Is cool'n'quiet disabled in the bios? Sometimes it can cause performance issues on older pcs. I haven't noticed an issue with it on my new phenom proc though.

this game has had a LOT of issues with AMD CPUs, and I'm not familiar with your ATI card as I'm an nvidia fan so I dont know how your ATI card compares to 2 nvidia 8800s

The pc isn't top of the line but it's not some clunker either. It definitely meets the min requirements and I can't even run at 800x600 with lowest settings (not that I would anyways).
My GPU (radeon x1900xt 512mb) is more than enough IMO according to the requirements. I've just run out of ideas.
I'm planning on upgrading the CPU to phenom II X4 3.2GHz but that will require new mobo and RAM due to socket AM3 and I'm lacking the funds right now to do this. But I've heard from people with single core athlons running this game so I'm starting to get a little ticked.

I can get through all the early parts of the mage mission but once I get to the first battle against darkspawn the frame rate is so bad and the sound starts to crackle, it's awful to play. My Build is better than the min requirements so I don't see what the problem is. Any ideas what my problem might be?

I had severe fram rate probs until I started playin in a window and turning the eye candy down to the lowest settings. I still get the slows from time to time but noting like playing in full screen. Also set resolution to 1024 X 768 which on my computer is the sweet spot.
BTW playing in a window does not take anyting away from the game it virtually looks like full screen anyway. Also noticed that the longer I play the worse the frame rate becomes in about an hour or so which is a memory leak problem that bioware will eventually fix with a patch, I hope. So I reload the game about every hour or so... its a bit of a hassel but I can live with it.

I'm not computer savvy in any way shape or form, but a friend that had the slowdown issues also showed me how to change Dragon Age's "affinity" to just one of my computer cores and I have had no slowdown problems since then! Maybe you can try that?
Well, that's plain silly for Dragon Age. There were games in the past which had such issues, like NWN2, but his game makes HEAVY use of multiple cores, so I suggest you roll these changes back.

I run this game on a Phenom II x4 955 OC'd at a modest 3.6Ghz and is STILL uses 86% of my CPU constantly across all 4 cores. I also run on a Radeon 4870 and it uses about 85% of the GPU constantly. I'm also running at 1920x1080 with all details on high and 4x AA, but just to give you an idea, this game is power hungry.

As for the OP, although your system may be above the minimum requirement, the truth is somewhat misleading since even for my system Athlon 7750 and 9800 GT the game is somewhat hard up in keeping up with the demands of this game.
Although Ive noticed after installing 195.62 the framerate somewhat increased just a little bit since I no longer notice any stuttering of the game, specially in Denerim.

i didn't bother installing a 3rd party sound device on my pc because i figured it wouldn't make a difference... but i'm wondering if the sound from this game eats up too much processor power without a dedicated audio processing device.

i got 64 bit Vista Ultimate just so I can run 12gigs of Tri-core and up 24gigs on current mobo if needed.
I run on a i920 setup Quad core 4 physical proccessors 8 Logical. 12meg cache. uses 25-29% cpu max..I run at maxx AA and resolution 60fps np only on a geforce 260 to , which is consided midrannge considering you can buy then on ebay for 125$ and 165ish new.. Dorry I have no real answer for you . You O/S vs. your hardware seems a little out a wack for what i consider, I just dont know why you run older hardware on newest high end O/S , That is the only thing i can see. If you switch to XP SP3 32bit i'd bet that help , it uses less resources the a 64 windows 7...Even thout you'll lose a quater gig ram it will reconize 3.25 on average. You gain alot more with out a heft o/s weighng down cpu and ram
