I know about games with restrictions to classes based on gender. I also know others allow it no matter what.

I did it in Fable 3 just to look at the princess's ass. I'm honest about my intents, I wouldn't play a female character unless otherwise, or it turns out that the Female is better at <insert class/attacks>.

I don't know why some people give a damn about what other people do with their Shepards.

I play as both as it gives a degree of variety to my playthroughs. For me it is no different from changing classes and paragon/Renegade characters. I'd get bored of the voice acting and lack of other voice sets if I played two male or two female Sheps in a row, so I alternate.

But then sadly I am an old (well mid-30s), commie (I read the Guardian which makes me clearly a bolshevik), (won't comment about pinko since I've no idea what that means although it sounds potentially homophobic), feminist (hung out with feminists as an undergrad many years ago).

I mostly play Maleshep, mainly because I can relate better to playing a male protagonist that makes weighted choices, which is supposed to be an extension of myself.

I do play Femshep, Jennifer Hale's voice acting seems far more natural to the character and let's be honest, I much prefer looking at the back of Femshep rather than Maleshep for 40+ hours.

I don't, but sometimes when I watch vids of Shepard, I can't stand Hales voice acting at all.

The "well I'd rather stare at a woman's ass" excuse makes me die a bit inside.

I play female characters in games because ... well just because I can. If
it allows it, I normally end up with an equal number of M/F
playthroughs in a game, take ME2 where I've got 4 Femshep and 4 Dudeshep
playthroughs.

That's very considerate/respectful of you, but if I'm perfectly honest, I can't say that the occasional glance at ManShep's ass isn't a plus for me. That soldier getup looks real good on that bod of his. It kinda makes me want to sing this song.

But I still totally respect him as a character. The two are not mutually exclusive, you know. ;)

Personally I like playing as female shepard because of:

a) better actor

I find Mark Meer to be a better Shepard than Jennifer Hale.

I found the opposite in the past. Jennifer Hale is a veteran voice actor; Mark Meer is more used to the stage. Over time I changed my mind somewhat--not to the opposite, but to a state of equilibrium.

In the end, I think it's more due to how an individual sees the character which determines their opinion on the actors than anything else, and that the actors' performance differences are an advantage--the character has more depth due to their individual interpretations of who Shepard is. Meer's Shepard is more subtle, less gradient; Hale's Shepard is more intense and moody. Neither is invalid, just different takes on the same personality.

That said, I hope the direction is a bit more consistent for both this time around. I thought ManShep's little moments (not the big speeches, more the Colonist background quest and such) were sometimes too flat in ME1, and that some moments for FemShep in ME2 were over the top/dodgy... (every conversation with Jacob, for instance. Though to be fair, the director couldn't help the writing...)

I play as both, don't see what's so weird about it.

Because
it helps immersion to play a character of your own gender. It's also
why a lot of people try to model the characters after themselves, to
further help immersion.

Yes, I do that myself on my first playthrough. However, that doesn't mean that playing the opposite sex is necessarily weird. Some people don't like having a playthrough modeled after themselves; they stick to the concept of roleplaying from the beginning, and thus their Shepards are all characters to them rather than self-inserts.

Eventually, when you've tread the same path over and over, you get more out of seeing another side to the same story. That's why people like roleplaying; that's why people change classes or switch between attitudes or romances. It gives a fresh perspective on the story to see it through different eyes. The self-insert isn't a bad thing, but if you like the games enough to play them more than once, making that character over and over again will probably bore you at some point.

I'll never be sorry I've played the game as both genders. Far from it. The ME universe feels richer to me for having done so.

This question again <_<

I write a lot, so getting into the heads of both genders is easy for me.  All my character names come from stuff I've written, sometimes I play the game as the character I created in the story would.

Plus if a game allows you to play both genders why wouldn't you.  Do people actually make all their characters in their image and play the game as they would?  That would get old to me after a couple playthroughs.

But honestly I don't see why people care so much.  I think the question says more about the person asking it than anything honestly.

I play both. I find both fun for different reasons. I played MShep first. I like that there's different content (like romances) that only one gender can experience, it makes it more fun to switch up.

Well if you play only one, you're missing out on half the game - well a quarter if you take paragon/renegade into account, and not counting classes and so on...

Can't stand Hale's voice. It's so... put on. It's so forced. Meer isn't great either but at least he's moderate and doesn't overact every single line.

Other than that, as a male I struggle to put myself in the shoes of a female protagonist.

That's not true, the game doesn't change that much. 90% of all my playthroughs are the same (regardless of BroShep/FemShep, Paragon/Renegade etc). Its just the remaining 10% is worth exploring via changing.

Yes you're right, in general the game is the same, and by half I was exaggerating for effect. ;)
I should have been more specific and said dialogue, and there being effectively 4 extremes for the main character related to dialogue - male/female, para/rene.

Im not going to go into to much depth.  But im male and I play femshep.

My first ever play on ME1 was with maleshep and I enjoyed it.   I did a second play with femshep and the difference was staggering.  Jen Hale's performance was amazing and the whole concept of femshep was such a refreshing change.   Im bored of stoic male action hero's that have been cloned a thousand times.    Female Shepard was something else entirely!

I tryed to play with femshep... but just didnt seem Right. i mean: During most of the game i could sense thatthose different reactions where something nice. New interactions and beeing a sensitive but powerfull women, but when it gets to romance and sex jokes i just cant believe in it.

Plus... Jack's history arc with my Male shepard was way more cool: You're crazy? Wow1 Im crazy too! Lets be prates together and avenge Cerberus wich we are currently wornking with just to **** them uplater!

I'm male and I play as both male and female. I can relate more to a male Shepard but Female Shepard's voice acting is simply amazing, Jennifer Hale is the reason I play a Female Shepard as she adds so much more depth to the character and for me she makes for the better Renegade playthrough

IMO, Hale has an awful voice as Shep. Did something get stuck in FemShep's throat? Was it a long tube? Maybe that'll explain Shep's long neck. She's better paragon then renegade anyway since she seems to drag one word forever per setence when she speaks in that renegade voice.

This. Just this.

Yes I ogle my dude Shep occassionaly. I still think he's awesome and kickass and a great character. Me perving on him is just a gesture of affection. :P
