Nope , no alternate meaning behind that statement really. I literally just meant society as whole as far as I know seems to think like this. Of course I'm exaggerating here and we can just scale "society" down to "a lot of people".Avalla'ch wrote...
So hold on, just because I think both games are fundamentally different, I have to be part of some "society" which I assume is just a polite word for calling me a "mindless sheep"?J. Reezy wrote...
Except it does. I never understood the "they're different enough that they can't be compared" mentality society seems to have. It's quite easy to compare a lot of things tbh.

Finally got XCOM...and I had a blast playing it last night on classic/Ironman. Everyone except my sniper got wiped at the beginning of the third mission (the escort one) and my sniper ended up soloing the escort...it was glorious! I'm still trying to learn the ropes of the game..... honestly, the only reason people die on me is because I don't know how to utilize cover properly; enemies always end up shooting me over the cover somehow.
The cover is tricky to grasp, but when utilizing it you should keep in mind that it mainly increases the defense rating, which helps to lower the chance of a shot hitting its target. Low cover, the half shield icon, gives you 20 to your defense while the full cover, full shield icon, gives you 40 to your defense. Combine that with Smoke Grenades and armor defense and your soldiers will be able to get past some rather harrowing situations. I should also mention that full cover objects can be a bit weird in regards to sight. Even if it's a tree, your soldier will only be able to peek out from one side. So if you're more concerned about getting a wider field of vision rather than defense, partial cover will be what you're looking for.
Ah thanks.
Another question: Is there a time limit in the game? Do you have to do those priority missions right away? I'm planning on doing all other research before I do the priority rearch project....is that alright? Is there any downside to this?

Not as far as I know. I think I'm a year and a half into the game, but nothing's really pressuring me to beat it. UFOs have slowed to a trickle, as have the alien attacks. If there is a time limit, I haven't reached it yet. And no, I don't think there's much downside to researching everything else before moving onto the priority research.

Awesome.
Year and a half in? If ya don't mind me asking...I'm curious. Do you have any nations that have dropped out of the council so far?
Also, can't seem to make up my mind between Sprinter and Covering Fire for my Support class.

I only had 2 nations drop out rather early on, probably within 3 months into the game. I had to manage it for a few more months, but after I reached full satellite coverage the abduction missions began giving me only 2 choices instead of 3 and eventually they stopped altogether.
If they're a medic, Sprinter would be preferable. Even if they're not, I it's still fairly useful when scouting ahead.
Since things were getting rather ho-hum, after getting my last psionic to Colonel, I decided to embark on the final mission... *spoilers*
It was a cakewalk compared to a battleship. I was expecting 40+ aliens with the possibility of using two squads to simultaneously clear the ship. Suffice to say, it was rather underwhelming. I was also disappointed that I didn't get world stats as an end of game comparison.

Too bad it doesn't seem to save your final stats anywhere, so I've had to screenshot them all. I'll list a few (this is for a normal ironman game)...
Overall score: 20601
Days until victory: 387
Battles Won: 48
Aliens Killed: 475
Soldiers Lost: 16
Average Shot %: 67.5
Average Damage per Shot: 7.7
One Shot Kills: 316
UFOs Shot Down: 12
Total Credits Earned: 20644

Most of this game was taking away the grind from the original. It worked really well for a lot of it, but I feel it was missing some key aspects. Particularly resurgence of alien bases. Only storming then one was a little sad. I missed sending my firestorm out on recon missions to identify a potential base location.
Also I felt the reliance on satellites was bit annoying. Not matter how well you were doing the game relied on Abduction missions to essentially do you over.
Other then that though really impressed with it. Will be doing some more plays thats for sure!

Covering Fire is situational and doesn't help that much. Sprinter is awesome all the time.

I think the opposite. There aren't many places I need the extra tiles but there are always places I need the extra shots.
In the end I have 2 supports. My "medic" type has the extra moves, the other doesn't but I kinda wish I'd specced both out with covering fire.

