hmm thats a a green elf.. this is the type of elves that many do not like, they see humans as inferior and barbaric. rofl! And they only come out at night time, if any man wonder close to them they are doom and never seen again.

Says who? Is there some International Certification Board on Elves that decreed that the above is a) green elf, and that B) said green elves see humans as inferior, only come out at night, and the occasional human straggler is doomed never to be seen again?

Though, even that would be preferable to Dolly the pointy-eared clone.

I like Elves due to the perks they get, but the back story makes or breaks the liking. One thing I have been noticing is that because of their long life they tend to not really get riled up and that basic aloofness is a turn off. Plus I'm a powerhouse player normally (though in DA2 I love the thief!) Elves just aren't the hulking brute I normally run.

PS BioWare... please add a smash chest/break lock option for a non thief option to treasure chests.

I like elves. But I HATE the way they changed them in DA2. Oh, Zev what have they done to you? (Merril is the exception though.)

I don't hate elves at all. I want them back as a playable race (but not looking as awful as they do in DA2). I prefer playing dwarves (female dwarves to be specific) but I like the elves just fine. The city elves in particular have an interesting plight that I wish we would have a chance to explore more. Like so many story ideas from DAO and DA2, their trials and tribulations (and the fate of the Alienage slaves in Minrathous) will probably be dropped like a hot nug sandwich.

I like elves. I like the fact that in the world of DA, the elves are not exalted Tolkien-ish godlings, in particular the city elves, but are more humbled and sympathetic characters. They are easier to relate to and the challenges that they face living in a world that views them in general with distrust and scorn make them much more interesting, in my opinion.

I agree that it would be great to have elves back as a playable race and, yes, looking better than they do in DA2 (Poor Zevran indeed!).  I prefer to play human mages, but for those that love their Tabrises and Mahariels, I hope that the option of an elven protagonist returns.  Also, jmd4, you make a good point.  What about the enslaved elves of Denerim?  I suspect their story will never be resolved.

I agree. I think the elves look atrocious in DA2.

But then again, so does everything else in the game.

But that's the thing. They *are*, or better to say, *were* Tolkienish godlings. In days of Arlathan, if one's to believe their myths, elves were immortal, ubermagical godlings. It can be said that DA elves are in fact Tolkien's elves transported millennium or two into the future, in a world ruled by humans (and without those immortality islands to retreat to). I don't really see any difference.

Now qunari, that is a fantastically realised original race that just begs for further development and screentime.

I personally believe that DA elves are just a leftover from the old "Baldur's Gate 3" days they were going for once upon time. Had they started the franchise last year, I think that the elves (in this incarnation at least) would be gone in a heartbeat.

Agreed.  As someone who loves playing elves I'd like to see the dangling thread of this storyline picked back up.  I'd like to play as a CE again--particularly as my Warden--and hopefully recover Tabris' friends and family, or at least find out what became of them in Tevinter.  Image IPB

There are so many subplots in all the origins that deserve resolution...  And you're absolutely right, what they did to Zev in DA2 is a travesty.  He was easily one of the best looking elves in Thedas in DA:O. Image IPB

You make a good point about the DA elves.  They were definitely once those immortal LoTR-ish elves, and some of them certainly seem to want to reclaim that.  I'm not sure I explained myself very well in the first post.  I guess that what I like about the elves in this franchise is that they are now distanced from that, in particular the city elves.  Unlike the Dalish who can still in some ways hearken back to that time, the city elves have become a sort of new breed of elf, not human of course, but not like the elves of old either.  Their commonness in comparison to the way elves are usually depicted in books and video games makes them more appealing, I think, and a refreshing change.  I suppose that there is a chance that at some point, with enough time and distance from humans I guess, the elves, city and Dalish, could return to the way they once were, but I think that they are more engaging this way and able to be related to a little more easily.  Basically, I like the elves and think they have more stories that could be told about them.

Also, I agree that the qunari are interesting.  It would be nice in some later game to see them again, particularly the Warden's old companion, Sten.  Surely he is having many interesting adventures these days.

Humbled? Maybe the servants of a rich merchant leaving outside of the denerim alienage?.. since the warden put a foot in Denerim alienage a bunch of elves were robing a man.. why so humble of them!<_<

Dwarves are darkspawn fodder.

Humanity is superior. I mean, when an elf and a human mate, a human is born. Clearly, those human genes are just naturally dominant and will overcome the deleterious effects of the elvish ancestry with time and breeding.

I usually like the idea of elves in most settings, but sometimes the concept is just too rehashed to be effective. You can make a good hash out of corned beef from the night before but you can't make anything good out of corned beef hash except...more corned beef hash, and leftover leftovers at that.

DA 2 elves felt like leftover, remade leftovers to me. They had some fun twists in DA:O, but the new art direction and lack of depth of purpose just made them all stale to me.

Some of the Elder Scrolls elves annoy me at times, but sometimes they are nice in how they are presented too. It might be hash, going back to Tolkien and pre-Tolkien Nordic/Cetic concepts but that's fine. Sometimes they put interesting spins on the basic concepts too. It was nice in Skyrim how Bethesda went back to the unique look of elves from Morrowind, alien but appealing.
