I'm not sure if it was installing Origin and putting my ME2 cd key into it while ME2 was already installed, but apparently it wiped my entire profile and savegame folder. I had every achievement unlocked, multiple playthroughs (carried over from ME1) complete and the EA support guy had no idea what went on. I even tried using Recuva to see if I could get the files, to no avail.
Is the random disappearance of config, profile and save data a known issue?

This is the first I have heard of it. Even reinstalling the game wont wipe out profiles and saves.
Either you have stumbled across a wierd Origin glitch, or Windows chose a bad time to chuck a spaz attack.

I'm still not sure whether it was Origin or Windows brainfarting, because everything was fine even after Arrival was released, but it was after that that I installed Origin for the Battlefield 3 beta, and it's only since then that I've noticed the files were gone.
It took me a couple of playthroughs to get every achievement so I grabbed ME1 savegames for renegade and paragon characters and will just have to go through the game again, not that it's a chore mind you, just frustratingly inconvenient.
Also, your avatar is awesomely disturbing. Willem Dafoe has the best rapeface I've ever seen.
