I am a man I think like a man so if Mass Effect is about how you would act then playing as a male makes more sense for me. I have played as both male and female. Both actors do a great job. I honestly cannot see how one voices Shepard better then the other. They are just different, as it should be. I played four times as a man and twice as a woman. I choose male more because I am a man.

Whatever your opinion of gender there is no way I can see how one voice actor is better. They each see Shepard in their own way and the voice acting reflects that. The reason that anyone likes one over the other has to do with how YOU view Shepard as a character and personality.

one male friend told me he like to play as females - because if he has to stare at someone's ass he might as well enjoy it :)

i stick to girls (my own gender) because i get bored playing guys, and don't finish the PT. i cannot connect with the character.
any game where i cannot choose who i play i get bored of sooner.

Male and playing FemShep and other female characters (if i have a choice) cause they're nice to look at and i like strong female character roles.

No problems with playing males though.

I'm a male and I prefer playing male Shep. I like the idea of creating a strong black male leader figure that the US media seems afraid of. Ironic that a black man could possibly save the galaxy from destruction. I like Meer as the renegade Shep because I actually find a lot of humor in the way he reads the lines. I've also played as fem Shep and I like the way Hale delivers her lines. It seems so natural and emotional. But I do enjoy playing as a male the most because I connect more with the character.

Male. Mostly femshep, my canon is anyway. I have two maleSheps and six femsheps (one for each class).

I don't typically play "me" in a game. Coming from a D&D background, part of the fun of the game is in creating the character. As a guy, playing a female allows a certain discontent that makes creating the character a bit easier for a first playthrough.

Females have been forced to play as male protagonists, for the most part, for decades. Does that make us weird? >.>

If a male watches a movie or reads a book with a female protagonist does that make that "weird and unnatural"? I fail to see the logic in this opinion.

couldnt agree more.

i dont dig the whole "dont play fem or male JUST because of the VA."   run Mark's voice through a computer program to fem it up and slap it on FemShep...i will still prefer to play FemShep (9 out of 10 times).  Slap Jennifer's voice through the same program and put that voice on Sheploo....and i will still prefer to play FemShep.  VA has nothing to do with my decision as to whether i will play a male character or a female character...female will always win out.
When i play a game...rpg (pen and paper or videogame)...or anyother genre for that matter....i dont want to imagine myself participating....but me being someone else that is participating....so the best way for me to feel "involved" is to be someone as far from myself as possible (physically anyways).  Thats why when it is time to play MP in ME3... im gonna be rocking it as a Asari!!  I hope, if the MP portion proves successful, Bioware does a spinoff that allows us to immerse ourselves with the other species...maybe a ME:Mercenaries type game.

im 34y/o. Male..former United States Marine (0351)...and im proud to say that when it comes to videogames...im a Mangina!

I only play as Male Shep. I tried to play as FemShep, and things got too weird, and uncomfortable for me.

I mostly play femShep, because I prefer playing as a woman, even though I never play 'as myself', but I also have a few maleSheps. I don't think you get the full experience if you only play one.

When playing RPGs I typically enjoy playing as female characters, but I do play half/half. My heart goes out for bad a-- females for some reason (Samus FTW -- disregarding Other M).

However, for games like Mass Effect my first play through is always male...though Skryim was female.

Male. I almost always play as a female in any RPG if given the chance. Not sure why.

Well said, it's all about who you connect with more.

*EDIT* I'm a male and I play as femShep.

So you dislike your own gender by stereotyping it? Good to know.

I don't play FemShep because there isn't enough facial/body customization to leave me satisfied with playing her as my own character.

Not enough boob sliders? cause you can't edit the bodies anyway and you can find some really awesome femshep faces on masseffect2faces.com

EDIT: OT, I prefer to play a female character, but I have my manshep saves ready and waiting for ME3.

I play both genders simply because I don't immerse myself as my in-game characters. I'm an aspiring writer so when it comes to character development I always try to do something different and unusual while trying to fit in with the context of the storyline to make it believable (in the in-game world at least).

My canon-Shepard is female simply because she is the very first Shepard I made and I kind of just stuck with her as the 'canon' character. Although...I do have more male than female characters as with most games (male characters usually fit in better and are more believable for me in MOST game worlds, sorry to say, with the exception of Dragon Age which seems to be more matriarchy-oriented. Then again being male and used to TV shows and movies with male protagonists it's also that historical tradition-and programming.).

It also depends on the romance options too. Being of s/s orientation IRL I generally prefer to create gay/bisexual male characters (or at the very least, attractive male characters. Yeah I'm 'look-ist' like that). Considering Mass Effect had no s/s options for men, the next best thing was to create a heterosexual female character (which I have no problem with). I do create heterosexual male characters but not usually as my canon or 'mains', if anything just to explore different romance avenues and to make interesting imports. And potential catfights between NPCs >:-)

Also love Hale's voice for Fem Shep. Has a very Ellen Ripley feel to it. Mark Meer does good with his performance but having my (mostly latino/ethnic) Male Sheps sound like a generic white American/Canadian guy is a little weird for me.

I was reading in the Starwars vs ME forum that some guys think playing as femshep is wierd and unnatural.

Why is this?

Personally I like playing as female shepard because of:

a) better actor
B) more interesting context having a female hero
c) I like seeing blindness to sexism in a game (mostly femshep is treated like maleshep - refreshing)
d) I prefer to play as a slightly more sensitive looking character then some mug alpha male who I would feel intimidated by if I met in real life.
e) I wanna be friends with femshep in real life, cos she seems nicer then stupid angry male shepard
f) I get that ellen ripley vibe.

Pretty much I feel the same.

As a male I've played as a male Shepard 3 times in both games and I've played female Shepard close to 20 times in both games. I perfer Hale's voice over Meer's voice.

Never played as female character. At least in those games where they told you who your PC is.

I usually play as a female in almost any RPG. I like the idea of a seemingly fragile character outsmarting the enemies.
