I'm just fascinating by what she could have been thinking. And what did her fans, who followed her from before she moved from fanfic into plagiarism, think? Or did all of her fans come from afterwards?
This needs to be a Lifetime Movie.

I wonder if the changes to the Qunari in DA2 led this person to suddenly sweep all of her fanfiction into a plagiarized version of Thedas. Maybe her reasoning was that her "epilogue" no longer fit into canon, so she was taking her toys and moving elsewhere.
I think the following and this is entirely my personal opinion ALONE.
She liked Sten, wanted him to be a romanceable character, has some experience designing games, so perhaps she wanted to write about him. People enjoyed her work and told her it was awesome.
Maybe people thought it was so awesome, it was publishable. However, since it was fan fiction, this would have led to legal trouble and require Bioware's permission because even if in the fan fiction her depiction of qunari lore seemed completely her own, the broad themes of typology, species, other characters, land, mythology and the actual character a surly giant with a sweet tooth and a lost sword was based completely on DA:O.
So, she made a few changes, and published it as original work. Maybe she has even convinced herself that there is enough original thought in it that it is no longer what Bioware wrote. Maybe she has convinced herself that anyone who sees the similarities is just delusional. One never knows.

Her fans encouraged her to seek publication.
She encouraged her fans to encourage Bioware to grant publication.
When Bioware said they couldn't agree to anything unless EA did, and EA allegedly can't endorse anything with explicit porn, she removed all internet links she could and redid her fanfics as 'original'.
Here you can see her DevArt alias, MeibatsuRen, discussing it with someone who drew The Sten and the Warden fanart. You can also find some of her original fanfic cached on Google easily enough.

This is an amazing thread. I was laughing myself to tears! Please post more! Maybe as a link to posting it somewhere else? Pretty please?
What I can't get over is that she emailed this to DG like it was the greatest thing evar! What I would have given to be a fly on the wall when he opened that email!
I also can't believe she has (...had) fans. And this is coming from someone who actually likes (some) romance novels - well written ones anyway (Yes! They do exist!) .
Although if you look over that thread that was gushing about her (NOTher) "Sten and the Warden" FF, it's only a few people who just were really devoted to it. Unless there were other threads.
Thanks for making my day!
Edit:

It seems to be that way to me. I mean looking at that gush thread about her work, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of people talking about it in that particular thread, but they were definitely enthusiastic about it. Sounds like a bit of ego getting in the way? And in some ways laziness; she could have reworked it a lot more and made it more original for herself and less of her taking fanfic and publishing it.

Right! Someone even accused me of that in that Amazon discussion page.
Even said we shared similar writing styles, believe it or not.
Say, Mr. Gaider...would you mind terribly if I wrote the next Dragon Age novel? I mean...we are supposed to be virtually indistinguishable.
I must say I had to choke on my curry when I read the editorial reviews comparing the book to Tolkien and Austen. I would think any fantasy writer would know better. It sounds like a really narcissistic individual who let reviews go to her head and made some poor judgment calls. I'll be interested to see how Kindle handles this.
edit- Oh, also, I'll forever and ever be mystified at the female market for rape and torture porn. If a man wrote stuff like that, he'd be hounded out of society. I don't want to understand its appeal.

Sten and the Warden
As the Warden stood upon the deck of the Shanty looking out into the vast azure skies of eastern Thedas, the Sten stood beside her, resting his immense arms upon the forecastle of the ancient and sturdy vessel. At first, he thought to maintain his firm gaze on the tranquil and rippling water lapping at the sides of the young ship, but he soon found his eyes drifting instinctively over to the Warden. He thought of how she had given him the opportunity to redeem his panicked actions and how she, against all he was taught to believe about the deplorableness of humans, had come to gain his esteemed respect. Her proud stance and her valiantly hushed demeanor was something the Qunari found estranged her from the more pitiable of her race. How long it was that he remained peering at her he did not fully know, until the Warden was kind enough to remind him.
“Should I ask why you are so vigilantly gawping at me?” the Warden asked without needing to face the Qunari. She smirked to herself and quickly glanced at Sten from corner of her chestnut-coloured eyes, keeping her face toward the shimmering oceans.
“I am observing you, not staring. There is a difference,” the Sten claimed. He noted her prominent features, her delicately sloping nose, her deep-set eyes, and her tousled dark hair. His eyes grazed her full frame and noted her robust legs carrying her curves as she stood.
“Well, your ‘observation’ is carrying on for quite a while,” she said warily, casting her eyes at her bronze-skinned companion with enmity.
Sten stood tall and turned his attention on the birth of the Waking Sea before him. His mind, however, remained elsewhere.
“Something troubling you? You’re not one to dwell on matters for long,” the Warden remarked, slowly making her way over to the brooding giant.
“You surprise me, Warden,” said the Qunari. The Warden, used to Sten’s dispassionate musings, allowed him to continue, knowing well that his words were meant to be compliments in their own Qunari way. “You are a woman and a human,” he told her. (and goes on to explain why it makes no sense that she is a warrior. Sorry...I am typing as I read and it is long exposition)
From the book that is NOTHING LIKE Sten and the Warden.
The commander stood upon the deck of the large trade vessel looking towards the azure skies of the east and the giant stood quietly behind her. She watched his movements from the corner of her eye; he rested his immense arms upon the forecastle of the ship and watched the rippling waters below as they lapped at the sides of the hull, but each time the ship banked as it sailed across the eastern coast of the continents, his gaze drifted towards her.
“Shall I ask why you’re staring at me?” she said, without looking toward him.
“I am observing you, not staring. There is a difference.” The giant maintained. There was much for him to observe, a sloping nose, full lips and dark eyes, tousled hair, wide hips and strong legs were all in his view and there was little to find fault in so pleasing a woman. His firm gaze became subtle and he neared her without looking away.
“This observation is carrying on for sometime” the commander said verily. “I should wonder what you suddenly find so interesting”
He said nothing, but remained close to her in a silent admiration.
“Something troubling you? You’re not the sort to dwell on matters for too long.”
“You are a confusing woman” Rautu said, his expression growing bemused. “You are a woman and a warrior”
See! No similarities whatsoever.

