I admit - I do, but not in a sexual way, and only when s/he's wearing N7 armour, and only to wonder "why did they put those horrid buttplates there?" I noticed them in the ME2 cutscene where Shepard is admiring the SR-2 with Joker.jreezy wrote...
Not me.
Haven't been able to un-notice them since.

I like to play both. For some reason though, I decided to make my man-Shep a paragon and my fem-Shep a renegade. I think that Hale's voice suits a mean Shepard.
Same here, I did this both in ME1 and ME2. When Manshep goes the renegade path, I just think what an ass, but when femshep does it I think wow she just threatened to shoot me, and no, she is not joking. She WILL shoot me!

Edit: I re-read that and I guess we agree. Renegade Femshep is very scary. That's why I prefer to play her as a Paragon. I like Shepard to be a hero. Renegade Sheploo seems mild in comparison which is why I don't mind playing him with renegade tendencies.

Yeah - because playing as a futuristic space marine in a universe filled with aliens and having a sex-bot AI is totally not weird at all.
Games are an opportunity to involve / experience something outside of what we would normally be exposed or have the opportunity to do in real life.
Its a way of entertaining us in ways that go against what we would only ever normally be able to comprehend. Heck, its even a way of understanding things from a totally different outlook.
Personally this style of commentary is about as intelligent as;
You are captain of *insert local sports team*, you must be a meat head.
You play *insert computer game* you must have no friends, have no social skills and smell bad.
Its just dumb.
Although companies like EA do nothing to break those barriers, dare say they reinforce them, with their god awful marketing practices and general encouragement on style of games.

I was reading in the Starwars vs ME forum that some guys think playing as femshep is wierd and unnatural.
Why is this?
Personally I like playing as female shepard because of:
a) better actormore interesting context having a female hero
c) I like seeing blindness to sexism in a game (mostly femshep is treated like maleshep - refreshing)
d) I prefer to play as a slightly more sensitive looking character then some mug alpha male who I would feel intimidated by if I met in real life.
e) I wanna be friends with femshep in real life, cos she seems nicer then stupid angry male shepard
f) I get that ellen ripley vibe.
a). Subjective. Plenty of people don't like Hale's more emotional style (I personally think both VA's are very good)
Bull****. You think that just anyone can win oscar awards for acting? You don't think that acting school has logical and time tested rating systems in place? You wouldn't call these things subjective if you had a better than low level understanding of what makes good actors good.

So you're telling me it's not subjective whether a person thinks Meer or Hale is a better VA for Mass Effect?

I've been playing female characters in video games when given the choice for as long as I can remember. I used to tell people it's because I'd rather look at a female's butt than a male's, but that was just a cover because I wasn't able to figure out why.
Anyway, it boils down to it is far easier for me to look at females in general. .

I can't really describe why I play female characters. I mean, I could give a number of reasons why, but they'd just be an attempt in trying to hide the truth. I could say it's because Jennifer Hale voices the character, but even if she wasn't the voice for femshep, I'd still choose to play her above maleshep.

So becoming a female and looking at yourself all day would be..appealing to you?

The implication here is that FemShep is anything other than alpha as f*ck. That confuses me.
Agreed, Hale makes her sound like one bad*** alpha female.
Also agree! I can't imagine anyone else as Femsheps voice.
Id love to hear Claudia Black give it a shot that woman's voice is Sex and she ruled as Morriagan

I don't know why this topic always comes up again and again. Obviously because every season new boys reach puberty. Funny enough girls don't have these kind of issues.
Anyway, people have no problem to play as a robot, or hedgehog, alien, etc., but female characters? Oh no the outrage! So there is not much common sense necessary to figure that one out. People need to grow up. But obviously playing video games doesn't help much with that.
Get off your feminist high-horse. The topic was about people playing as a different gender than they actually are; it had nothing to do with female characters being inferior or whatever perceived insult you took from it. Most of the people on here (myself included) play as both. The main reason I personally prefer male Shepard is because I'm male.
In a roleplaying game you are meant to feel as if you're the one performing all those courageous feats, and it's a bit hard for me to feel that if I'm playing as a female, because I'm not one. No other reason.

In this specific instance, I always play male first, even if there's an equal number of male and female runs at the end of it. I'm male in real life, and I relate better to male characters.

How clever. You know what else, my self-righteous mate?
Oscar awards are voted on. People with subjective opinions on what makes actors good decide on who the best actor is. You'd know that if you had a better than low level understanding of how the world works.

No but seriously, the first time I saw mass effect was from a playthrough on YouTube. I got used to the character. Playing as manshep seems.... strange to me - like it's non-cannon. Plus, it's nice to play as a female game character who hast been hypersexualized to hell and back. Afaik this game and mirrors edge are the only games in recent history to do this.
