I'm playing through these games again in order to get an ideal save ready for Mass Effect 3, but I want to romance Garrus while avoiding romance with the other characters. This guide helped me immeasurably when playing the first game (http://social.biowar...4/index/2970780), and let me nip all of the potential romances in the bud.  Is there a guide like that for Mass Effect 2?  I mean, you can avoid romance with Kelly by telling her to keep things professional, but any tips for dodging Jacob and Thane while still being friendly?

I don't know of a guide, but I'll just suggest what I did, since the first time I messed up in romancing Garrus and made sure I did romance him the second time.

For Jacob, either in the first or second convo pick 'You say the word and I'll back off.' There was no flirting options in our convos afterwards, I believe.

For Thane, this one will have a really obvious option if you do want to romance him... so, just avoid that one.

PS. come on to Garrus strong when you get the chance. ;)

I'm not seeing that.  This is frustrating and I can only hope that Mass Effect 3 will implement the obvious flirt choices that Dragon Age 2 had.  Can you, or anybody else, be a bit more specific on the dialogue in question?

I've noticed that, in the second conversation, some dialogue trees end with Shepard commenting on how she is making Jacob nervous.  I'm pretty sure that's in the romance path.  However, when I select nothing but top-right dialogue - including the one that comments on his physical shape -Shepard doesn't say that and Jacob just says that he should get back to his duties.  Am I avoiding it right?

'You say the word and I back off' should be in the 'Renegade' (bottom-left) part of the DW. I think that comes right after the bunch of options about making him nervous. (I just did this convo recently, I hate that she gets flirty with him... it's not my Shepard at all.)

Also, about Jacobs physique, I was kinda forced to comment one way or another, so it's definitely not the romance path. The option to finally go down the romance path with Jacob will become more obvious. I've seen it in videos, but in my current game, I've been renegade or platonic enough that it hasn't opened up for me. In fact he won't have a chat with me even after his loyalty mission. Haha.

Yeah... I tried to find a video of locking yourself out of Jacob's romance but there's too many Jacob romance videos out there. I can't believe how many dialogue trees there are with this guy!

If you accidentally lock in, you can also go back to Jacob and talk to him to break it off. Againt here's too many damn videos for this...

The dialogue option you mentioned is at the beginning of the third conversation.  After that, there are a few very blatant flirting lines.  If I avoid them, he makes no mention of the relationship.  If I selected one of them, however, he asks me if I'm interested in him and I can either say "yes" or say that we should just be friends.  Which is the better option to end it now?  Ignoring the flirting lines altogether, or flirting once and then telling him no?

Ignoring it fits better with my character, as she wouldn't flirt with him in the first place, but I don't want it to accidentally start up again later.

I think ignoring them now closes flirting options (or some). It did for me. There are apparently a LOT of possible dialogue branches with Jacob, which is... annoying, that effort could have gone into a more interesting character?

Things are going well so far. Just did Horizon. A bit irked by a conversation with Kelly, though. Despite the fact that I didn't romance Kaidan, she asks me if I have strong feelings for him. If I say yes, the dialogue seems to imply that it was romantic, and if I tell the truth and say that we weren't, I get renegade points.

Nothing wrong with some renegade points in exchange for the truth. Two points is pretty insignificant when you can get a few hundred max on a full playthrough.