I'd rather see excepts that showcase the similarities between DA and the author's books, personally.

After a skim, and, in order of similarity:
- Sten has lost his sword, so he cannot return home. The Warden finds it.
Den Asaan Rautu has lost his sword, so he cannot return home. The Commander finds it. (very conveniently might I add) - Kossith are large, grey-skinned and white-haired, with striking eyes.
Haanta are large, grey-skinned and white-haired, with striking eyes. - The Qunari homelands include Par Vollen and Seheron.
The Haanta homelands include Mharvholan and Sanhedhran. - Ferelden can be ruled by Alistair Theirin, who has a brother called Cailan, a rather bumbling king.
Frewyn is ruled by Alasdair Brennin, who has a brother called Allande, a rather terrible king. - Qunari children or imekari are raised by priests, apart from their parents, and assessed for ability and role when they come of age.
Haanta children or mivaari are raised by priests, apart from their parents, and assessed for ability and role when they come of age. - Corrupted saarebas have their tongues cut out.
Vantaala who have harmed people have their tongues cut out. - The main philosopher of the Qunari is koslun.
The main philosopher of the Haanta is Ghaan Khosselin. - Ferelden was at war with Orlais.
Frewyn was at war with Gallei. - Circle Mage Wynne asks Sten if he is chilly, once, and can wonder about knitting Sten a cloak.
Grand Cleric Rithea asks Rautu several times if he is cold, and does attempt to knit him one. - To become a full-fledged mage in Thedas, a mage is sent to confront a demon. The mage either passes, or loses his life/abilities.
To become a full-fledged mage in Frewyn, a lesser demon is conjured for the mage to either confine or banish. The mage either passes, or gets killed by the demon/loses his memories/loses their abilities. - The Qunari are at war with the magisters of Tevinter.
The Haanta are at war with the nation of Thellis. - Sten believes women don't fight.
Rautu believes women don't fight. - Sten likes cookies.
Rautu likes chocolate (and a few other baked goods).

“You have no fear against your adversaries. You have tasted the blood of the Darkspawn and yet live. You know what my people will think of you and you still wish to satisfy your curiosity. You cannot be a simple farmer. It is impossible. A farmer plants and tends to the soil, she does not fight, and certainly not as well as you. If your people had nurtured you properly, you would have been given a more suitable task.”
The Warden lifted her brow inquisitively at the Qunari’s, wondering what could have provoked this strange and sudden inundation of claims. She approached the Sten and placed her hands on her fauld. “If Fereldans followed the Qun, I would not have been made a warrior either. I admit, I was born a farmer’s daughter, and I unfortunately cannot change that. But do you think I should’ve stayed that way, as the rest of your people seem to believe I should have? Just because I was born on a farmstead doesn’t mean I was destined to remain there, covered in mud and cleaning after pigs for the rest of my days,” she said resentfully.
From the book that has absolutely nothing to do with Sten and the Warden.
“You cannot have been raised as a farmer. A farmer plants and tends to the soil. She does not fight and does not do so as adequately as you do. If your people had nurtured you properly, you would have been given a more suitable task”
“According to your traditions, I should be neither farmer not soldier as your women cannot be considered for either profession. I admit I was born a farmer’s daughter but I certainly wouldn’t have remained that way had I not been recruited.

More dissimilarities:
Sten and the Warden
Although he was willing to make an exception for the Warden and bring her to see the lush and balmy haze of Seheron’s white shores, he did not know how well she would be received as she did not follow the Qun. (Because.. ) Her proud stance and her valiantly hushed demeanor was something the Qunari found estranged her from the more pitiable of her race.
From the book that is NOTHING like Sten and the Warden
The Den Asaan was decided- she would come with him to Sanhedhran. He had little idea of how well she would be received, but having her with him in any capacity would be a blessing. (Because) She was the only creature he could abide and her quiet acceptance of his character and her dutiful vigilance had recommended her to him infinitely.
