I'm sorry, but I would NOT want "murderous hands" down there, even if I am sexually attracted to the man.

Holy crapasaorus...This is so laughably bad...
I do not know whether or not to sigh in disappointment with humanity, buy the book before it gets taken down due to plagarism so I can laugh even more, or just forget about it.

Just ask imported_beer. She has the pdf of the fanfiction. And the "Original" work on her kindle (I guess?). So maybe she sends it to you, but I'm not sure about the copyright issue (what a laugh).

And well... me being a woman and all, I advice those in precariousness what does or does not fit: Believe in yourself and you can accomodate to everything! You just have to believe! Or be appropriately prepared. Some lube and staring should do.

Ooh, that'd be nice. But I don't want to be a bother. Can I get the fanfiction anywhere else on the Internet? Or at least the funniest parts?

Bioware has a legal department to advice them. She has a publisher to back her up if there is legal trouble (to whom I sent a copy of the PDF and who never responded).

I am a geeky Dr. Nobody who doesn't even *know* a lawyer. Since this book has no author, I can talk about it, but I am not sure about the legal implications of sending the PDF. I *know* sending the real book out will be illegal.

I would however say- PLEASE don't buy the book just to laugh at it. Even I didn't *buy* it. She will still make money and at the expense of what I believe to be plagiarism. I will post as many passages from the Book of Unknown Origins as you want. It will be close to the same thing anyway.

I... this...
This makes me really mad. The plagiarism is so obvious.
And apparently the writing is horrific, too.

Plagiarism. Makes me want to laugh, but be sad at the same time. The so very obvious, barely changed names, places, and personality of the story are all there. And they have /never/ heard of DAO. My backside! Well. I don't have much more to say, besides maybe they should get their own, /original/ ideas?

The only worry that I have is that people will now go and buy the book to sate their curiosity, thus giving her more money for something that is obviously plagiarized...

That can work.
Is there any fake Zev or Oghren? Or any mention of Andraste?

As far as I know she was at least clever enough to erase what she could erase of the fanfiction. Not that something can get erased of the internet... One just has to look in the right places...

The book on kindle is one thing, but what you are currently posting are abstracts of the Fanfiction (of unknwon origin), right? I do wonder if posting old fanfictions (of unknown origin) is forbidding. If the author has a problem, maybe she... I mean they can still say she they don't want you to post that. If they dare.

She deleted her BSN account, but it's very, very easy to find conclusive proof of the plagiarism, even without Mr. Gaider's comments on the matter.

I am not a lawyer, but I happen to know that attorneys LOVE intellectual property infringement.  Like Sten loves cookies.

Hmm. I'm not comfortable mocking her actual writing, to be honest. There are good and bad fanfic writers out there, but for most of us it's a hobby. We do it because we enjoy it, not because we aspire to be the next Tolkien. Bashing this author for her writing demeans all fanfic writers with similar styles or plot choices, and I'd rather not. I'll never read that sort of thing because it's not what I'm into, but the writer can do whatever she loves.

Neither do I care that she's making money. There is a booming trade in commissioned art based on, for instance, My Character + My Character's LI, and it's been going for ages. Yes, money is made off Dragon Age characters, although the artists do put disclaimers on their work that eg. Sten is copyright Bioware. So my way of thinking is that so long as the fanfic writer credits Bioware and doesn't copy/paste swathes of text from the game then it's as original as a fanartist's work and just as worthy of commissions. The law probably sees it differently, but I don't care. :P

So we get to the actual issue, which is the author's failure to credit Bioware, and indeed her apparent claims that she's never even heard of Dragon Age. TBH I'd like to see something from the author herself instead of the word of a random reviewer, but considering she's pulled every single instance of The Sten and the Warden and Ask the Sten from BSN, removed herself from the forum, and removed them all from her own DeviantArt page I think it's safe to say she was trying to cover her tracks.

A pity you can still find the author mentioned by name here on BSN, and cached versions of The Sten and the Warden thanks to Google, and comments by the author on DeviantArt pictures like this one where the author, MeibatsuRen, comments about approaching David Gaider for help with The Sten and the Warden, and EA for publication.

I like this quote in particular:

I asked if he or any other writer wanted to collab on the second book but they aren't allowed to take part in anything that EA doesn't approve of. There's sex in the book, alas, no approval. So, I'll just have to keep putting the material out for free :)

One presumes sex is allowed in Bioware books, considering Maric and his elven harem, but not explicit porn.

Anyway, I'd rather discredit the lies than the writing. :)

Edit: But if you want to read some of her stuff without paying for it, there's plenty on her DevArt page. You can even leave comments without having to buy something from Amazon.

There is absolutely no Zevran. The sinewy blonde guy who hits on every woman is just some random guy from a neighboring country.

COINCIDENCE!

And also, the passages I am quoting are from the Authorless Book named Sten and the Warden. Quoting from the Kindle book would be totally illegal and this book has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with that book.

So...I was considering typing out the consummation scene. Because I think I had an internal haemorrhage too while reading it. Except mine was in my brain. But I worry that the moderators may object to the er...lewdness.

I have in my possession a review copy of this...thing. The dressed-up novel, not Sten and The Warden (which my trainwreck sense possesses me to read somehow). I'm a huge fan of Qunmance myself--but this, this, this vashedan was laughably bad.

No Zev, no Oghren, no party or dragon. Just Alistair and Cailan(?) and Farmer!Pa Cousland.

And there is this article where she admits the authorship of The Sten and the Warden: http://narrativedesi...helle-franklin/

I especially love that she says it is NOT Austen-like romance.

Why did you erase the link?

The article says she is a Dr.? In what? Does someone know?

I know she deserves it, but I don't want to be involved with her getting a whole amount of tweets.
Then again, it's on her author page...
http://twitter.com/MrsDenAsaan

Her other books have covers that make this ripoff even more obvious.
