as a straight male im really interested to see how the jokes will fly when it comes to the same sex romances for both genders because i hope they can top that heat sink crack

The only unique dialogue on that list is Harkin's. Mordin's is the same with either sex. As for Garrus, that's not so much gender-unique as it is LI-unique. MaleShep has the same (or greater) amount of romance dialogue between Jack, Tali, Miranda, and/or Liara.

Reasons why I play as Female Shepard, listed in order of importance:

1. If I'm going to be staring at a digital ass for 30+ hours, I'd rather it be a woman's ass than a mans ass.

2. Male Shepard's voice is dull and lifeless in ME1, which is why I immediately switched and started playing as Female Shepard in the first place. Voice improved in ME2, especially in the DLC (and judging by the ME3 footage, it's even better). Regardless, Female Shepard has a better voice. And if I'm going to listen to someone for 30+ hours at a time, I'd rather the voice be decent.

3. Jennifer Hale. She's hot. Her voice is hot.

4. Being an equal opportunist who thinks there's a lack of female leads in games, I figured playing as a female would even out against the constant male leads I play as to make the experience a bit more unique.

5. Knowing it was a Bioware game, I knew there would be a romance bit in it and rolled the dice to see if my male juvenile needs would be appeased. They were in Liara.

These days, especially with ME2, I play as both just because I have the option to and have Male and Female Shepards ready for import into ME3. Those are largely the reasons why I ran through the game first as a female.

Do people REALLY stare at Shepard's ass while they play?

That reason honestly has got to be the biggest nonsense behind that choice, in my opinion anyway.

I am a guy and prefer playing MShep but I have played both genders extensively. I can relate more to MShep since I'm a guy. I can more easily insert myself into Shepard's shoes.

Well I look at my girl character's chest in cutscenes with Saints Row, no shame about that either.

Oh, I should say, I PLAY Both. But Femshep is my "canon" shepard if that makes sense.

I play as both MaleShep and FemShep, but I prefer the latter. Why?

1. I mainly play as Paragon, and IMO Jennifer Hale does a better job of voice acting that.

2. I totally have a crush on (my) FemShep. She's hot, and a military woman who could kick my ass while still maintaining her femininity is basically my dream girl.

3. I'm a lot like Kaidan in many ways, and I love imagining that he's me in-game falling in love with Shepard and getting lucky with her.

@Collider: Not much else to do in the elevators in ME1

As much as they stare at asses when they go for a walk. It's not like anyone sits drooling with open mouth in front of the screen or whatever. But obviously since you play in third person over the shoulder view you can't help it every now and then. Tbh I always thought the argument some people make 'If I have to stare at an ass for hours it better be a female one' is stupid. .Because you don't do it. I personally don't notice any difference between male and female toon most of the time. Only problem I have with maleShep is that I really don't like Sheploo the model and never managed to make a custom that I liked. Females are not much better, but a bit. If they made a better CC and better looking presets then who knows, my canon Shep may not be female.

I am a woman and I play as both Female and Male Shepard just for variety.

My canon femshep is Paragon and my canon sheploo is paragade. I prefer playing as a female but a slightly renegade sheploo is great fun!

Yes I do but not in a lustful way. lol! I much prefer to stare a woman's ass though.

I was reading in the Starwars vs ME forum that some guys think playing as femshep is wierd and unnatural.

Why is this?

Personally I like playing as female shepard because of:

a) better actor
B) more interesting context having a female hero
c) I like seeing blindness to sexism in a game (mostly femshep is treated like maleshep - refreshing)
d) I prefer to play as a slightly more sensitive looking character then some mug alpha male who I would feel intimidated by if I met in real life.
e) I wanna be friends with femshep in real life, cos she seems nicer then stupid angry male shepard
f) I get that ellen ripley vibe.

a) You subjective opinion
b)Same as above
c)Not really. Remember the point in Garrus' recruiting mission in merc recruit room? Some more like that.
d)Your opinion. Men can be sensitive in their own right
e)No comments
f)Well, what can I say!

Maleshep looks the part physically and I think Meer is a very solid VA who's voice fits the general character at hand.

Femshep makes for a more interesting protagonist, IMO, but I also have a few issues with her. Hale, while a good VA, I feel like she doesn't really "get it" like Meer does. Loose cannon, she gets carried away at times and at others she fails to put anything behind her words. Yes, I'm aware that Meer can sound uninspired at times too, but overall he's much more steady/reliable than she is.

Also, femshep's build is too frail for her role. Some bash on her saying that she looks like she came straight off the runway. It sounds sexist, but it's really not, that is quite frankly her body type as it is and it looks out-of-place. There are plenty of women who look just fine and physically fit weighing in over 5'10/140, that general "athletic" mold would look a lot more appropriate here.

a). Subjective. Plenty of people don't like Hale's more emotional style (I personally think both VA's are very good)
B). Don't know what this means
c). It's not sexism to portray males and female differently. ME2 got lazy
with the FemShep animations like walking and sitting by having them the
same as MaleShep.
d). You wouldn't be intimidated by FemShep? I'd be intimated by Male and FemShep if they were Renegades.
e). Stupid angry male Shepard? Hale is generally more emotional in her VA work and they have the same dialogue...
f). Fair enough

a) So? Its my opinion, can't I state it?
B) Contextually, a female shepard is more interesting. Given that most war heroes in the media are males, a female war hero is just a little bit different and makes the character feel more interesting, because it avoids stereotype.
c) Thats also subjective. What you might not find sexist, I might find it sexist. Anyway, I think pushing a role onto someone because of their gender is unfair. Whats wrong with having more sensetive males and tougher women so they equal out?
d) I play paragon femshep, she seems nice :D
e) Angry refers to tone, Maleshep seems a bit too gruff.
f) :D

I'm comfortable with playing both but my canon is femshep. The first character I make is always my canon. I started with femshep because I've read that the voice acting was better.

I'm female and I prefer playing as ManShep. I'm really fond of Meers' voice acting, he has his flaws but so does Hale. Don't get me wrong though, I think they're both great.

The implication here is that FemShep is anything other than alpha as f*ck. That confuses me.

Agreed, Hale makes her sound like one bad*** alpha female.

Yeah, but cos she's female, I find that refreshing, as opposed to *urgh* because I have enough alpha males in my real life.

I don't know why this topic always comes up again and again. Obviously because every season new boys reach puberty. Funny enough girls don't have these kind of issues.

LOL, that was years and years ago for me, haahahaha.

I just don't get the insecurity of some guys about femshep. She's awesome :D

Of course you are welcome to your opinion. I just felt the way you presented your argument, you were presenting your points as facts (such as "Hale is a better actor", "FemShep is more interesting). My apologies if I misinterpreted.

Also, this is what I meant by the lazy animations.

I agree with that. Bioware should've made more unique models for Shepard and Ashley.  Those two need more muscle.  Especially Shepard, considering she's special forces and would've had more rigorious physical demands.

I'm a male and I only play as a male shepard as I used my likeness and personality for him (I make decisions ingame as I would in real life) but I don't see any problem playing as a femshep (I reckon a badass femshep would be hot)

I'm a male gamer and I play FemShep more simply because I'm a guy in real life so I like to play as females since I'll never be one in real life. Don't get me wrong I still play as MaleShep when I want to role play but the majority of my saves are FemShep and I'm not ashamed of that no matter how many might find that "weird".

If she had a beard, I'd play more of FemShep. Sadly, BioWare are well known for pandering to other fanbases, and forever overlooking the 'Bearded Woman' fanbase *sigh*

I am female, but I enjoy playing as male Shepard more. No idea why. And no, it's not because "I like to stare at his ass."
