I should probably come clean, I used to pirate games and only recently did I become a proud convert. Ideally, I would want to run my game without having to have a disc inserted (obviously that's how it has always been for me). I just bought DA: Ultimate, and being new to this stuff, I was surprised to find out that I'd have to keep disc inserted for each and every time I'd play DA.
1. Should this really be so, or I did accidentally choose an undesirable installation type? Again, I prefer to shelf my CDs and not have them placed in my drive all the time.
2. Since I bought the game, I thought maybe I am already entitled to use a No-CD Crack without the fear of getting banned or something. Recommendable?
3. Any other workaround should (2) be not advisable? Virtual mounting maybe?

Thanks in advance. I'm new here also, by the way - I hope this is the right place to post.

I'm not sure, but I think a download version is/was available... but you already have your copy so that doesn't solve your issue.

These days, it would probably be more appropriate to purchase a downloadable version of a game if you aren't interested in disc checks. Some games bought at retail, like Civ5 or Skyrim, use Steamworks so don't require the disc because they require Steam instead. It's unfortunate that you bought the game without knowing that it'll require a disc check (I usually just assume it is so).

There used to be a time when you can register your game with EA's download service and could get the game via them, and that would get rid of the need of a disc check. However, I'm unaware if Origin (EA's new service) allows for this. It may be something you can check out, if someone else doesn't pop on and help out with some tips.

As an aside, any discussion of methods of bypassing copy protection, even if you own the game, is not allowed on the forums. You'll understand, I'm sure, the reasons for that.

Have you patched your game to its latest version (1.05)? I've bought the Ultimate edition a year ago, and haven't been bothered by disc checks once I've patched and registered my way through.

I appreciate the responses. I'll check out the downloadable versions as soon as I can, then. Not for ME3 and DA2 though, call me a nerd but those games are just too epic not to have a boxed disc copy. Bioware - they make the best games! And regarding the bypassing copy protection - of course, of course, why didn't I think of that earlier.

@hunter: That's a relief. I'll see to it then that my game's fully patched. Thanks!
EDIT: Well that was unexpected - that a game as grand as this doesn't come with auto patch feature. But hey, I don't mind manual patching. Dragon Age Origins 1.05 is all that  I need? I won't have to go through each and every patch they released? Oops, luckily my DAOrigins.exe is already 1.04, so I assume 1.05 is the only thing I'd have to download.
EDIT 2: Sadly, after having 1.05, disc is still needed to play the game. Thanks anyway

inserting the disc to play is just the norm for us oldies who've been playing legally since the dawn of time (remembering when a 1gb hard disc was ridiculously huge, we said it could never be filled ....) and I still have no problem with it.

The auto patch thing is a bit odd though, Origins is later than most of my other games with auto update. Perhaps it's in there so that we can still play the game with certain glitches we like, for example: I see lots of bad things about patch 1.05 and won't be bothering to download it, for over a year Origins & Awakening has worked just fine on 1.04;
I got miffed when I couldn't play a gay romance with Alistair as I had with my original run through, seems the patches took that "glitch" out - it's ok, I accept it, don't want to mod it, I get that he's straight

now go get addicted, see how many run throughs you do, just to see what happens if you're a female noble dwarf, a female alienage elf, a female mage, a male rogue dwarf, a noble ........ and what if you do this here, ooh and next time I'll do that....

let me know if you want to join DA Anonymous!

Last time I checked(about a month ago), my Dragon Age: Origins + Awakening, Dragon Age 2, and Mass Effect 2 boxed copies were still registered and available for download on Origin. I registered them before the rebranding of the EADM to Origin though.

I would be shocked if you can't register it on Origin. Let us know how you get on.

:o Strongly disagree, but that's a whole other conversation for somewhere other than this forum, I guess. :o

First unistall your game, then go to either activate.ea.com or though origin. Register you code then REDOWNLOAD the game. You most redownload it or it will register as the disc copy.

Yup, Origin does allow for downloading copies you bought retail as long as they are registered. Mine shows up. Heck, I even registered my Steam copy of ME1 and its now available through Origin. So now I can get it digitally through Steam any time I want OR Origin. Same can be said for my D2D copy of Dragon Age II. Also now available through Origin. Only downside is that downloading the Ultimate Edition of DAO is nearly 27 gigs. Gadzooks.

Really?? You can do that? Download already purchased physical copies? That would come handy for a laptop. Though that means I can't install mods to the game, right? And 27gb?haha that would mean having to have a new internet plan.

Yep. With recent EA games, you can enter in your serial key that you got with your physical copy into origin and register it, Once its registered, you can download the game if it isn't already installed on the machine. Although be prepared to have a big internet data plan.

Also, if you have the game installed via origin, you don't need to put in the physical CD. It just means you will need to boot up Origin every time you want to play it
