Better than the original trilogy? I can see it.
Better than KotOR 1 and 2? Utterly impossible.

Honestly, ME is better than KotOR 1 imo. KotOR 2 is cult. Maybe we should ask Obsidian if they want to finish the ME franchise. And this time without LA pushing release.
KotOR 2 is always difficult to talk about for me. Overall, I find the original to be more polished and complete. It also got me into the Bioware style RPG, so I'm somewhat biased. But despite its flaws, the areas where KotOR 2 does right are far superior to the original installment, with respect to characters, narrative, and dialogue. It did a spectacular job of creating this sense of hopelessness and despair regarding the current state of the galaxy.

ME's "mark" has certainly been made on video game and sci-fi culture, whether you like the game or not. I guarantee you 5-10 years from now people will still look back at this game series both as developers and fans. In that way, it's comparable to Star Wars, if you believe that.
But yeah, whoever made the point about not being able to fairly compare Star Wars and ME due to the different medium and very different story approach, and even different target market imo, was spot on. Personally I don't like Star Wars or the universe that much, but I can't deny it's made it's mark on nerd culture, so to speak. Star Wars staying power is pretty amazing, imo.

Honestly the narration in Homeworld 1 & 2 are better than any dialog that happens in ME1 or 2.

I always like to say that KotOR 2 had the potential to be a much, much better game than the first one, especially because its story was less conventional but more compelling, but also because it made a lot of incremental improvements to most of the game mechanics of the first one. (Force Speed, though, was still outrageously overpowered.) But it never reached that potential because LucasArts forced Obsidian to release the game earlier than planned, resulting in an enormous amount of cut content and a badly disjointed and buggy final product. Even when a lot of that content was restored, by TSLRCM, it still didn't live up to the full potential that the game had. (The ending, in particular, was still unfinished.)Il Divo wrote...

That's a pretty accurate assessment. As an Xbox player, unfortunately I never got around to any of the Restoration Projects, though I heard nothing but good things. It's just a huge shame because when I look at that long list of unfinished ideas for the game, it may potentially have shot up to my favorite game of all time if Obsidian had been given the time to finish implementing them, especially with how they wanted to handle the Love Interests, companions vs. Kreia, etc.

Mass Effect is a different beast though... Everyone says it combines Star Wars with Star Trek, but I feel it combines aspirational fantasies from just about every genre. Espionage, intrigue, thriller, romance, comedy, operatic fantasy, you name it. Thematically, it deals with nearly every sci fi trope I know of in addition to all the real world stuff like the dynamics of politics, racism, family, military life, diplomacy, economics, corporations, organized crime, galactic history, etc.
What really makes Mass Effect the best for me is all the relationships it creates. Not just with the characters, although those obviously stand out, but the relationships between entire factions and locations throughout the galaxy. This whole thing with the Krogans and Salarians and Turians and Quarians and Geth... they're all interconnected in this very intricate and complex web that just makes the universe extremely compelling. Even the humans have a relationship with the rest of the galaxy; the newcomer upstarts who everyone's afraid of because of how quickly they rise through the ranks of this "web." And when you think of it, the Star Wars movies never bother delving into the roles of each of its races, let alone explaining why humanity exists a long time ago in a galaxy far away...

Also, I play as femshep - because she's awesome Female player characters FTW - the context makes the adventure so much more interesting.
Don't ever feel the need to justify playing Femshep. Good roleplayers aren't intimidated by sex or gender.
No he didn't need to justify why he plays as a female character however I'm glad he did, it sends up little "pervert lowlife" flags when male gamers play as female characters... especially if they always talk about "little blue babies" and stuff of that sort aswell.
I honestly don't understand what a man gets from roleplaying a female character instead of a male one, reading novels where they switch characters and it comes around to some female and her "feelings" is hell however you can't not read it or you might miss something
Guess I'm just behind enemy lines, soon some guy with a "my little pony" avatar or sig will show up and expect people to take him seriously
On topic: that ME review was well done though.

I really don't get why people immediately jump to that conclusion. Some men just like the concept of a strong female protagonist, often has nothing to do with sex appeal, nor does it mean they are less masculine. I think it's a little immature and close minded to assume the only reason a man would play a woman charachter is for sex appeal. Anyways, it's pretty natural for men to be attracted to women in the first place, so I barely fault people for that either. It honestly baffles me people still think along these lines.
ANYWAYS, back on topic -- I think the person a couple posts above me hit the nail on the head for Mass Effect. The total experience and the complete immersion on so many levels that so many people can relate to in so many ways, both in a sci-fi, fantasy sense, and in a personal sense is what makes ME's story and universe so great to me.

Why? I definitely believe that Homeworld is one of the greatest narratives of the 90s in the way it was told but Mass Effect borrowed a lot from the whole Homeworld series, and so much more...

-The council discovers the race of Reapers is real...and then decides there really was just one, and pretends they don't exist anymore?
-Shepherd is resurrected, asks one question, and then doesn't think about it again?
-Plus everyone he meets, who knows he was dead, do not question his reappearance at all?
-Nor does the universe blink despite the fact that resurrection is now possible?
The "logic" in all of this is so laughably bad. Did you watch a playthrough of the games on youtube, or did you actually play and follow the story?
The Council dismissed Sovereign as a Geth ship. Everyone who knew Shepard previously was shocked that he was alive. Then, once news got out, it was still mentioned. But, the initial surprise was already out of the way. Mass Effect is a living, breathing universe, and events aren't happening simultaneously.
Making stuff up to prove a point is probably not the best way to go.

Its not a "bad" thing per se, as they have to fit both gameplay AND story segregation, but its there.

Star Wars is a part of the fiber of my being. Mass Effect is too but Star Wars is much more established. I think once we get more and more games/movies/books/comics/other mediums worth of content, then we can more adequately compare. There is soooo much history with Star Wars that you can get lost in its lore for months on end IP-wise, but Mass Effect - all you need to do is read roughly three books, play three games and a few comics and you're all but an expert on the goings-on of the universe. With Star Wars you have vastly different time periods to explore that make it seem endless when it comes to content and discovery.
Now with ME, the sky is the limit, but until we get more from this IP, it will play a close second to Star Wars IMO.
Although aside from Star Wars, Mass Effect is my next favorite IP ever.
