Play as both, yes. Though my main is my male soldier (I prefer the voice actor, though not by much, and find it more fitting for a male to be the brute type over my female infiltrator) my female Shepard feels just as important, in fact I'm starting a new female shepard engineer, if only I can get myself to play more then five minutes...

So no, I don't understand the reaction about it being 'weird' to play the other gender...someone feeling insecure in themselves? Peer pressure?

Actually I'd always go for female character if there was a choice in the first place. Simply because9 out of 10 games would force you to play the heroic male saving the empire/the world/ the company/ the universe. Girl kicking asses looks pretty great though

Does anyone remember the days when fans of a game could talk to each other and enthuse about it without immediately resorting to nasty attitudes and behaviors? I mean, come on lads and lasses. Smile on your brother/sister in arms. We're all here because we like Mass Effect, right? Isn't that enough of a hook to get us together and try to love one another? Right now?

OP why you trying to just start some S$%#? Both VA's are good. Play whatever you want. If you like FemShep then play FemShep. If you like MShep play MShep. But don't come on the forums trying to start some drama.

I'm a dude and have an even number of imports with both genders, but I prefer playing as FemShep for one very simple reason:

If you give me a character creator, I'mma gonna use it.

I'm straight, and as such, I'm not all that good a judge of male beauty, so when I get to the creation screen for a MaleShep, I don't really care. Don't get me wrong, I know when I've created a human being and when I've created a swamp monster, but usually my creation consists of picking a preset, changing the hair and away I go.

But with a FemShep? Combat's all well and good, but creating a beautiful FemShep is a challenge in and of itself. Every slider moved back and forth with the utmost care, all angles scrutinized, cheekbone sharpness and nose length pored over. It's not all just about gender politics or VA preference. Sometimes it's just satisfaction in craftsmanship and a job well done.

Seriously, am I the only person in here who breathes a sigh of relief after the ME1 intro when Shepard talks to Pressly because the FemShep you just spent an ungodly amount of time on passes the Bright Light Test?

The "well I'd rather stare at a woman's ass" excuse makes me die a bit inside.

I play female characters in games because ... well just because I can. If it allows it, I normally end up with an equal number of M/F playthroughs in a game, take ME2 where I've got 4 Femshep and 4 Dudeshep playthroughs.

lol I know what you mean.  I hated it when I finaly got through the intro only to realize my female Shepard looked all out of proportion and wrong.  Making a good femshep takes time and patience but it is worth the effort in the end.

I think it says more about the person that thinks it's weird than the person playing the game really (staring at behinds not withstanding). I don't see it as any different than an author writing a character of the other gender.

Personally, I like to have at least one character of each gender, and usually of each race, where applicable.

You gotta be kidding me, that's a state of mind, a mother for instance would most likely face death to protect her young, but there are worse things than facing death, ask the SOE

Women were also used as secret agents. They were members of SOE (Special
Operations Executive) and were usually parachuted into occupied France or landed
in special Lysander planes. Their work was exceptionally dangerous as just one
slip could lead to capture, torture and death. Their work was to find out all
that they could to support the Allies for the planned landings in Normandy in
June 1944. The most famous female SOE members were Violette Szabo and Odette
Churchill. Both were awarded the George Cross for the work they did - the George
Cross is the highest bravery award that a civilian can get. Both were captured
and tortured. Violette Szabo was murdered by the Gestapo while Odette Churchill
survived the war.

Thank for going to the trouble of porviding links, I didn't say there are no strong women and I even said that all men aren't strong either.  I will take back my statement:

B) Stereo types are usually based on a truth, strong female characters are unbelieveable because there are so few strong women in RL however Aliens is proof that it can be done well in movies
and instead say:

B) I don't find the context of a female "hero" more interesting than a male "hero",  with my ego as a young athletic male full of pride in my abilities, I wouldn't allow myself to be physically weaker than a female and I don't enjoy the idea of playing a women.

The first vibe I get when a male plays a female character especially when there are romance options, is that this guy never played contact sports growing up, always got his big athletic friend to "save" him at school, secretly wishes he was a women, scared of other adult men and/or never been in a fight.be.

