Mass Effect Past and Future

The latest MassEffect 3-trailer released December of 2011, the voice in myhead noted; that Mass Effect had shiftedtowards something different... Something that was awaiting in thedepths of Dark Space.
Why has Mass Effect (largely influenced by thesequel), combine a mission layout that on average takes 30minuets to complete (slowly pacing one's self)?
Also, Mass Effect: 2 felt as though it had limited side-quest(s) options. (When does buying an engineupgrade count as a side-quest?).
It seems that Mass Effect: 1 had afairly well designed side-quest(s) layout than Mass Effect: 2. Although Mass Effect was rich in gameplay mechanics, felt as though some of the game was missing, (perhaps an all powerful publisher assumed control?).
But I can hypothesize that the publisher(Electronic Arts) wanted a sequel with additional shelf-life(to continue to create a profit, well after the original launch)? It could be possiblethat the publisher, over the last few years might have encouraged or demanded their partners to design a sort of download-able content viaon-line access code(s), in-order to have additional feature(s) of theproduct unlocked. Example., on-line code(s) that are required formultiplayer, the source listed below can explain in greater detail. But if thats true, does that mean I buy a game that missing objects, stories, etc?

a well desinged layout? driving around in a mako in rediculous places for one mission is a well designed layout?
