I've just finished gathering my allies with the warden treaties, and I am still using the Juggernaut Armor from the Brecilian Forest. I've compared the set with my other two (Legion Armor & Dragonbone) and it seems to be the better one, but not by a large margin. Is Juggernaut the best armor set so far, or did I miss something?

If you are a Templar, then the Knight Commander's Armor is the foundation of the best equipment you will use. But then again, I value 100% magic resistance higher than I do some extra armor.

the best matched sets of Massive Armor in the game are Blood Dragon, Juggernaut, and Legion of the Dead. each has its own strengths but all 3 are high end. I tend to prefer Blood Dragon cuz its the shiniest. The +50 health and somewhat less fatigue than the other sets are nice too.

The Warden Commander armor is potentially a 4th high end set if you can figure out a way to get its tier raised to 7 (usually its found at around tier 3 if you do Warden's Keep early in the game like most). There are various methods for that, the easiest is probably using a reload trick with the storage chest at Warden's Keep or with Bodahn Feddic in your party camp.

mix and match can probably get the best results of all though if you find the best in slot pieces for each spot.

i'd probably go with the following mix and match set:

Head: Helm of Honnleath
Gloves: Wade's Superior Dragonbone Plate Gloves
Chest: Blood Dragon Plate Armor
Boots: Warden Commander's Boots

in terms of pure stat bonuses thats probably the best you can do. it will provide you with nearly the highest armor level as well, particularly if you can get the Warden Commander's Boots tier upgraded somehow.

Yeah, that's almost exactly what I am using as well except I also have Wades boots. I may have to reconsider. The one thing that's kind of a downer for me (in a mostly aesthetic sense) is that I obtained Wade's armor pretty early on and since then I've come across the Juggernaut, Wardens, Legion of Dead, and so on and I'd like to wear the full sets because they look great but my practical side wins out so I wear the best of all of them. I am playing with two warriors (my hero is 2H ret pally style and Allistar is sword and board tank) so it's interesting mixing and matching the different named armor pieces between us for maximum effect. It may seem obvious to give the tank the best armor but he dies frequently and I end up tanking many of the fights. I am still getting used to learning to balance the micro management play style vs.using the auto tactics. Sometimes I just jump in and do it all myself (on the hero). Usually works if I have plenty of health pots but it's tough for me to get out of the real time-one person Oblivion fighting mindset hehe.

The level/tier of an item is determine by when you obtain it?  Sorry I have to ask this but i'm pretty new to this game. :innocent:

Yes Juz, some items tier is determined when you acquire it. The Warden Commander armor is one of these.

However if you sell it to the blacksmith from WK, it will be upgraded if you leave and come back. It will cost a lot to purchase though, so be careful.

I wouldn't actually count the Legion armor amongst the game's "top class" armors. It's bonuses simply aren't that impressive compared to what other armors sport.
For tanking(just gonna list the relevant stats on armors), Blood Dragon(highest set armor level in the game, +50 health and minor defense/deflection bonuses) and Juggernaut(very broad assortment of resists, constitution bonus) are the top contenders, for DPS(assuming you wanna wear Massive Armor) it's gotta be Warden Commander(+0.5 stamina regen, +15% critical/backstab damage, +50 stamina, -10% fatigue) or Wade's Sup Dragonbone(+2 stamina regen, +25 stamina, -10% fatigue). If it doesn't HAVE to be Massive, Wade's Sup Dragonskin with it's ridiculously low(negative actually, way negative) fatigue modifier takes the cake for serious skill spamming.

I found I could actually where Wade's Heavy armor with 0 fatigue penalty, and I was tempted. Warden Commander's and Dragon Bone are so comparable I had a tough time picking.

Juggernaut seems the flat out best for tanking, all the really tough fights in the game become much easier with good resists. The little extra stats Blood Dragon gives you don't seem to be worth as much as resisting Gaxkang's Cone of Cold or not taking any damage from dragonbreath.

I wonder if mixing-and-matching produces better results. (My problem with Blood Dragon is that you have that amazing chestpiece and every other piece seems kinda poo.)

Juggernaut Set(which has to include the helm for the set bonus) sports 28.31 armor, whereas Blood Dragon Set(which does not have to iclude it's helm for the bonus) with Bergen's Honor as your helm can field a whopping 35.91(even if you "just" use the Blood Dragon Helm, it's still a respectable 34.31). The difference per hit is definitely noticeable. The resists make Jugs better against non-physical damage still, but overall Blood Dragon's higher armor equalizes or beats that over the course of most battles.

It's rather amusing that the best tanking armors are both Tier 6, instead of Tier 7.

I'd definitely shoot for the warden's set over legion, or even blood dragon personally.

I can't really see how blood dragon armour is worse than legion of the dead for dps 0_o The only stats that directly affect "dps" on legion are the attack on the gloves, and the + 3 damage set bonus...the +3 willpower barely even offsets the huge fatigue rating.

Now, the chest alone of blood dragon gives 3 strength, which is equal to 1.5 attack, and 3+ damage depending on the str modifier of the weapon being used...not to mention it gives -10% to fatigue AND willpower 0_o The only real benefit to legion, is the slightly higher armour rating per individual piece, and set bonus from wearing only 3 pieces, whereas blood dragon gives a raw +50 health (or just over 3 levels worth of constitution).

