Just played the demo and I'm still squeeing. Finally someone taking an old school tactical game approach and updating it in all the right ways. Admittedly the demo is short, but loving what I've seen so far. Had no issues with controls or performance at all.

Exactly.
The demo showed me why I vowed to never touch demos again. It's like taking a bite out of a cake, somebody grabbing the cake and telling you that you'll have to wait two more weeks for the rest.

But finally this looks to be a decent reboot from people who understood what was fun about the original. So I feel comfortable giving them my pre-order sale now.

Stupid me.
Hope the final game will be properly difficult like the original. No, not difficult...COMPLETELY @#$%%#@ BRUTAL would be more apt I think. Oh the times half my squad got wiped right after disembarking from the skyranger...
And has there been any word on which aliens from the original will be returning and which ones won't?
There's already sectoids and floaters in the demo, 2 classics, and those thin men which are new. Really hoping to see Cryssalids, MOST HATED enemies of all time, make a comeback so the tradition of always carrying a live grenade on your squaddies can be kept alive.

I think this game will not be quite as merciless as the original (which had a bug in it that always reverted the difficulty to beginner. Yes... beginner was THAT freaking hard) on normal difficulty levels. BUT, they devs have stated they want to make sure players find the game very challenging and that getting through without losses is a difficult thing. The lead designer has boldly stated that the hardest difficulty on iron man has never been completed by anyone at his office haha.

The only thing the demo did not show me though was the save system. I'm hoping we can have individual saves between missions at least. I don't mind redoing an entire map because I made a careless error, but I'd probably hate an autosave system that gave me no choice in having to accept the loss of a favorite unit.
I don't mind some units permanently dying. That comes with the game. But I can see I'll end up getting attached to a few of them.

It's really hard for me to complain however-how many turn based tac games, even a bit (or more) over simplified are even being made these days outside the indie scene?
Don't know if I want to buy the game for Firaxis even having the balls to make a modern day turn based squad game in the 1st place, or not buy it in a nerd rage fit for the depth that have (at least with my short experience with the demo-it might open up a bit) been stripped from it.
On a totally tangential note: Why on earth would they even try to remake XCOM or Syndicate as an FPS? Seriously, a property like Crusader: No Remorse would be a much better candidate for an FPS remake. Wait a minute-that actually sounds pretty badass.........

It's hard to get a full read with how short "and easy" the demo was. Don't qualify that as a 100% knock though-there are some things about the original that were pretty obtuse (the UI for example).

Supposedly you can change the difficulty level if you mess with .ini files. By default it's set to "easy." Or so I hear.

Ironman mode, with a single-file auto-save, is what you're concerned about. Luckily, it's optional.Cutlass Jack wrote...
I lost a few people on my first demo run. So embarassing.

Also go-go Ricardo Lopez!
I still lost one guy though. But hey getting a 1-8 kill ratio is pretty good.

The game features a hardcore mode which they highlight prevents saving/loading aside from autosaves. WHich means they likely have a game mode which does NOT do that

That's just what they want us to think! I won't fall for that incredibly sound logic!
But more seriously, thanks both of you for clueing me in about Hardcore mode. That does sound like a mode I'll probably enjoy trying at least once...as long as the game allows you to have more than one save file.
Which sounds incredibly stupid thing to worry about...unless you've played Dragon's Dogma.

Hardcore Mode... I'm pretty sure I won't be able to play it.
I already degenerated into madness, screamed german profanities at the sky (I was told by non-germans that our language is absolutley perfect for enraged shouting
No, sir! No Hardcore mode for me.

This is all we can get till some kickstarters mate. So we have to manage(deal) with it.
And personally i can live with combat changes but having only 1 base dissapoints me. Well at least we can watch our scientists butchering gray bodies

The only thing that bothers me about the combat a wee little bit is the simplification to the standard two actions per turn. But yes, having only one base is a major dissapointment. That said, the game still feels great regardless. Must-have, IMHO.Cyberarmy wrote...

Regarding those that lost men (or women) in the demo mission: You do realize you've got a healing unit, right?
Yup! Thats the one the Alien shot in the head.

I never really bought into the caricature argument, since i always sort of felt that the original was somewhat cartoony in this regard too (that hair!)

As for only having one base...I dunno. Guess I will miss designing various types of bases all around the globe.
Though I'll already be happy if the aliens at least try to assault your base regularly once you ****** them off enough.
