I have been working on creating a Vampiric Illithid and have had some success, but could use a bit of help polishing off  this new creature.

I am using Ree's vampire ghoul for the body, but could just as easily use a ghoul/ghast body, and a mind flayers head.

I started off trying to merge the models in the appearance.2da.  I had the bodytype set to 1 and the body model and skeleton set as the Ree ghoul and the head and head skeleton as the mind flayer. There appears to be a skeleton conflict, there is no idel animation and the creature stands up-right with its arms slightly out palms forward (much like a medical diagram). The models themselves line up nicely and do look good.

I don't know if there is something I could do with the mdas to make this work, I know there are several retuextures and model merged creatures on the vault.

My second attempt has been a bit more successful, but it is definately a fall-back to the above and not my prefered method. I have created a visual effect of the mindflayer head and attached it to the ree ghoul. See below:

This looks good most of the time and if it is the best I will be happy with it, however there are some issues. First is the clipping the back and the left side of the head to clip as the two heads aren't always lined up perfect. The blueprint behaves wierd in the toolset. THe only way to select it is with the area content or by the click and drag box. I can not select the blueprint by just clicking on it.

So if there is any advice on how to make this an actual model let me know and I will give it a try.

Thanks, Shaughn

the problem is that both models use different skeletons and vertex weighting. you can't merge those without conflicts because head and body always have to share one bone setting to connect both parts. right now the engine doesn't know what to do.

to solve this you can either reskin the vampire's body to the mind flayer's skeleton (with the loss of the typical zombie animations) or the mind flayer's head to the zombie's skeleton (with the loss of animated tentacles). sadly neither way is optimal.

Thanks Semper, that is kind of what I expected.

Despite the issues I will likely continue with the VFX for now. This way I can have the feral ghoul animations with the tentacled face animation.