As others have said though, warden's is one to look at if you're dealing damage. It seems to have the perfect balance of stats for that off-tank/damage build. What's even better, is you can tailor it to fit your own needs (to an extent). If you want to skimp on the armour rating to avoid heavier fatigue penalties, then just get it early. If you want the armour to be higher, then get the set whenever you like...later levels means higher tier (or use the sell trick after obtaining it early).

Depends on what you want...obviously the massive armors are going to have the best stats but if you want to use any of your special abilities medium armor might be more your speed.

Legion's higher base armor rating is void, because Blood Dragon has huge armor bonuses(both on the Plate and set bonus) that give it the highest armor in the game. Oh and BD also gets it's set bonus from 3 pieces, the helm isn't needed to activate it.
Legion just doesn't compare well to the top armors, wether in the DPS or Tanking department(I know you were largely making that same point, but it bears repeating).

For a tank, I think that Juggernaut is the best because it provides good armor value against physical attacks, and a lot of resistance against magical attacks.

Juggernaught (4set)is indeed great tanking armor, great armor and resists.

Superior dragonscale (3set)is good too. Good armor +5 defense set bonus and Stam regen and - fatigue is great to use more tank talents in battle. Also a fantastic DPS set.

Effort set (4set)is nice too, increasing healing effects on you (currently bugged and not working) and -fatigue.

the Warden Commander set (3set) is good also and looks fantastic imo. With the stam bonuses and -fatigue mean more option in battles too. Good DPS set too.

Knight Commander armor if your a templar and want great spell resistance.

Blood Dragon is a good set too but tbh i dont like the look/colour.

Many Massive set are good for DPS builds, but do you want the adding aggro for wearing Massive armor (tho their doesnt seem to be many good heavy DPS sets, unless ive missed them ingame).

Personally i'd always use a set as the set bonuses are generally good and it looks better than having mismatched pieces of armor. Also the 3 set piece armors allow you to use a helm of your choice while Juggernaught doesnt.

Im currently using Superior dragonbone and helm of honn for my Tank, but then i dont use any other warriors in my Party unless i have to for Plot reasons.

My favorite armor sets are (also based on looks):

Warden Commander's set (upgrade it to tier 7 by getting it later in the game when you are higher level or by selling it to a vendor like the smith Mikhail outside the keep and re-buying it, then it'll provide good armor, crit damage boost, stamina, stamina regen, making sustained abilities cheaper to maintain and health boost--I love this set.)

Effort set w/Duty Helmet (good armor, boost to healing received, makes sustained abilities cheaper to keep active and has a little more varied stats overall compared to alot of the other sets--ask Dog to dig within Deep Roads to find helmet--+1 strength sells it! (Ok, maybe not..))

Wade's Superior Dragonbone set (high armor, stamina regen, fire resistance, defense boost and it makes sustained abilities cheaper to keep active--pay 10G for the first Drake Scale set (don't bother with second as it doesn't change anything) to get the Superior Dragon Scale set.)

Juggernaut set (high armor, alot of resists, boost to strength and constitution)

Ancient Elven set (I'd love this set because of the looks.. if only the boots weren't bugged and missing from the PC game :-/ --I still use the helm and body on Zevran though.)

Other than that, I do use the Wade's Superior Drakeskin set on Leliana, and it's not like it's bad.. I just don't fancy the look that much. I also keep around a few other nice looking armor pieces, like the Templar armor (won't bother buying the Knight-Commander one, since I wouldn't use it on anyone atm.), and I must admit that the Blood Dragon Armor set is in fact nice overall, stats wise and also on the model.. the textures are just horrible though, washed out and low-res compared to alot of the other armors... I wish BioWare would re-texture it in a patch. Can't say I totally love the glowing neon lights either, but it's a matter of taste. I forgot the name of the piece atm., but there is also a pretty nice looking body armor at the Dalish camp as an reward for finding Iron Bark(?) in the forrest. I typically persuade him to make me both the body and bow.. even though I never end up using either. Perhaps I will use the body on Zevran later on, not sure. Thane's Helmet is also quite fun looking, Honnleath Helm is a nice helmet and I like the look as well. Fade Wall is a nice shield, in terms of stats and I also kinda like the look. Topsider's Hilt is decent looking sword and has alright stats, Starfang (1H or 2H) has nice stats, but I can't say I love either of the versions in terms of looks. There's too many pieces of armor I keep around because of the looks to write down here I guess, and I forget the name on some of them, hehe.

Good question, but I can't remember right now. A quick way for you to check it, is to examine the item. It will say if it can be combined with others to provide a set bonus. Also I agree that Morrigan's upgrade armor is the best she can get for herself, I can't wear it on the PC version at least, hehe.

ah btw tried the havy for sale at wade with the wade heavy boots and gloves and it gives dragon set bonus so is a pretty good choice, just 1 armor less than massive dragon but with better stats, of course it can go with diligence boots and gloves for better armor at cost of no set bonus and mismatched colors :P
