I can get through all the early parts of the mage mission but once I get to the first battle against darkspawn the frame rate is so bad and the sound starts to crackle, it's awful to play.  My Build is better than the min requirements so I don't see what the problem is.  Any ideas what my problem might be?

Build:
AMD X2 4200 Oc'd to 2.38GHz
4 GB DDR2 RAM
ATI X1900XT VGA w/ 512MB
Windows 7 64bit

Oh, I should add, this is the same on any graphic settings. Whether 1280x1024 with max settings or 800x600 with everything on low.

How confident are you in the stability of that overclock? This game makes very heavy use of the CPU (particularly since your CPU is weak) and I've seen more than one instance of overclocked components causing trouble.

His OC on that proc should be fine unless he is using the stock cooler. I was running my 4200 at 2.42 until last weekend when I got my parts for my 720 x3 setup.

Is cool'n'quiet disabled in the bios? Sometimes it can cause performance issues on older pcs. I haven't noticed an issue with it on my new phenom proc though.

Yeah I already tried it without the OC and same problems are there. Cool n quiet is off too. I was reading some other threads and it seems to be this 100% CPU problem that alot of people are having. Has there been any fixes found for this yet?

ALL 2 core systems run at 100% use be it intel or amd and this is NORMAL for the game. I highly doubt there will be a fix for that.

I have a Dell M1730 laptop, but my 2 cores are OCed and run at 3.4Ghz, and I also have 2 Nvidia 8800Ms in SLI mode. I play on max settings and getting 50+ fps

this game has had a LOT of issues with AMD CPUs, and I'm not familiar with your ATI card as I'm an nvidia fan so I dont know how your ATI card compares to 2 nvidia 8800s

I would have to lean towards the video card being the problem. Could be a combination of both your cpu and vid card. I had probably the same cpu, a socket939 AMD x2 4200? Run the cpu at default clocks, and overclock that POS ati board, then when that burns up, you got a good reason to upgrade.

You do have the AMD Dual Core Optimizer installed, right?

I do now. No difference.

The pc isn't top of the line but it's not some clunker either. It definitely meets the min requirements and I can't even run at 800x600 with lowest settings (not that I would anyways).

My GPU (radeon x1900xt 512mb) is more than enough IMO according to the requirements. I've just run out of ideas.

I'm planning on upgrading the CPU to phenom II X4 3.2GHz but that will require new mobo and RAM due to socket AM3 and I'm lacking the funds right now to do this. But I've heard from people with single core athlons running this game so I'm starting to get a little ticked.

you must have some kind of problem, it defo isnt your pc. i have asingle core 3200 amd 64 with an old x800 and i can run the game on min fine with a decent frame rate. Ever think it could be a sound / sound drive problem/ tried setting sound quality to min or somthing

Ok it is definitely a sound problem. I disabled sound and all frame rate problems are eliminated and the game runs smooth as a whistle. I'm trying to roll back sound and try some different drivers.

Thanks guys!

I had severe fram rate probs until I started playin in a window and turning the eye candy down to the lowest settings.  I still get the slows from time to time but noting like playing in full screen.  Also set resolution to 1024 X 768 which on my computer is the sweet spot.

BTW playing in a window does not take anyting away from the game it virtually looks like full screen anyway.  Also noticed that the longer I play the worse the frame rate becomes in about an hour or so which is a memory leak problem that bioware will eventually fix with a patch, I hope.  So I reload the game about every hour or so... its a bit of a hassel but I can live with it.

I'm not computer savvy in any way shape or form, but a friend that had the slowdown issues also showed me how to change Dragon Age's "affinity" to just one of my computer cores and I have had no slowdown problems since then! Maybe you can try that?

Well, that's plain silly for Dragon Age. There were games in the past which had such issues, like NWN2, but his game makes HEAVY use of multiple cores, so I suggest you roll these changes back.

I think your problem is a combination of 3 things, your cpu, your sound card, and mainly your vid card. That thing is ancient, and a power hog. What size psu do you have? Your vid card could be hogging up all the power. It is definately worth investing about $150 on a new vid card. I can suggest 3 right off the bat in the price range (ati 4870 $150-$160, nvidia gtx 260 $150-$180, ati 5770 $150). you can get a ati 4770 for about $100. I also highly suggest a quad core cpu.

I agree with Centra - it says minimum specs are a 1.6Ghz Core 2 Single, which is ridiculous. Recommended minimum specs are a Phenom II x2 processor, which you don't have and are rather well outdated. Also, the graphics card is very old.

I run this game on a Phenom II x4 955 OC'd at a modest 3.6Ghz and is STILL uses 86% of my CPU constantly across all 4 cores. I also run on a Radeon 4870 and it uses about 85% of the GPU constantly. I'm also running at 1920x1080 with all details on high and 4x AA, but just to give you an idea, this game is power hungry.

Yup power hungry as hell, I had to buy a new cpu cooler to keep my cpu from overheating. And the noise created by both cpu and gpu fans are heard across the room.

As for the OP, although your system may be above the minimum requirement, the truth is somewhat misleading since even for my system Athlon 7750 and 9800 GT the game is somewhat hard up in keeping up with the demands of this game.

Although Ive noticed after installing 195.62 the framerate somewhat increased just a little bit since I no longer notice any stuttering of the game, specially in Denerim.

i'm wondering if the sound thing might be my trouble... i should try disabling it.

i didn't bother installing a 3rd party sound device on my pc because i figured it wouldn't make a difference... but i'm wondering if the sound from this game eats up too much processor power without a dedicated audio processing device.

Just wondering why run a 64bit os with only 4gigs of ram

i got 64 bit Vista Ultimate just so I can run 12gigs of Tri-core and up 24gigs on current mobo if needed.

I run on a i920 setup Quad core 4 physical proccessors 8 Logical. 12meg cache. uses 25-29% cpu max..I run at maxx AA and resolution 60fps np only on a geforce 260 to , which is consided midrannge considering you can buy then on ebay for 125$ and 165ish new.. Dorry I have no real answer for you . You O/S vs. your hardware seems a little out a wack for what i consider, I just dont know why you run older hardware on newest high end O/S , That is the only thing i can see. If you switch to XP SP3 32bit i'd bet that help , it uses less resources the a 64 windows 7...Even thout you'll lose a quater gig ram it will reconize 3.25 on average. You gain alot more with out a heft o/s weighng down cpu and ram
