comes to actually WORKING on a piece of the lore, you should have some other source for your information, a more direct primary source.

Somebody should tweet him and see if he did have something like this at his disposal. If not the blame doesn't really lie on Dietz's shoulders. They should have given him the right building blocks to write the book.

Someone emailed him and Dietz replied that he usually play all the games and read all previous novels in series. He also tells that two people at BioWare checked his work "line-by-line".
In the end he says that he is proud of Deception.

They should fire those "2 fact checkers at Bioware", unless Dietz was lying...

IIRC Hudson and Walters are mentioned in the first pages of Deception.

If it seriously was Mac and Casey, im at a loss of words.... Gillian 18 years old, Aria working with Cerberus after knowing Kai Leng murdered her daughter... This is just inexcusable...
