Outside of the main story arch.
I want to streamline my Mass Effect playthroughs, so I'm done with doing all the tiny little sidequests.
Does anyone have an opinion on what is the important stuff?
What do you consider the important missions?

My opinion.... besides saving/killing the Rachni queen, killing/not killing wrex, saving/not saving the council, who you pick for human council, and your LI, i dont think that many other things matter TOO much. but besides that im not quite sure what you are asking/looking for. I dont see why not getting the top spot in all the little 12 spectre things (DLC), getting the retirement location (DLC), and save that planet (bringing down the sky, again DLC). They have to have some kind of role I think

I know what you mean about doing the small missions. I feel the same way and have also considered the question.
I assume you are not XP hunting.
Apart from the main plot missions, the only really important non-obligatory mission is the Luna mission if you are playing a new character as you get the specialisation benefit.
If you want to save Wrex without putting points into Paragon/Renegade, then the Wrex armour mission is important.
Doing Asari Diplomancy is useful because it can give you access to a bigger range of bio-amps.
Apart from that it really depends on how you want to relate ME1 to ME2 for story purposes and are optional.
If you like Tali, or are interested inromancing her in ME2, then I think doing the Geth incursion mission is worthwhile.
Likewise, if you see Garrus as your big pal or want to make him an LI in ME2, I think the Garrus mission may be is worthwhile for story purposes
If you want to be really anti-Cerberus in ME2, then for story purposes doing the Cerberus missions may appeal.
For a paragon Shepard, I think BdtS is an important mission as it will save a lot of lives. Plus you get a decent piece of equipment. However, a Ruthless Shepard would probably not do this.

If it's the first time through with the character you'll probably want to do 'Rogue VI' for your prestige class, Apart from that, it depends on what you want to do, as otherlander says.

Well, I know the Consort and Trinket carries over, as well as Conrad Verner, Asari Diplomacy I think carries a flag, you handling of Tali's info does, your background quests do, how you handle the colonist and the idiot corporate hack on Feros does, how you handle Wrex does, the Cerberus Scientists dying mission sets a flag, BdtS sets flags, whether you paragoned or Renegaded Garrus sets flags. These are all the ones I know that can make a difference off the top of my head, there are probably others, but these I know set flags in ME2 for carry over.

I am not sure that doing some of these side-missions carries over.
My current Shepard didnot do any of the Cerberus side-missions in ME1. So when Jacob talked about Cerberus, my Shepard's response was that he didn't know who Cerberus was. Then Jacob went to say that Shepard went on to destroy many Cerberus bases, which did not happen in my playthrough. So it shows that the response did not match the action sin ME1 with respect to that at least.

There are more cases of this inconsistency. If you chose a renegade answer when EDI first appears Miranda will say Shepard has encountered many hostile AIs, including geth and "the Hannibal system on Luna", even if you never went to Luna. There is a list somewhere of what exactly carries over, it's fairly easy to google. I'd say it's definitely worth it to finish Garrus's, Tali's and Wrex's sidequests, save Conrad Verner (he is a One Scene Wonder in ME2), finish Cerberus/Kahoku storyline... Definitely complete Asari Diplomacy for more continuity in Thane's recruitment mission... There are many things, but then again, I am a completionist

Not many matter. At least in me1. In me2 it seems like it will more like with mordins side quest.
