i play female characters mostly because they have better speech options.
In fallout new vegas alone if you have black widow and cerech le femme you can get the platinum chip from benny without even firing a weapon.
also if mark meer just spoke normally instead of speaking like a braindead rock i'd play a broshep more often

My male to female ratio is 5:2.
Males: Adept, Vanguard, Infiltrator, Soldier, Sentinel
Females: Infiltrator, Engineer
I use the male ones when I want to play as "me." The females, I see them as the actual character, Shepard. So I play as femshep, like I would play halo as Master Chief.

I play femshep, mostly cuz I prefer to look at a chick's back side instead of a dude's backside.

I play both and always have in any game where theres a choice. It's cool to find all the subtle little differences between the two genders like different NPC reactions or conversations and stuff.

*snicker* This, and...
-I prefer Hale's voice acting.
-I can not, for the life of me, make a good-looking dude. Doesn't help that I prefer men with softer, more feminine features and all I can get out of the character creator is "RAWRMANLY" or "drowned in the shallow end of the gene pool" ugly.
I can't say that I prefer the romance options for females, though.

As a woman I play manShep only....reasons:
1. I much prefer manSheps VA....I just don't gel with the femShep VA, too abrupt for me...in fact I find manSheps voice quite sexy.
2. My custom Shep is my eyecandy...preferring to watch his face/his masculine body in action over the female face and form.
3. I like the idea of the strong, fearless, 'go get em' man....kinda find myself crushing on my manShep.

I recently got a look at ME3 hair customization as that was one thing that really turned me off about trying to use a FemShep. I still wasn't that impressed, but I think I might just give her a go.

As a guy, I play femshep for two main reasons: First, because I think she's got a better voice-actor than maleshep; and second, the novelty of getting to play a female hero, for which outside of Bioware games there are staggeringly few options, though it has gotten a little better in recent years.

I play both. Male Shep because I am a male. And Femshep because Jenn Hale makes her sound roughly 100 times as badass as Mark Meer over has.

I play both. Usually some trial and error with the female playthroughs until I get the character just right. Then one male character that's "me", and one that's not. Also, usually two versions of the female as well. (this is in regards to all games that offer both genders, not just ME)

lots of male gamers have played with a female Lara croft in Tomb raider
The majority of players of Nintendo's Mario games are not Italian plumbers in real life.
Hardly anyone who plays a sonic game is a blue hedgehog
Conclusion: the "guys" mentioned in the original post are weird in that they are unable to distinguish between themselves and a game character- they may need psychiatric treatment
