The problem with SOPA
wasn't that it was a bad idea, it was that it was too vaguely worded and
left gaping holes for abuse of the restrictions. The protests weren't
that it was thrown out entirely--we just want something that clarified
more specific situations. I'm all for supporting a bill that protects
artist's rights, but not one that can crack down on anyone who dares to
utter a name they don't hold the copyright to.

What Dasque said.

Although, Is SOPA even applicable to this particular case? I'm no expert, but I thought SOPA dealt with piracy, not plagiarism. As far as I know, the person in question here did not upload illegal copies of Dragon Age for distribution. She's been accused of plagiarizing portions of her own work from the Dragon Age universe. This seems like it would be a case of copyright infringement, which there are already laws in place for.

It's very early in the morning, so please - feel free to let me know if my brain is not functioning properly.

If it has such quality writing as our lovely Michelle Franklin, I'll buy as many books as I can!

You know...when she wrote the fan fic and a rave thread was started here, I made just one comment. I said the consummation scene personally scarred me emotionally (specifically because the internal bleeding excites Sten), but to each their own.  I didn't make any effort to criticize, mock, demean, or in any way call attention to her novel. Writing is far too personal a pleasure as is reading.

Even my initial review of her "original book" was done in quietness. That again was based on very specific criticisms- the fact that I thought it was really close to the fan fiction, and that her overuse of metaphors was something I didn't like. I sent a copy of the fan fic to her publisher, but didn't come here to publicize it.

It was only when a fan said in response to my review, that the author had claimed she had never heard of Dragon Age that I brought this to more public attention. Thus, it is really ...ironic that she thinks that after 5 months of posting that review, and only on having that review contested by a claim that I believe to be categorically false (never heard of DA:O) that she thinks I unleashed the troll within.

Imported Beer's timeless classic The Troll Within. Now in paperback and coming soon in two ply!

All she had to do is NOT SELL these books, and I don't think anyone would have a problem.  She's attempting to make a profit off of other people's intellectual property -- which is more than names of characters and places.

Ideas do have worth.  Artists, writers, and musicians have the right to protect their creativity, and make money off of it without having their hard work stolen.

The money is one thing, but it's not even just that.  It's the principle of the thing, the ingratitude and sheer gall it takes to rip off someone else's world and characters and then brag about your derivative story being totally original and a revelation of modern fantasy storytelling- which, with prose as purple and tortured as hers, is high irony.  The game writers themselves will talk about their inspiration and influences.  That's what you do when you have integrity and confidence in your own work.  If I didn't know it, I'd say this was all a parody, or a demonstration of the worst fanfiction can produce.

SOPA has indeed nothing to do with it. I'm surprised it came up, rather simple-minded of the proponents.

But as we're at it, I'd like to add, even if SOPA and ACTA's sole purpose would be to eliminate the Pirate Bay and similar sites (which we all know are full of piracy), then it would also be bad. Swizerland had it right with their research and whatnot.

edit: before anyone gets on that horse, I'll state that I myself own legally all games I like. Mass Effect 1 & 2, Dragon Age: Origins UE included... (though I must mention, I don't like the Mass Effect series much)

Alright, folks, I think we're done here. Dog piling isn't really something we support on these forums, and that seems to be what the thread has become.

So I'm locking.
