Hello all,
I just got both Baldur's gate 1 and 2.  I'd like to get started but can't decide on a class.  I'm still learning that there's no such thing as mana in this game and things like Thac0 so please bear with me.  I need your recommendation for a class for me so I can begin to learn right away and hopefully not painful enough as to turn me away from the game.

I want to play a class that can fill multiple roles so I've narrowed the list down to the following as well as what I can gather about them from the manual (please correct me if any of these are wrong):
- Bard (some melee, some magic,  pickpocket, bardsong)
- Cleric(better melee, heal, buff, cc and plate armor!)
- Cleric/Mage (some melee, the best magic of these options?, slower to level)
- Druid (some melee, armor, shapeshifting, heal buff, and cc but apparently only outside?)

Which of these classes do you think is better suited for someone new to this game?  As I said, I really like being versatile.  I don't have a need to be ridiculously overpowered long as I'm useful to the party... like a utility knife or something.  Your opinion and recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Irv.

Remember that the other party members are essentially "yours" as well. They too will fit your needs so you don't necessary need to pick a character that experiences everything. I would recommend a Fighter class with 18s in STR, DEX, and CON. This will give you a good leg up as you'll be able to have good armor class, and good thaco to boot. Get two pips in bows or missile weapons because you'll be using those weapons quite often. Good luck!

I'd go with Cleric out of those four because it is strong class and easy to learn.

Bard is an advanced class. Yes, it's got some serious melee, but only if you know what you are doing and if you are protecting your HP properly. As for the others, try adding some warrior to the mix and you should be okay to go:
Ranger/Cleric
Fighter/Cleric/Mage (though the leveling will seriously be SLOW)
Fighter/Druid

Of course, the real jack of all trades would be the Fighter/Thief/Mage, which is sort of like the bard, only with the ability to put on armor if you feel your magic is not helping you and a better melee (also, thief skills).

Unless you have a lot of experience in other games playing the 4 types of PCs you mentioned, I would keep it simple on a first run through and go with Cleric - a mix of magic and some muscle - or Druid - similar magic and a little weaker muscle. But as Shadow_L said, a simple Fighter would probably be the easiest and safest of all.

For the first time playing, take a melee oriented class.
Paladin is pretty nice or the various Fighter (Ranger) Multiclasses (F/Mage, Ranger/Cleric, F/Druid).
As Shadow_Leech mentioned, get Str, Dex and Con to 18 and you'll have a nice start.

You can test out finer tactics with the various NPCs you will assemble, who will cover the whole spectrum of possible classes, anyway.

I'd go with a Cleric of the four you mentioned. It'll allow for descent melee, second only to fighter types and will let you use spells. As you indicate, it allows you to use any armor so your PC will be well protected against enemy melee. In this case you'd want at least one 'fighter type' that can melee 'close-in' - most folks use the term 'tank.'

Another idea is to go with a Paladin or Paladin Sub-class - which is kinda the best of both worlds between Cleric and Fighter and gives you some spell use later ~ 9th level or so.

Yes, but make sure you don't install it in the default program files location.
