I don't think that's it, as I've finished all available research and got the Gollop chamber built and ready to use, which I think leads to the final mission.
I've heard mention somewhere that one sure way to get a battleship is to wait till you get a scout UFO and then let that escape. A little while later a battleship should show up. Only problem is that I'm not getting any scouts anymore, only ever abductors and supply ships (which can be quite annoying to deal with thanks to the buggy camera always trying to focus on the wrong map height).

Hm, I thought I captured the Gollop artifact from the Battleship, but I guess I actually got it while taking the Overseer ship. I'm not too certain about that method to get a battleship to appear though... It seemed rather random when it did show up.

Okay, after finishing my first playthrough on 'classic' I'm now doing a 'classic+Ironman'. Yeah, I'm probably going to lose the war this time. My troops are getting slaughtered, it's not pretty. Few soldiers live long enough to even get nicknames. Four countries already quit the XCOM project...

I'm having a great time!

Lol. Black Titan armour with Plasma weapons looks so cool. Having a full team of colonels is so very satisfying, especially when Cyberdiscs, Mutons, Berserkes seem to fall apart in the face of the amount of fire they're throwing out. Although Muton Elites seem to cause trouble.

Although do any of the more experienced players have tips on how to maintain loyalty of council members as I've lost 4 members so far, on the field undefeated, but I'm having a far tougher time holding the attacks off from UFOs and countering the panic which seems to creep up regardles of how well my troops do on the ground.

For instance. I had an abduction mission in Japan, France and UK. Both France and the UK are at red so clearly I have to chose one of these two or risk loosing them, especially as my base is situated in Europe. So choosing the UK and winning there would that mean the panic level goes down in France and other areas of EU as well? Or is it only on specific council missions and terror missions (which are bloody hard) does that take place? As ignoring Japan, seemed to push up panic levels across Asia and Argentina went red as well, but I've written off South America and Africa as the cost of keeping America Europe and Asia secured.

What combinations do you guys also use, in terms of facility building and troop upgrades ie: do you favour one more than the other and how has that worked out? Also do you do put off the priority missions or is it better to do those soon when you get them?

Stopping abduction missions results in a decrease in panic in the country you did the mission in, but an increase in panic in other continents. The best way is to get satellite coverage up ASAP. You can detect UFOs and do missions in those countries, which will also reduce their panic level. You also get -2 just for getting a satellite up.

Facility upgrading, on classic Ironman, is definitely satellites first. Carapace and Laser weapons are still useful, but money is pretty tight to start.

Finally got XCOM...and I had a blast playing it last night on classic/Ironman. Everyone except my sniper got wiped at the beginning of the third mission (the escort one) and my sniper ended up soloing the escort...it was glorious! I'm still trying to learn the ropes of the game..... honestly, the only reason people die on me is because I don't know how to utilize cover properly; enemies always end up shooting me over the cover somehow.

I was only planning on playing as far as the tutorial goes (till you capture a live alien for interrogation) so I'm gonna restart for a proper game this time with the tutorial off on Normal/Ironman.

Damn cheating aliens! My sniper got killed by a muton that appeared beside him out of nowhere. My whole team was on overwatch in the same direction, and none of them saw or heard anything until the bastard was directly beside them, clearly moving from exactly the direction they were looking.

Ah, and my neighbour is showing XCOM to a friend right now. I was over for a few minutes and the friend was just assembling a squad with the new recruits for the second tutorial mission.

*looks through soldiers*
"Who shall I choose...?"
*sees chinese rookie Long Wang*
"Ooookay... you're in, dude!"

The cover is tricky to grasp, but when utilizing it you should keep in mind that it mainly increases the defense rating, which helps to lower the chance of a shot hitting its target. Low cover, the half shield icon, gives you 20 to your defense while the full cover, full shield icon, gives you 40 to your defense. Combine that with Smoke Grenades and armor defense and your soldiers will be able to get past some rather harrowing situations. I should also mention that full cover objects can be a bit weird in regards to sight. Even if it's a tree, your soldier will only be able to peek out from one side. So if you're more concerned about getting a wider field of vision rather than defense, partial cover will be what you're looking for.

Early on, there's not much you really need to build aside from satellite facilities and power, so I tend to focus on equipment. In my game, I put off the priority research items until I felt that my defensive and offensive research was at a good spot. The priority research puts your soldiers at a great deal of risk, especially if they aren't prepared equipment-wise.