Of the changes:
I thought 2 "time units" would annoy me instead of action points. That never bothered me in the end. It felt right and with the classes you always felt like you had "more" units per turn in many cases.
I LOVED the smaller scale of the maps. XCOM (and dear god even more TFTD) was a lot of wandering about and fighting a series of one on one battles because it was hard for th team to clear the black and stay together. The new game you could really use actual small unit tactics actual within the bounds of games with aliens, flying people and plasma guins.
Action cam I thought would bug me the way the "action cam" in Falout 3 bugged me. Somehow they made it unobtrusive and natural feeling.
I did like the use of classes. My troopers were always a bit fo a specialist along these same lines in XCOM so this sort of formalized that process.
One base. As I've said before I always ran one base with a lot of
smaller bases that were bnothing but fighters and radar so this felt the
same.
Satellites, as you said, are a bit off. REally the whole game boils down to how early and fast you can spread satellites all over the world. I suspect a lot of people don't understand that and will lose the game very early on. You'd think the "helpful" base admin would nudge you in that direction.
There's not enough to research. I'm done and I've got a ton of scientists just sitting about doing nothing and I'm not that far into the game.
The smaller squad size works BUT I wish you could take 6 people + 1 tank. As it is the tank doesn't seem to be worth swapping out one person.
Now I just want TFTD and Jagged Alliance redone in the same way.

There is supposedly a schedule that the alien invasion is on. So at some point the attacks are supposed to become insanely hard to defeat. However, much like killing the mind controlling alien is supposed to kill the mind controlled squadmate, I don't think the schedule was implemented below classic of Impossible difficulty. AFIK!

Some of the currently "unachieveable achievements" have a nautical flair to them. Look for TFTD to be the 60 or 90 day DLC. The XCom ini file has placeholders for a 30, 60, and 90 day DLC. Planned SKUs or pure placeholder, we don't know yet and sale estimates don't show up until tomorrow.

I was doing Snap Shot + Opportunist to remove the aim penalty. I dunno, it seemed to be working ok. I'll get some new snipers on the Squadsight path, and see how it goes.
Squad sight is great in open terrain like in the run up to UFOs. I normally post her on high ground in cover well behind the battle line. That way she can see the whole battlefield.
But I prefer to deploy my snap shot sniper in built areas where she can give close support with over watch on the move.
So I use both.

Yes. Everything they say when using psionics is rather... cruel.
Oh... I just downed my first battleship and started the attack. Then I saw the Codename for the mission: Operation Dying Hero. I think Bradford has a rather strange humor

Stupid geame cheats like hell.I jsut got 3 groups of 3 Chryssalids. Each one walked into my view from dark, far reaches of hte map, trigered it's cutscene and then got another move that it used ot close.
So basicly 9 Chryssalids just got 2 turns worth of movement and crossed half the map.
1 second there is no visible enemy on the map, the next I'm sorrounded
The key is to move your most forward trooper with your first move in the turn. Then you only move your others as far as the first. That way, if your first guy triggers the Chyssalids, they will get a reaction move, but you should still have time to postion your troops and ready them in overwatch.
However, if your last move in your turn triggers the Chryssalids, they will get a reaction move, then also the full move in their turn, meaning you have no time to react.
Chryssalids encountered in the open are not a huge problem as I tend to decimate them on overwatch and the on normal fire. Plus they sometimes stop to attack civilians which buys even more time

This. Very much so, It's my first foray into XCOM. And whilst I've been able to defeat everything the aliens ahve trown at me on the fireld and ended up with a crack squad of Colonels, I was still getting screwed over by sattalites and panic, which became more a damage control issue. I've started a new game now I've got a better idea of what I'm doing so I have a more predetermined plan rather than reacting only to rising panic situations which almost seems doomed to fail so far. No matter how successful I am. Although I held out a fair while, enough to fully equip my troops with Titan armour andplasma weapons.
