I've been playing it on Impossible Ironman...I spent close to 40 times to actually get a good campaign going!

Finished the Alien Base and captured the commander alive but I sadly lost my best support soldier and a sniper.

Gotta say, I'm a bit tired losing half my HP due to the magical ability of alien guns shooting at me with several walls or vehicals in the way making it physically Impossible for that to ever happen.

But on the other hand, I guess Squad Sight allows Snipers to pervert the laws of physics on a regular basis, so it's a trade off.

True on both accounts. Whenever my operatives get to ~20 kills the Sniper who appears the most is in the 30s just because of that perk. ^_^

The cover does nothing! Just shot a Sectoid right through a tomb and two rows of gravestones. The X-Com operatives seem to be quite the trick-shot artists. The aliens are not that bad either. :wizard:

IKR? On my first campaign a motherfvcking Sectoid Commanders killed an Assault operative who was one rank below Colonel (forgot the name) through two cars. <_<

Then he was OHOKed across the map, so... fair game. ^_^

Heh. If the cover is actually good for once, you can be sure that a Muton will charge out of cover, throw a grenade at said cover and giggle, while my operatives are suddenly standing in the open.

My game gets here tomorrow.

Sadly I cant play until after my French Test, Film Paper, Greek reading response, and I play at least one game of Twilight Imperium in my dorm.

This weekend however I will make the God Emperor proud and smite the xenos in his name.
I want to see how well I can adapt XCOM into playing like the Codex Astartes.

Yep. Or those damned... eh. Forgot the name. Those synthetic disks that turn into a machine of doom with like fifty guns if you don't kill them in the first turn. ANNOYING.

I seem to have this ridiculous urge to reload if one of my squadmembers gets killed. Especially if they're female. Am I crazy?

My husband is further in the game than I am, and I'm envious of his armor and weapons. Every time he goes into combat, his soldiers don't even take a scratch. Mine usually get taken out by a grenade from a muton, or mind-controlled by a sectoid commander that I'm trying to capture. Or my one medic gets killed (who happens to be female). I'm getting better, though. Eventually, I have to think my emphasis on better ships and ship weapons, over squad safety, will come in handy....right?

I have learned to not bunch up squaddies, which has helped, but on some maps, it's difficult to tell which direction enemies will be coming from. I've developed a "stay within the blue and overwatch" policy, which seems to be working so far. Slow and steady wins the race and all that.

I must say, suppression is a very handy skill to have. Especially around cars and gas tanks. Image IPB

Yeah I suffer from squadmate attachment too. But interestingly enough my 'Main' unit never once got killed on my playthrough. Injured and hospitalized plenty, but never killed. But it is hard for me to adjust to not being able to save everyone all the time.

And Suppression does rock if you have someone who specializes in it. Especially heavies who can suppress groups at once. One cheap trick I love to do is suppress Muton Berserker, then have someone else take a shot at them so they can't stop themselves from moving. Also works to lure them into the path of Overwatches, and the close combat free shots my Assault shotgun guy gets.

Yeah, same here... had a Sectoid Commander take control of my favorite operative (Assault Colonel, Gabriella Morgan)... made my Support girl panic, attack the Colonel and successfully kill her.

I intentionally got that Support woman killed in the next mission. Would have done it again.

I'm guessing the squaddies and their names must be totally random, as one of the females in my husband's game is Sarah Lee (think delicious baked goods). Makes me giggle every time I see her.  Anyway, he gave her fuchsia hair, so she fits right in with the other fluorescent-haired peeps in his squad. One of the heavies is black with bright green hair and beard. *sigh*

Mostly I remember them from their nicknames, because I'm lazy. "Oh no! Not Angel! (Or Disco, Cairo, Hex, etc.) You aliens will pay for that!"

I started up a second playthrough, because I wasn't happy with how the first one was turning out (lost almost half of the council), and right out of the gate, I had 3 females in my squad. Now, they're all Colonels, since I won't let them die on me. I then started up a third and fourth (I'm crazy), and no females to be seen. Still haven't finished the game yet, but I'm working on it.

Well, the nice thing about the Sectoid Commanders' mind control is that if you kill the SC, the mind control seems to stop. That's been the last enemy on the map each time I've run into one so far, so that's really just an assumption on my part.

It does! I was afraid at first that it would have the same effect as shooting the controlling one of two mind linked Sectoids aka killing my squaddie with the feedback. Thank Firaxis that this is not happening.

Man, I hate it when I have to choose between helping out one country who's almost abandoning the XCOM project or another in the exact same situation.

$@&* you France! -_-

I never understood why they would stop backing the project. What are they gonna do then? Fight alone?

The news reports suggest that they are trying to make a deal with aliens. No clue if there's ever a confirmation.

Yay! That is good to know. I was hoping that was the case. I keep trying to stun them, but by the time I get my stun guy over there (yep, I call him my 'stun guy', heheh), someone is already mind-controlled.

So does stunning the Sectoid Commander with the Arc Thrower remove the mind control, like killing the SC does?

Oh, and if I can accumulate more females, I am SO doing an all-female squad. I keep hiring more peeps, but they're usually male!

First thing I learned in the demo was that the shooting effects are purely for show.

When you're in cover, you're assumed to also be peeking around the corner (if there is one) that allows you (and enemies) to have LOS.

You can notice that as sometimes LOS disappears once the cover is destroyed.

The combat is entirely rules based.  So if LOS exists, the chance to hit is completely determined by the situation.  The World geometry itself does not provide any protection for either you or the aliens.  The protection comes purely from the to hit penalty being in "tall cover" and "short cover" provide (which can be doubled if you hunker down.

Embarrassing fact: I haven't found how to deploy the Shivs yet. I'm pretty sure I built them, but am not sure how to put them in my squad at mission launch.

They're in your soldier list. Usually at the bottom with no rank.

If every country withdraws from the project, you get a finale scene where Agent 47-- er, I mean the bald faceless guy is being mind controlled by a Sectoid Commander.  I figured that when a country panicked enough to leave the project, they were in the grip of the aliens anyways.
