why old school fans are worried? Old school fans **** about literally everything, just look at Final Fantasy, those old school fans who pleasure themselves to images of Cloud and Sephiroth would still chastise Square Enix even if Final Fantasy XV was Final Fantasy VII w/ different character designs and updated graphics. These "old school" fans have entitlement issues and a superiority complex all because they've been fans longer and have this deluded idea they know good game design and story telling all because they've been fans longer.

Nice point. Long term fans don't always have the best answer. Same with SC2, master players like to put down players who are below masters. I often see masters players with terrible balance ideas while gold and platinum guys come up with really interesting tactics and balacne suggestions and the masters guys say they're dumb noobs and tell them to shut up and come back when they're master players. It's just bull****. Even as a fan of Bioware who's been around since KOTOR 1, I'm unconcerned with ME3. All the stuff I've seen looks awesome and Bioware knows what they're doing.

I'm just nervous because all the marketing videos. They are Michael Bay–ed up and looks dumbed down. If the launch trailer isn't different and good I'll be very worried.

Haha!

Yeah for the most part IGN isn't the best source for... well... anything, but they do have a few good reviewers.

You clearly don't understand marketing. They put the big explosions in marketing to draw in new players, thats what ads are for. An ad full of stat screens would do nothing to bring new people in.

I'm not sure if I'd consider myself an old-school fan (Started the series in '08), but the only real worries I have are the amount and quality of content certain characters are going to get. None of my total favorites are in the squad, and that bothers me.

I have faith in the rest of the game though. The gameplay, the more emotional dialogue, the multiplayer, the squad banter, everything else.

Big explosions bring in the people who value big explosions, but there are plenty of people out there who aren't familiar with Mass Effect that might value a stylized/moody/atmospheric trailer more than a "SPLOSIONS!!! BOOMMM!!" trailer...so I'm not saying you're wrong, but everybody doesn't fall into that category; I think it's a valid criticism of the marketing to say that they are not targeting as many people as they could be.

I am a bit worried, even if I know Bioware can not be expected to live up to my highest expectations.
It was worrying that my sole survivor shepard did not mention Akuze or the assassination of Admiral Kahoku and marines once. There where several chances (for example with Miranda and Jacob, with Tali and with Garrus and Liara etc when they voiced their concerns and so on).

If I would have designed the game, I would of course have made choices matter, I would even have had the reapers winning without the help of the Geth, but with various success in surviving and securing the survival genetic and cultural legacy of the galactic community on an hidden "ark-planet" -Ilos style - depending on how coordinated the orgaincs war effort was (all about buying time) and what compromises/choices had been done.

The probem with some of these analysts is that they analyze out of the scope. It is like saying "yeah this computer is good but it can't transport me to another dimension or alternate reality"

Yeah, DA2 needed more in-game big decisions.  With the time jumps, it was a perfect opportunity to see Kirkwall evolve based on your choices.  However, because it was a rush-job, Kirkwall pretty much stays the same (and boring) over the course of 10 years.  That's bad execution.  But the ending of the game being inevitable is not something people can complain about; they need to have a focused general plot for the series.  That's how it has to be.  Mages and Templars at war is a fine direction to take the series.

And yes, Bioware marketed the Mass Effect series as being about big choices that carry across the games, but once again you have to seperate the illusory image that marketing creates and what you are actually getting with the product.  The actual product we are getting is a great story, a great trilogy, told in 3 acts that is character-driven and is flavored by (not dictated by) the choices you make.  If you accept that, you will enjoy ME3 much more than you would if you continue to view the series as something it isn't, even if marketing continues to insist that's what it is.  It's still a great accomplishment to have Wreave running things on Tuchanka if Wrex died, to see the council be more trusting of you if you saved them, to see Shiala or Gianna show up and interact with you in appropriate ways depending on how you treated them.  Decisions still matter for story flavoring, but not for story progression.

The great thing about ME3 is that they don't need to worry about setting up the next game's story for success, because it's the last entry.  That means we can have drastically different endings depending on our choices, and that is cool.

This is exactly how I look at it. Brilliant post.

It's a real double edged sword.

On one hand you tend to have more knowledge of the series and can base an honest opinion and an open suggestion easier and more thoroughly than someone who just jumped onto the series.

On the other hand, if you do it wrong, you end up coming off as a douchey, whiney ******.

It's all about the tone and word play.

Too much nostalgia interferes with comparing and thinking about the two games, IMHO.

I've been with the ME series since January 08.  So that is close to the early days of ME 1 but I have not freaked out about little changes that have been overall improvements for the series.  Not saying that every single thing they changed was better but the vast majority of it has been for the better.

I'm a huge fan of the series, and know as much about it as the oldest and most intelligent 'fan', and I've only been with the series since mid-2010. It's ridiculous to think that simply because you've 'been around longer' you suddenly 'know better'. More often than not, for a number of reasons, you actually know less.

I don't intend to stop unless they come out with another DA2 with 50,000 recycled dungeons.  That would mean that EA truly has consumed their soul and their mantra of "feedback is important" has been snuffed out by corporate bean-counters.

I find it ironic that your only registered game is Dragon Age II.

That is true, nostalgia often skews the perception of long time fans.

It's more ironic that he's stating 50,000 recycled dungeons would be EA's doing when ME1 had 50,000 recycled bases.

What the hell is wrong with you two? You curse out a guy for not liking the direction of the game, when he gives facts about how it has deviated from it's originally stated intentions? We got some immatures d-bags here folks.

Define "railroading"  I see that term thrown around alot on the BSN.  Bioware can't give people unlimited choice.  There still has to be framework to work in.
