I posted a negative review and also alerted Amazon to this shameless plagiarist.

I know she deserves it, but I don't want to be involved with her getting a whole amount of tweets.
Then again, it's on her author page...

I didn't mean to tweet her. Just wanted to read it, but I understand your reasoning. If you want you can erase it again. ;)

Curious, Miss Beer, did you see her Tweets?

No, I didn't.

Shadow of Light Dragon wrote...

Hmm. I'm not comfortable mocking her actual writing, to be honest.

I can respect that opinion, but to be fair I have always maintained that the minute you write something and put yourself out there, you are going to have people who enjoy your writing and those who don't. I have not mocked her writing as much as mocked the fact that someone could go into such detail his character, his...interactions and even his body parts as Sten and then allegedly claim she has never even heard of the series in which he appears.

As for those who think her writing is bad, that is as valid an opinion as those who love her writing. She has many fans, too. I suppose they balance each other out?

So much about Michelle Franklin seems odd. In the interview she is referred to as "Dr. Michelle Franklin, Esquire." This may be playing off of what she said in the interview, but Esquire is a title generally reserved for pretentious attorneys and Dr. implies she has a doctorate of something. In real life most people with doctorates rarely use the title as the confusion with medical doctors results in people whining about wait times and how expensive or unavailable their medicine is. As I said, it may be that was just the interviewer being playful.

She also claims to be a game designer. Her LinkedIn profile certainly claims as much. She also seems to have harboured hopes of working for Bioware.

All of which begs the question as to why she would try to sell these books. She has to know she's infringing and that what she is about is illegal.

Ah yes this has poped up in the forms before and I'm suprised that:

A) shes managed to get away with such blatant copying
and
B) BioWare/EA's lawers arn't killing themselves with glee over this and haven't already started to sue the pants off her!

But as I meantioned in anther thread, Franklin can hardly deny not knowing about the game when shes stated in a interview that shes played it a bunch of times, and how much she liked her work on the fanfic (haha) Whilst I'm fairly interested to see how much of a copy this book is, I don't want to give her money that should by all accounts go to BioWare....

It is odd, I would have thought it would have been the quickest way to ensure that she never works within the industry, espically not for BioWare.

Critique is different to outright mockery IMO. The first is honest, the second is malicious.

Yes, once your stuff is printed/posted it's open season. That doesn't mean people should shoot to horribly maim.

Integrity in all things, I guess, but I know it's futile to expect that of just anyone.

I would like to work for Bioware as Narrative designer, too. Or, to keep it to my language, as a story developer. Alas, I'm stuck in my laboratory with my chemicals and try not to blow up the fume cupboard...

Do you really think they will sue her? Somehow I doubt that, actually.

...and, you folks wonder why SOPA exists. Between the movie, music, and software pirating, I would think everyone would have gotten a clue. Next time someone wants to pass a bill to protect an artist's rights, I suggest everyone take a deep breath and support the damn thing.

Though she did say that she believes someone (likely you) is impersonating him.

Deadmac, SOPA has nothing to do with this.

What you do not know is that its the same damn thing. Why do you think people want the bill passed? It has to do with plagiarism, infringement, and the pirating of copyright content.

"Dragon Age" is a copyrighted piece of work, which a fan had infringed upon to make money. What is the difference between her doing it and someone from another country? SOPA was made to prevent this crap from happening.

Right! Someone even accused me of that in that Amazon discussion page.

Even said we shared similar writing styles, believe it or not.

Say, Mr. Gaider...would you mind terribly if I wrote the next Dragon Age novel? I mean...we are supposed to be virtually indistinguishable.

@Deadmac
Last offtopic post for me.
SOPA and PIPA were horrible bills. Their cousin, the OPEN Act, would do the same thing without threatening innocent websites.

If it has such quality writing as our lovely Michelle Franklin, I'll buy as many books as I can!

I envy you.

If I read something that is really, really bad I just ignore it. I wouldn't laugh about it and share it in an open thread. However, if something like this happens and I see the responses of the author I become downright nasty.

I admit, I'm a closeted ******. <_<

EDIT: This forum really kills me with it's censorship. Really!

SERIOUSLY??  How utterly shameless.  I know not everyone likes lawyers, but Bioware/EA needs to sue.  Only a permanent injunction and a big dose of statutory and punitive damages can shut this...um, woman, up.

And "Dr. Michelle Franklin, Esquire"?  lol...I'm a lawyer, licensed last year in Texas, and I never put Esq. after my name.  Because that's just...ew, plus everyone I know, including all my friends from law school, would just laugh their butts off at me.

There was actually a cardiologist in my law school class, who was getting his J.D. so he could work in health law.  As far as I know, he NEVER referred to himself as "Dr. _____, Esquire," even though he really could have done so.

You know...when she wrote the fan fic and a rave thread was started here, I made just one comment. I said the consummation scene personally scarred me emotionally (specifically because the internal bleeding excites Sten), but to each their own.  I didn't make any effort to criticize, mock, demean, or in any way call attention to her novel. Writing is far too personal a pleasure as is reading.

Even my initial review of her "original book" was done in quietness. That again was based on very specific criticisms- the fact that I thought it was really close to the fan fiction, and that her overuse of metaphors was something I didn't like. I sent a copy of the fan fic to her publisher, but didn't come here to publicize it.

It was only when a fan said in response to my review, that the author had claimed she had never heard of Dragon Age that I brought this to more public attention. Thus, it is really ...ironic that she thinks that after 5 months of posting that review, and only on having that review contested by a claim that I believe to be categorically false (never heard of DA:O) that she thinks I unleashed the troll within.

I'm like that too. Bad fic, I ignore. If I saw the 'disrobing scene' at FFN, I'd probably laugh (come on, it's not possible not to laugh at 'well-knitted knees'!) but I would not leave a review, nor would I post the link to it so that people could mock it.
But plagiarism is not the same as a bad fic. Plagiators disrespect not only the original authors, but also the readers. By pretending that something is their work, they lie, lauging to our eyes.
So I just return the favour.

Oh, she doesn't deserve to be ignored. :) But the focus here should be on her deception. Open slather on her writing style, save to point out similarities to Dragon Age, is counterproductive and will just make us look like trolls instead of people with a legitimate grievance.

Trolling is fun once in a while, but it won't get anyone to take the issue seriously if we're acting like a group of poo-flinging monkeys screeching with all-caps laughter at qunari swords. ;)

All of the attorneys I work with will only use Esq. when addressing a letter to other attorneys, or of course in a legal pleading being submitted to court.  If they are Ph.Ds, they're far more likely to use that in correspondence than Esq.

Generally speaking, the more educated and lauded a person is, the less likely it is that they would willingly show off.

I cannot laugh about it since I do not know what it means, to be honest. Doesn't make sense to me. Is there a meaning behind knitted I don't know? Oh well, I will just ask urban dictionary.

I guess she doesn't have experience with the trolls.
From what I read of the preview, I don't care for her writing. I wouldn't call her horrible, but I would recommend not buying her books, even if they were original.

I'm curious though. Where did she say she had never heard of Dragon Age?

...Thedas is now Thellis.
And the Mivaari!
I kinda wish that she at least tried to hide it.

I didn't mock her writing style but her content. Is that alright? :P I always wonder about the habit of Schlogik in stories, fanfiction or original published books (oh, there are far too many...)

Sorry, Schlogik is a German word I guess, consisting of "schlecht" (bad) and "Logik" (logic), meaning bad logic (duh!) ...... Bogic?

I stopped mocking writing style and grammar a long time ago....
