Why do people prefer ME2 gameplay?

ME2 had gameplay. Storyline suffered compared to ME1. It was too linear, too character-mapped.
ME3 hopefully will have the best of both worlds.

But that's mostly my own fault for my class choice, I suppose.

It's graphically more pleasing.
It doesn't have the illusion RPG elements that were actually redundant.
It's actually more challenging.
Ammunition was always in the ME 1 codex, now it actually exists.
It's fun, and unless you have a god complex, you'll enjoy tactically killing enemies instead of running through repetitive combat constantly popping Barrier, Immunity, Weapon powers, Lift or Singularity.
Mass Effect One was good, ME 2 removed several redundant features and improved actual gameplay. I can't bother to play ME 1 on harder difficulties because its boring. There's less of a challenge in it the ME 2. For ME 2, it's still fun on lower difficulties. When you overkill both games, you can start to see what makes the combat more enjoyable. As to it, its a personal preference.

This guy, this 'tetrisblock'.
Dis guy... he's un-****in'-believable.
And I prefer ME2 gameplay because aiming doesn't depend on arbitrary points - sniping sucks early in ME1.

The first Mass Effect didn't really feel like a cover based shooter, or at least it wasn't optimized for it. I think this can be attributed mainly to ME1s much weaker health and shield regeneration, tougher and more mobile enemies and the available cover been so scattered and spread out. Why people would rather have ME2 style of combat I don't know...
Note that while ME1's health and shield regeneration were weaker, shields and health were also weaker. I'm also not sure the enemies are actually tougher. I've just replayed ME1 and am starting on 2, so my memory of ME1 is pretty fresh, and things seemed to drop about as fast in ME1.
Also note that ME1's gameplay completely falls apart past the midgame, where a competent player can keep enemies stunlocked -- or at least weapons locked -- and gun them down without any risk. I'm guessing that this is what the ME2 designers wanted to avoid.
Edit: of course, some people find pwning the enemies in the late game to be fun. If that's your thing then sure, you'll like ME1 combat better.

Better frame rate, tighter camera control, faster overall, better AI, better everything. ME2 combat is among the best of any RPG imo.
Oh dear, what have you done.

I'll never get tired of the Lift/Throw combo in ME1. Watching people fly into space was always funny.
This thread is getting locked, but beforehand, I agree. Sometimes its not all that challenging, but there's something wildly fun about walking into a room and owning everyone. (Right now I'm recalling the last battle climbing on the outside of the Citadel.)

Alan: Yeah, well it doesn't make much sense to fault Biowares balance for breaking down past the midgame... it's a really delicate balance that very few RPGs succeed at.
But it's relevant here, since ME2 does better at this than ME1 does. Much better.
Partly because ME1 fails so badly, of course. Edit: fails at this aspect of balance, I mean; I don't want to sound like ME1 combat was a total failure.
