ME1 is decent, but in ME2 female Shepard tries too hard to sound badass or sexy. The conversations with Jacob is an example of the latter, even if you're not actually intending to romance him.

Probably the fault of the writers. I stopped talking to Jacob after the loyalty mission because, a conversation or two later, all the options in the dialogue tree seemed at least a little bit flirtatious, and I thought I was going to end up getting ninjamanced. I was saving myself for Garrus, so I actually reloaded my game at that point.

Writer and voice director, I'm sure.
The whole premise with Jacob being the "sexy" casual romance with female Shepard was ill advised, and the voice direction just made it worse.

I'm a girl and I play as both. My canon Shep is male though. I prefer Mark Veer's voice acting over Jennifer Hale's.

As it is there aren't a lot of games that let you choose your gender or feature a female protagonist so I have no issues playing a guy. Even if its an RPG. Not like I have another option most of the time anyway.

I don't understand why anyone would have a problem playing as the opposite sex. Its just a game.

Uh-oh.  Two Kirrahes.

This might force me to go back to Wrex with a monocle.

You should do that; I like Wrex with a monocle.

I played FemShep first because I wanted the protagonist to be someone I could relate to (and because of Kaidan, hahhhh). But my next playthrough was with M!Shep, who romanced Ash (who's also one of my favorite LIs). I do agree that Hale has more emotional acting and that fits perfectly with my canon Paragon FemShep. I like Meer's voice for my renegade M!Shep, though.

I prefer FemShep, but I like both and play as both.

I was reading in the Starwars vs ME forum that some guys think playing as femshep is wierd and unnatural.

Why is this?

Personally I like playing as female shepard because of:

a) better actor
B) more interesting context having a female hero
c) I like seeing blindness to sexism in a game (mostly femshep is treated like maleshep - refreshing)
d) I prefer to play as a slightly more sensitive looking character then some mug alpha male who I would feel intimidated by if I met in real life.
e) I wanna be friends with femshep in real life, cos she seems nicer then stupid angry male shepard
f) I get that ellen ripley vibe.

Oh, I should say, I PLAY Both. But Femshep is my "canon" shepard if that makes sense.

I play both. I started with maleshep but my very next PT as femshep so I really don't have a  preference and both voice actors do excellent jobs voicing the protagonist (Meer does several other voices in the game too) so neither is really better than the other and they're both friends which is AWESOME!Image IPB

I play Femshep and I'm a guy. Hell Femshep is probably the biggest reason I actually finished Mass Effect 1 and 2 in the first place. Jennifer Hale's performance was just so much better than Mark Meer's in my opinion.

I used to play as both female Shepard and male Shepard but ever since I experienced the latent hostility and hatefulness of a certain subsection of Jennifer Hale fans, I find that I can't stand to listen to her voice anymore (in anything). So I am a female player that exclusively plays a male Shepard.

I've found that I tend to play maleshep as the default sheploo. Rarely do I sway from that. But I tend to play more femshep and spend more time customizing her appearance depending on the class.

Prefer femshep for the dialogue acting as well.

Always split the Shepards 50/50 in terms of Shepard's gender. Funny thing though, the femSheps are based off of people I had crushes on.

I'm a male gamer and I enjoy manshep and femshep equally, I like manshep because I can easily put myself in his shoes, and I like femshep becuase its good get away from the typical male hero, also both Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale are great VA's

I mainly play Maleshep. In a non-first person video game I always find playing as a female character oddly voyeuristic.

I would suggest everyone here to grow a pair and stop whining about how playing as a "female" or "male" gives them funny feelings and the stupid justifications you give (lol! dur! I like staring at her ass!). Are people this insecure?

You know why I play FemShep? So I can create Barbie Shepard. No hidden agenda...

Playing as FemShep or ManShep merely changes the model & voice actor
You do not have a sudden urge to bear children because you are playing a chick

I'm male, I play as both. I thought Jennifer Hale did a better job in the first one, but Mark Meer did a better job in the second one, overall that is. There are some parts I think female Shepard did better in the second one

I'm male and play as both genders in-game. The end.

I'm female and started with ManShep. Then I tried FemShep and I enjoyed it more... dunno why, 'cause both playthroughs were almost similar.
However, I don't see why a guy playing FemShep should come up with an explanation. Same way I don't read too much into my playing with ManShep. I mean, both options are there, why not giving both a try?

And you value the opinion of random people on the Internet above common sense?

Also, the obligatory "oh great, it's this thread again".

a) I prefer Keanu Reeves type actors so I'm going to say Mark Meer is the better voice actor
B) Stereo types are usually based on a truth, strong female characters are unbelieveable because there are so few strong women in RL however Aliens is proof that it can be done well in movies.
c) Men and women are different biologically.... brain chemistry is different, rights should/are equall however men and women aren't the same.
d) okay... well I'm not sure why men should be more sensitive, do we really want our species to become easily intimidated?
e) Really don't know if your trolling me hereImage IPB
f) THIS is practically the only thing we agree onImage IPB, the problem is when they try to pull off butch with a stick model femShep.... the butch women (I work in the minning industry) I know and work with aren't physically attractive, mentally they are though because they would make great mothers. (the whole "if your ugly pick up a book and if your fat buy a computer" quote comes to mind.

FemShep isn't ugly enough to be butch and believeable,  made me laugh when the "my little pony" type guy posted on this thread too.  I respect people that are honest and speak their mind, the less politically correct the better.

The first vibe I get when a male plays a female character especially when there are romance options, is that this guy never played contact sports growing up, always got his big athletic friend to "save" him at school, secretly wishes he was a women, scared of other adult men and/or never been in a fight.

Your impression is most likely going to be that I'm immature and a d!ck or something like that, maybe I am however that doesn't necessarily make me wrong though.  It isn't my intent to make anyone feel bad however in RL i'm very blunt when I talk with people so I'm not changing that online.

PS. I will note that some people do play as a female character only for the experiance itself, however few that may be.

Happy dethawing. Have you enjoyed your cryocamera? I regret to inform you that the morals of 2012 are quite different than those of 1952; however, I'm sure that with enough effort and self-control, you will adjust to the zeitgeist of the modern society.
