After reading this article on Game Informer I'm pretty excited to give this game a try.. I haven't played an XCOM game before but I'm loving the strategy aspect of this.

The demo is good enough- I wish it was a little longer since its mostly tutorial stuff but it gives enough of a feel for the game to sell me on it. Just wish the mouse controls didn't feel as laggy as it did.

Computer related maybe?

Controls were fine on my machine.

So glad I preordered this and the demo made me squee.

I don't know why but compressed Binks have never really ever bothered me. Though I'm definitely not a graphics guru, at least not in the typical sense.

I usually never turn AA on, for instance, and just play at my native resolution (which is 1920x1200). Rarely do I ever find myself noticing the pixels.

I'm considering doing my first ever Lets Play for XCOM though.

Psssh. I'm far too lazy to look THAT far back.

This necromancy is totally acceptable, however....

Chryssalids are in. You will hate them :)

I think this game will not be quite as merciless as the original (which had a bug in it that always reverted the difficulty to beginner. Yes... beginner was THAT freaking hard) on normal difficulty levels. BUT, they devs have stated they want to make sure players find the game very challenging and that getting through without losses is a difficult thing. The lead designer has boldly stated that the hardest difficulty on iron man has never been completed by anyone at his office haha.

I lost a few people on my first demo run. So embarassing.

The only thing the demo did not show me though was the save system. I'm hoping we can have individual saves between missions at least. I don't mind redoing an entire map because I made a careless error, but I'd probably hate an autosave system that gave me no choice in having to accept the loss of a favorite unit.

I don't mind some units permanently dying. That comes with the game. But I can see I'll end up getting attached to a few of them.

The game features a hardcore mode which they highlight prevents saving/loading aside from autosaves.  WHich means they likely have a game mode which does NOT do that :)

I wasn't married to TUs, and I'm not sure about the base thing. One interesting thing is that your base location has an effect, which I think is neat.

I never really bought into the caricature argument, since i always sort of felt that the original was somewhat cartoony in this regard too (that hair!)

When you use the words "thin stick" you're just using hyperbole. This female sniper (quickly loaded up the game) is still pretty darned big. It was more along the lines that the original game used caricatures as well.

The thing I noticed was that until you mentioned it, I hadn't even really noticed.

Yes, each classification of unit does have a unique look to them. Though I'm sure you can imagine that this doesn't just display an aesthetic and actually serves a functional purpose, right?

Hah, I don't consider the 5xxx series to be "old" cards in terms of their capabilities.

I still have a 5850 and there aren't any games that force me to drop down my graphics settings. Though I'm also no longer a graphics junkie which might help.

That's a decent enough way of looking at it, from the combat perspective. You'll maneuver your troops around and try to flank the opponents to do bonus damage/bonus chance to hit, a lot like FFT.

It's not an RPG in that sense. You play a faceless entity that controls the XCOM initiative. Base building as well as giving orders to your soldiers in the field.

BTW this game is absurd fun and I am loving the difficulty (playing classic Ironman)

Two catastrophic mission failures. One where I lost a squad of 5 rookies, and one where I lost 3 vets and had to evacuate BARELY (with a Chryssalid breathing down my neck) with a squaddie and my Captain barely surviving.

HAHA crazy.

classic Ironman? Or Impossible? I haven't run out of money and haven't had much issue shooting down ufos. I have shot down 4 (out of 4), though the large one did take out an interceptor as well.

My issue is I NEED an engineer! I can't build a workshop yet. All these researched goodies but no way to build them :(

So much rage. 3 straight misses at 75%

There's a 1.5% chance of that happening XD

Chryssalids ruined my first terror mission and I barely escaped with my life!

I dropped down a difficulty level. Unfortunately the lets play I was planning is pretty much going to need me to plop down for a new HDD just for storage. Which shouldn't be too expensive. Though I could still show the first part which basically gets the tutorial stuff out of the way.

Wow. This game sounds PUNISHINGLY difficult. Makes me wish I had a gaming rig.

It definitely can be.  You can also save/load your way out of collossal mistakes, which I'm doing for my first game (half a learning experience).

But then you could also enable Ironman which, well, if your whole team gets wiped out better hire some fresh meat because they're not coming back.

Iron man only!!!!!!!!!!!!

And there are so many! Hahaha.

At work I have an ironman classic game that is going pretty well actually. All my attempts after dying the first time at home, however, resulted in lots of cursing the loaded RNG! I sheepishly started an Ironman Normal game mode (wow is it easier. So many more resources from countries and stuff is cheaper, start with 2 satellites, etc. etc.

I think Normal might've been what I was looking for in order to experiment with base management choices. In classic, I get the feeling that even if you're not playing an ironman game, if you make a poor management decision it'll cost you the game just as much as losing a squad of high-level soldiers. In my case, in order to save money, instead of immediately building a satellite at 100 credits, I waited until I got more engineers so the cost would be lowered to 77 credits. That allowed me to build two satellites early on instead of just one, which made a big difference in both lowering panic and increasing income.

I notice the building does give you a rebate if you get engineers while it's under construction.  Ideally you probably want to start building the satellite at 26 days remaining so that you get 20 days to build, and then the 5 days to deploy, ensuring you get the coverage the instant before the end of the month.

My Ironman Normal game is going much better (mutons are rough....)  I actually kind of miss that Sectoids just don't seem to exist now too, especially since their bodies are a useful component!

The memorial actually gave me goosebumps. Sucker for bagpipes I guess :P

[quoet]Do you think that someone that's relatively new to gaming would be able to handle it? Or should I just get her something a little easier to manage? [/quote]

Beginner would be perfect for her I bet. It makes the "Strategic Campaign" a lot easier by giving you way more resources, which is where most of the difficulty is I find. I'd have much less difficulty if my guys all had full plasma gear and awesome gear with huge income and giant science teams... but I don't! :P

Thanks Allan and Ashedman! But now I have a huge problem. I bought it a couple hours ago to see for myself how difficult it was. I was planning on giving it to her if it wasn't, or trading it in if it was. After playing it for an hour I learned something... I love it....and I can't give it up. So that means I have to buy her ANOTHER birthday gift. I hate myself right now...

You can buy two copies >.>

I encourage it <.<

SO... for some reason, I though that XCom was a PC exclusive, but I see its actually out on consoles as well.

Since I am one of those pond scum who only plays games these days on console (I know, the shame... the HORROR!), has anyone played this on 360? And can anyone comment if it is a decent port, or should this have stayed on the PC only?

In talking with some guys that worked on ME, he says that there are definitely some GUI quirks that seem to be a symptom for how UE deals with their scaleform meaning some stuff is surprisingly rigid and difficult to adjust for platform specific reasons.

I have no issues with the control scheme for the game on PC, but I do feel it's clear that there's console support in how the systems work.  The biggest advantage the PC has for the core GUI is that it circumvents some of the rigidity by allowing keyboard shortcuts.

I'd be very surprised if anyone found the game clunky or unintuitive on the console.
