Some items can be sold to a vendor. You close their store, then take a look. Sometimes, those items will increase in quality. I've seen a base Crow Dagger increase up to a three-slotted Dragonbone Crow Dagger. I sold two at the same time. One raised to Dragon Bone and the other raised to Silverite with, I believe, 2 slots instead of 3.
The only place I know this works for certain is Warden's Keep.

i did it at ozmar at lvl 21. i sold it to the npc dwarf nearest to the entrance towards the noble area.
i sold all 3 pieces at once and zone up to noble map, zone back to merchant area and they were upgraded instantly.
shale's crystal are also upgradable this way but they are randomised. meaning u sell green crystal they will become red or blue etc. i upgrade his crystals all to brilliant level.

Does anyone know if this can be done for the Knight Commander's Armor and the Blood Dragon Plate? Those two are both silverite... would be nice to have them in dragonbone.
Some pieces of equipment are silverite for the looks of the material. They wanted the item to have a silver finish so they chose silverite. Blood Dragon Plate, The Edge, Templar Armor etc. The downside is on weapons more than armor since they can add +armor to items like diligence gloves to make them superior to dragonbone. But weapons get handicapped with 2 rune slots when they cap at silverite.
After two full playthroughs legit I'm now a mod **** using "winter forge" mod to create my own items. I find myself choosing silverite for looks as well but at least I can add +dmg +stun +paralyze +armor as I wish.
The wardens keep armor is great upgraded to dragonbone since it retains its looks. The warden tower shield will not upgrade it remains silverite for looks even at level 25. The named equipment is hit or miss as to wether it will upgrade this way. Some does some doesn't. Also each piece has a different level to upgrade for armor. For example I recall warden commander plate boots, chest, and gloves upgrading at different levels. IIRC gloves were the last piece.

Is this the 'Gem Vendor' you're selling them to. I think he just has a random selection of crystals whenever you enter the zone, so there's no need to sell your own crystals to him for an upgrade.

It didn't shoot to tier 7 though. I know at level 15 you can get tier 7 stuff.

Coin drop and quest rewards as you progress through the game and charater levels is probably something Bioware can/should tweak to smooth out the progression a bit, but I didn't really start getting enough coin until the mid-teen character levels. (maybe 14 or so when I first noticed). Up until that point, the coin drops and quest rewards are a bit light comparitively speaking, and you won't really be able to equip your whole group in level-appropriate gear until you pass over the hump in treasure table curve.
If it were me, based on my limited number of play throughs at the higher levels (I've started many games, but made new characters before finishing the game) I would probably enjoy increasing the income at lower levels and decreasing it at higher levels.

Perhaps Bioware can add a patch to install a mythical forge somewhere deep in the dark roads where you can upgrade weapons and armour at a price.
The coin for this can come from certain dragon or mythical beasts slaying quests.
cheers

Anybody?
For me it was a mixed bag so to say b/c one time I put an armor set in my chest at Soldier's Peak (DLC) then exited then reselected the chest to have it upgraded to tier 7 at lv18 I think. Other items I had to leave Soldier's Peak & return later after an adventure or two.
SO I'm fairly certain it may be very random & not have a set level but a general level range, really hard to say though. Hope that helped a little bit.

I got the wardens armor which is scaled I believe to level 3 as Alistair is only level 8. If I go to Soldiers peak and sell it to the vendor...then zone out....and come back it should be upgraded yes? I'm assuming I need to do this at level 10 when a new tier is available?

I just used the vendor mechanic (Mikael Dryden in Soldier's Peak) to upgrade my Warden Commander armor set from Tier 4 (I acquired it around level 8 originally) to Tier 7. It cost a total of 35g to buy the three Tier 7 pieces back from the vendor.

It has much more to do with the Combat Training skill.
Quick tip that works if you have the Wardens Keep DLC.
If you have any armor you want to upgrade and you have the highest Combat Training skill you can sell him the armor and when you buy it back it will have a higher tier.

Are you sure about that? I ended up upgrading from Red Steel to Dragonbone Warden Commander armour with level 1 Combat Training....
