I seriously mean that.

I review games for a hobby, and decided to take on Mass Effect. After thinking about the game for a long time, I realized Mass Effect IS better then Star Wars.

It's not more original then Star Wars, but if originality was your guage for a good story, then you can't possibly like Star Wars (it's quite deriverative - this, IMHO doesn't make it bad).

ME on the other hand, does everything better then Star Wars that it can for a video game. The world/lore is more cohesive and rich, the characters present more diverse and complex personalities and motivations.

The THEMES are particularly impressive in ME, making star wars look like a freaking storybook.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE star wars, and I LOVE what it did for Science Fiction. But I think ME is just a far better narrative and has a better atmosphere. This could also be because Videogames are (IMHO) a better medium for storytelling then film (exposition is easier, for example in a video game).

If you want to see the review, it's here;

But the point of this thread is not for my review, it is:

Star Wars vs Mass Effect: which is more compelling?

Prequel is a no-brainer, but no, I mean original. It is better then the original trilogy. :D

As a narrative, absolutely... as a universe, no. Star Wars is too big to be toppled, it'll only have peers (at the most) from now on.

Which Star Wars?

The Old Republic, being made by Bioware, has pretty much the same claims to everything that made Mass Effect interesting, plus the advantage of lessons learned.

Nothing is really original in ME. Been done in many other sci-fi films, books, games etc. Alien invasions are not really unique.

Star Wars isn't really that original at all, it is basically a Cliche Storm. But goddamn if it isn't executed perfectly.

Firefly/Serenity > Star Wars anyway.

Also, inb4 the flame war that this topic will likely cause.

Star Wars would suck without the EU. KOTOR and KOTOR II were the best things to happen to the franchise.

I actually prefer Farscape, but I recognize that most major science fiction franchises have their good and bad.

THIS is a good point.

Originality is a moot point, so that argument about which is better based on Originality can't be made.

Instead, which story has the better themes and characters? I would say Star Wars is not rich enough in theme or atmosphere compared to Mass Effect.

ME addresses SO many interesting themes and has a much better narrative arc.

Just looking at the simple fact ME relates better to Humanity (thus giving audiences a better link to the film's narrative compared to foriegn galaxy humans that mean nothing like in Star Wars)

ME is definately more mature, regardless of which narrative is better.

Farscape is definitely the most creative sci-fi I've seen in a long time. And some of the episodes would probably win my best comedy award.

Dargo on a gender bender for the lulz :D

Star Wars greatness was from its influence, not so much directly.

It's analogous to comparing any modern band to the Beatles.

These are two different franchises that are, if just considering the Star Wars trilogy/saga, from two different mediums. The narratives will function differently, as well as your experience with that universe. You don't get the attachment to the narrative and characters of Star Wars like you do with Mass Effect because you are only a spectator when watching those films. The same goes with any sci-fi media across mediums.

I liked KOTOR II before it was cool to. Actually, I think it's still not cool to like KOTOR II.

I agree, Videogames are a superior narrative medium. Thats part of the argument.

It is inherently better then star wars, when compared on the field of "visual sci fi".

It is probably unfiar, but the fact is it IS better.

You not the only one...  Like Kotor and Kotor 2 make of fact if was not from them..I would not be  that big of a Star Wars fan..

I like the concept of the Exile and  dear lord in heaven  Kiera and Vissa Marr.

The boss Battle with Darth Scion.. having to talk him into believing that he would lose so the he would let go of his will to live. .

That Being said... Mass Effect better than Stars Wars..

I won't got that far...its almost borderline hersay to say so .