I secretly wish I was a woman because I play as femshep? How did you know?! Get out of my head!!!

I have equal amounts.

Male Shepards are
Paragon/Soldier - Spacer - LI's : (multiple Playthroughs) Liara, Ashley, Miranda, Tali
Renegade/Sentinel - Earthborn LI - Jack
Paragade/Adept - Sole Survivor LI's - Liara, Ashley

Female Shepards are
Renegade/ Infiltrator -Sole Survivor - LI: Kaiden
Paragon/ Vangaurd - Spacer - LI: Thane
Paragade/ Engineer - Earthborn - LI: Garrus

I play as both because I can. Sometimes I want to look at a strong female (nothing wrong with that. I find it attractive) sometimes I want to translpant myself into a male Shep.

I like both Mark and Jennifer's portrayal of Shepard. It's that simple.

To hell what anyone else thinks I say. Peer pressure never bothered me in H.S. it sure as hell won't bother me now.

This is very true, but I tire of political correctness. Play as female Shep, great. Play as male Shep, fine. I don't care. But don't come on here acting like anyone who doesn't play as female Shep is an immature male schovenist and that this topic is just more proof that women are just SO oppressed, and blah, blah, blah.........I'm sick to f***ing death of it.

male, try to balance both. but lean towards fem... dont know why... the excuse i give to my friends i prefer to stare at the backside of a female, pixilated or not, compared to the backside of a male. which is true but i really dont see it justifies why i play as femshep

Well, yes.

Though I will admit that I'd rather watch an attractive female toon over a male (but I'm a woman so I can get away with that  )

But the male vs. female posturing can get dumb.

Play the game and make the story that you want....more options are better, IMO.

If I want my galactic hero to be female...well, that's my damn choice...if you want a male, then that's your game and your choice.

My husband and I do this. He always plays female characters in video games when given the choice. He says he'd rather have a character that's nice to look at. ;) I will play either gender for video games, it just depends on what I feel like at the time. For Mass Effect 1, I made a guy randomly. And I just got attached to that character so kept with it.

It's probably a good thing we use opposite gender characters in my house instead of the same. FemShep's voice = Tira Shepard (my husband's) to me. MaleShep's voice = Chris Shepard (mine) to me. When I've tried making other Shepards since, it never feels right.

And some female said the same. Why are you shocked with the woman's asse excuse, and not the man's ass excuse ? That sounds dumb. Either you are an hypocrite, or you didn't read this topic.

Also, this kind of topics always make me laugh. You are all falling into stereostype about the others. And apparently not only those who can't play femshep.

To each its opinion. If a male gamer cannot feel connected to a female PC, that's its opinion, the same for female gamers. If some prefer playing the opposite sex, fine too. Other play both. stop believing you are smarter or more mature than the other according to your choice, that's dumb and immature.

I'm a guy and only play FemShep. The thing is, the first time I played ME1 it was as FemShep, so it is really hard now to play a male Shepard... it just doesn't feel as Shepard for me. I've tried multiple times to play a a male Shepard, but I just can't do it.

Well look at you making assumptions.

Just to clarify, I find the excuse stupid from both the perspectives of males looking at females and females looking at males.

I think you should play a character because you find them interesting or intriguing, not for a little bit of eye candy since you're going to be sticking with this character for X amount of hours. Say for example if playing Miranda was an option and I thought "well I'll play her cos of dat ass", the excuse will start to wear a little thin 20 hours in to the game if I found her completely repulsive as a character. It's why I can't play DA2, I'm sure I could make a pretty looking Femhawke or whatever, but I simply don't like the character itself so I don't want to play it, and I'm not going to force myself through ~30 hours of gameplay just for a bit of eye candy and seeing a character strut whenever she walks.

It's stupid because men that play as female toons tend to appreciate other things beyond staring at a female's ass and vice versa for women who play men.

Just stop judging people for playing the gender they prefer...no problems there.

The good thing is that this game provides you the option to play whichever you prefer and that's great n stuff.

Why fight over which is better or which gender should play which?...madness I say!