So a question to those who have played both XCOM and Dishonored; which is better? They both look great but I can only get one.

So my question was ignored the first time but that's cool, that's cool......

How exactly do you want us to answer this? Seriously. O_o

It's a strategy x stealth action.

Both games are completely different in terms of gameplay, genre, narrative etc. etc. etc., so a dick-measuring contest of "better" and "worse" doesn't really work here.

:P

Answer by saying which one you liked more? They both look great and I'll get the other eventually but I'm just trying to see which one I should get for now.

Thanks Allan and FFLB.

I think I put too much emphasis on troop development and equipment early game. Now I have a crack squad of 6 colonels, with Titan armour, plasma weapons, etc. but I don't have full satellite coverage so I might be unbeatable on the ground, but I seem to be forever running round implementing damage control due to rising panic levels. I think now I've got the hang of things I might start a new game, now I know what I'm doing and I have a better feel for the game. As I'll probably lose this one despite my tech level.

I don't know how, but somehow this game dragged me away from my second run of Borderlands 2! :o

On a different note, why does no one with a shotgun ever actually hit anything? Even on shots that have a high percentage, and the enemy is right in front of them, they always miss. I've started switching them over to assault rifles instead, and they seem to have better luck with them. Does the shotgun/aim combo get better with better weapons?

They do. When you're shooting right in the face of the enemy. Or when you use that ability to force the enemy to change cover - but then the damage is pretty pitifull. My Assault lass practically never misses and is the third most damaging squadmember in the group - right after the snipers. Then again I usually shoot from the tile right next to the enemy, with the maximum distance being about 3 tiles away. Shotguns crit like crazy from up close (and are the second most damaging weapon class) - love them.

Shotgun guys have huge range penalties, but also get huge range boosts (and higher crit chance) at close range.

I prefer the shotguns to the standard rifle, though you can give them rifles if you want better accuracy. I usually give them standard laser/plasma rifles.

Stupid geame cheats like hell.I jsut got 3 groups of 3 Chryssalids. Each one walked into my view from dark, far reaches of hte map, trigered it's cutscene and then got another move that it used ot close.

So basicly 9 Chryssalids just got 2 turns worth of movement and crossed half the map.
1 second there is no visible enemy on the map, the next I'm sorrounded.

I'd say you need a Sniper with In the Zone and a decent gun. Kill as many Chryssalids in one turn, as the clip size allows (they don't seek cover and die to one sniper shot) :)

Plus Suppression fire mode of Heavys and Supports, that debuffs the enemy Aim by 30 (Heavys even get an aoe + damage version eventually). But is uses up so much ammo, sniff. Anyway, combining the 3 things: Cover + Smoke + Suppression seems to be the only way to survive a direct firefight with the aliens. And at least on classic and above, the enemies will still hit you through all this. If they don't, they'll probably lob a granade your way. So yeah, cover is needed, but if feels like fighting a loosing battle. You need flanking manouvers and superior firepower. But then again flanking is also very tricky, as usually you end up "waking" more ads. Ech, it's not easy at all.

On the upside it seems like I managed to finally equip my squad, field Firestoms and are rocking. Just shot down the Overseer ship. Seems that there are 3 new Alien species on board, all of the toughest ones... ugh.

To be completely honest, I never actually gave shotguns a spin and I don't feel like doing so in my current campaign, seeing as getting close to Chryssalids and Mutons is a little bit too risky for the time being =P... I'm way too fond of my operatives, haha. Maybe I'll start another campaign just to test the shotties. We'll see.

Except it does. I never understood the "they're different enough that they can't be compared" mentality society seems to have. It's quite easy to compare a lot of things tbh.

So hold on, just because I think both games are fundamentally different, I have to be part of some "society" which I assume is just a polite word for calling me a "mindless sheep"?

It's still a fact that both are too different for an objective comparison. You might argue which one is better but that would be subjective in the end, just like Apples & Oranges.

I prefer one-shotting Sectopods myself. Well, I guess it wouldn't really be a one-shot if I had to use double-shot, but it's all during one attack.

I had so much fun stalking an Ethereal (last remaining alien on the mission) through his ship with my invisible Assault veteran with his Alloy cannon. Poor thing was floating around confused and alone, with the soldier always one step behind it... until the Ghost armour had no charges left. Then a rapid fire double crit at point-blank range ended it.

Not enough Heavy Plasma to go around? That Heavy must feel like he drew the short end of the stick.
