It's OK, but it's not X-Com.

Shocker, there are people who don't like a game! Even more shocking there is an update to a game and fans of the original don't like it.
The game has a different feel to it on the tactical side. Most of that is due to the maps. They're smaller. The feel is more of a CQB team in operation in the new one than the old XCOM which had larger maps where it was harder to have a whole team fight together. I actually at this point prefer (having bounced back and forth between the two the last couple of days) the newer maps because of that coordination opportunity. It feels less like a series one on one fights and more like a team effort now.
I don't miss the need to manage more than one base - but then again functionally I did exactly what this game does. I built one real base and then a bunch of bases that were radars/hangars for interception because it was easier to defend. I haven't had and don't imagine base attacks are in the game.
It isn't the same but the feel of the game is largely intact for me. I'd love to see them take on TFTD (and leave out cruise ship attacks) or even branch with this approach to JA2.

Also: This was fun.
Convinced me that the AI doesn't cheat by knowing where I am. It flew right over the truck and right beside the three guys it had no idea were there.
Haha, my current sniper's nickname is Zero too!

The most fitting name till now, imo, was my purple haired heavy-girl aka Disco!

Chryssalids are by far the biggest threat that base has, IMO. If you don't lose anyone to them, you're pretty much done unless you make some really horrible mistakes against the other enemies and you get really unlucky, and the Sectoid Commander ends up forcing you to kill some of your own operatives.

Clearly a lot of people posting in this thread like it, and probably won't be swayed by a negative opinion.

Sometimes UFOs have ladders and stuff to get up on the roof. Maybe that was the case?
It wasn't an issue for me. It looked very much like a Large Scout UFO with some slight differences internally. Was able to capture the ethereal though m/
I lost two majors in that battle. Rest of my squad was critically wounded.
Note to self: The giant Sectoid Bots can do two attacks in one turn. Just so happens, one of those can be a massive AOE attack that nearly wipes the squad out if you're not ready for it. If I didn't use the tele shield, my entire squad would be dead. Now I know to spread out when fighting them.
It did suck to lose two of my best players though. That was a huge blow. I was able to capture two enemies and gather new research. Since I've learned it's better to capture enemies, I'm just going to improve my arc guns and put one of each of my support squad. They each have an extra slot. It seems efficient because it saves me money building expensive plasma rifles. Capturing allows you to take their weapons.
I hope this game gets some DLC or an expansion. That would be awesome...

Just noticed: Dr. Vahlen is supposed to be German? I thought she was French! I said earlier that I don't have a problem with her German, since I thought she was French and for a non native speaker it was rather good. But when she is supposed to be her first language? Hahaha.... no. Not even her accent sounds German when she speaks English. Was it so hard to actually hire a german VA?
And the license plates in the tutorial. C'mon. How hard is it to research that there shold be the "HH" for "Hansestadt Hamburg" on them. Not SQ

First time I met a Sectopod, I lost Screamer, my terribly low willed Sniper, and Sentinel, a Support medic who had survived since first contact. They took cover behind the same strut on an alien supply ship, and so died in the same mortar salvo. Screamer was a great shot, but after a few too many hospital stays, she couldn't be expected to keep it together if the bugs got close. Sentinel was beaten to hell too. He'd panic if she panicked. In the end, it was for the best for the team since it let me develop my other psionic Canadian, Boomer (Is it the poutine? The Tim Hortons?) and spend more time with my favorite sniper, Skye "Reaper" Shepard.
I hope this game gets some DLC or an expansion. That would be awesome...
There are roughly 10 achievements listed on Steam that no one has unlocked yet, all of them making reference to things no one has seen in the game yet... They look curiously like achievement from Terror From The Deep (the second XCOM game), leading to rumors of the what the first DLC will be about!

Sure it's a different game than the original, some streamlining had to be done for it to appeal to a large audience in this day and age, but I find the XCOM feel to be definitely there.
And when you want more classic XCOM, and once every few years I know I do, simply fire up the originals, they work fine with Dosbox. Or wait for Xenonauts to be released.
Anyhoo, finally got around to doing the alien base. It was already friggin' December by that point.
Did it after I realised that I had titan armour and plasma weapons for my entire squad, a firestorm on every continent, full sat coverage, and all research done. Wasn't any point anymore to not advancing the story.
I basically steamrolled through it in no time, and only got hit once.
Oh another thing, anyone know how much defence matters? Was wondering if I should switch to ghost armour for that +20 defence over titan's 0 defence but extra health and poison/fire immunity.
Thinking about trying archangel armour too, for my snipers.

Yeah and with my luck the first 3 things i encounter is just them. They are in my face before i actually can do anything and thanks to some ridiculous luck my heavy take the brunt of their attacks and barely survive. After that i just slow pushed the entire way through and only lost men when i tried to zap the commander. Gave up on the idea and killed him to. The mission was quite easy when i just had some decent armor.
Too bad this game went side ways quite fast after that when i lost almost my entire squad to a huge flanking attack by those nasty robots that can shot twice and got a horrible AoE. So another game will be started and this time i will be slightly more paranoid than before.

I didn't even try to capture the Septoid Commander because all my team was almost dead already, and as I knew I'd face them again in future missions I thought the risk wasn't worth it.
Especially because every single character I was attached to emotionally (all the vets, haha) were in that mission.

I'm currently using an all-female squad, Support, Assault, Heavy and Sniper... all of them female.

Essentially, if you have a guy with the arc thrower equipped, and the hostile has the blue radius around it, you can stun that guy.
