Please discuss your thoughts on EDI's apparent role in Mass Effect 3 here. I understand that there's currently a thread going on over in the ME3 General Discussion Board, and I don't mean to steal its thunder, but this ought to be here anyway because sooner or later the mods might ask us to take it here. That and, well, EDI deserves her own thread in this section.

I also understand that many of you have plenty of harsh criticisms in store for BioWare's controversial change in EDI's appearance. And a great many of you also harbor negative thought to the potential for EDI's potential Joker romance to take something away from you that you've wanted for a long, long time -- the opportunity to romance Joker.

Well, I don't share your desires but I've always believed that the maximum number of fans, within reason, ought to be able to get what they want ouf ot the series if at all possible. So I do empathize. I wouldn't be remotely opposed to an opportunity to veer Joker wayward of EDI if it helped matters for you. I just wouldn't ever go that route, personally.

The very nature of this character thread is going to end up promoting plenty of opposing viewpoints. I'm OK with this. Whereas most character thread creators aren't quite as thrilled with the possibility of harsh criticisms and negativities being leveled at their characters, I will ask upfront that you simply be civil about it, that's all. Trying to get the mods to help deny your ability to speak your mind on the matter of EDI's transformation would be silly. I know it's a very passionate subject for a lot of people.

Enough prologue. Enjoy. I'll start posting images and sprucing this opening post up as best as possible once I feel we're allowed to actually post them. For now, refrain from doing so or the thread may be shut down. Thanks.

Oh, here's a great post from AVPen detailing what EDI's Powers loadout will be -- or at least, what it was in the beta. Everything is subject to change, of course.

AVPen wrote...
Yes, EDI definitely a Tech class - her power loadout is listed as consisting of:
- Overload
- Decoy
- Incinerate
- Defense Matrix

As it's name suggests, "Decoy" creates a decoy to draw enemies attention (it's sorta like a combat drone, but without any offensive capabilities until it's later evolution Ranks), while "Defense Matrix" is a new armor power that decreases damage and will boosts your shields when you detonate the power.

Please note that this won't be all she has, either. Squadmates in ME3 appear to possess more abilities than what was seen in ME2. She'll have a passive as well. She'll also have more evolutions for each Power -- that's an ME3 staple. Six evolutions per ability, with the latter three containing a branching path.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I actually liked her page in the art book.

I'll start.

It's ridiculous and pointless.

Of all characters from previous games, she shouldn't be chosen to be squadmate in ME3.

And she looks very, very bad.

*sigh*

My only hope she doesn't become bad as ME1 Liara Asari.

I do like the look, but I'll wait for the game to make a call on the character. Not sure it isn't just a dumb, pandery move.

Currently, I am mildly disappointed, but cautiously hopeful.

She was obviously put in to be a guaranteed squadmate to have in ME3, as opposed to past squadmates who could be dead.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with her on the team, but she's probably near the bottom of my ME3 squadmates list. That's more to do with how much I like most of the rest of the squad than with any negative opinions towards her, though.

Is she a actual squad member this time? Not just a ship AI or a crew member?

Yes.

So much for support -_-

Oh well. I liked EDI in ME2, and I'm sure I'll like her in ME3. If she is a squadmate, I'll take her along a fair bit.

I hate her as a squadmate.

I wanted her to be the counterpoint the Reapers. An AI in a ship but instead of killing organics she empathized, protected and understood them.

With this new body thing and her becoming more "person." its bleh.

JokerxEDI is just pathetic and creepy to me.

I like EDI on her own well enough but based off the leaked script I'm gonna loathe her in the robot body.

You aren't. I'm quite happy with her looks. Imagined her a bit more like Rommie of Andromeda ... but yeah, fits. Lets hope for the final EDI in ME3 B)

That's your decision. If you'd read the OP you'd understand that I'm fine with criticisms as well. But understand that there are opposing viewpoints at play here. I might be in the minority but I do support the Joker/EDI relationship.

It's funny. I don't really support a lot of the cross-species relationships the fandom has envisioned. I just tolerate them. I don't find them creepy though. But now there's a synthetic involved and all of a sudden it's creepy.

I... don't know what to think. So for now, I'm just going to avoid thinking. I'll see how that goes.

Hello Man wrote...

Like I said in the other post. I'm ok with the Robot body thing. But why would she need one when she is the ship and can pop out randomly if she wanted to from time to time. I guess their could be a short story behind it were she actually wanted a body.

Joker can't have sex with the ship.

To be honest.... I would have maybe kept her robot body and just have her hang over at the Normandy but not make her a squadmate...

A batarian would have been much more intresting to have as an actual squadmate. Also if you wanted to have a synthetic squadmate wouldnt Legion have served that purpose better? He's already got a fanbase and lore behind him, why not expand it?

Here's one thing you can do if you don't like her body: Use it as a meat shield. Or a metal shield, if you will.

Since she can't die and the worst thing that can happen is that you lose the body, then it's better to use her than those other fleshy things, right?

Not sure if that was sarcasm but i wouldve prefered Legion instead.

It was inevitable. I only hope that once people play the game support levels might rise. Of course, there's also the chance that this thread will go down in flames because enough people will absolutely abhor her. Never know.

I think allowing the Joker/EDI thing to be shaped by the player -- that is, giving Shepard the opportunity to nip it in the bud -- might alleviate a lot of the stress for all but the staunchest critics.

Then again, as I said a moment ago, this is apparently creepy. Turian/human, turian/quarian, drell/krogan, it's all good fun, but this? This is just disgusting... apparently.

JOKER/EDI RELATIONSHIP?

Uh that's to much to handle for me. I know you love your ship but you don't actually have to love it. EDI Legion would make more sense to me.

EDI isn't a ship. She's an AI. And AIs can come in all forms.

Anyone here who appreciated Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica ought not to have much issue with this.

Incidentally, I haven't read the leak, if this even turned up in the leaked bits. I'm going to consider it an enormous disappointment if she doesn't ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL the first time she's transferred across, though.

Probably because said synthetic (at least so far) hasn't been shown to have emotions like an organic. And is woefully naive about basic human interaction and socially retarded. It's like romancing a very young and naive person who doesn't get out much and doesn't have any friends.

It's not "all of a sudden just because she's synthetic." far more factors are at play than her being synthetic.
