I've beaten the normal campaign and just started a classic campaign. Normal wasn't too difficult once I got a real feel for the game. I didn't lose any troops.

I didn't do too much "save scumming" on normal. classic seems to be quite a bit more difficult on the tactical side. Better AI, more aliens. Am I just going to have to accept that some of those boots on the ground aren't coming back?

I just really despise losing troops.

Unless you're willing to load previous save games, yes, you will have to accept that. :)

Hooooooly shh...

That was prob. the most heart-pounding, adrenaline-inducing gaming moment I've ever experienced. I now know why I bought this game. Jesus.

So I got an alien abduction mission. There were 3 choices, and if I didn't pick France, it would have reached the maximum panic level. But here's the thing, it was rated 'Very Difficult' and it'd be my first time playing this difficulty (In contrast, the other two were rated Easy) Also, my main Sniper and Heavy were both wounded and I didn't have enough cash to increase my squad size (I was only at 4) due to me investing everything on satellites and workshops.

The mission would also give me 4 engineers so it was just too good to pass up! Against my better judgement, I deployed my main Assault and Support (both Lieutenants), my backup sniper (who was only a Squaddie) and a Rookie.

Note: I'm playing on Normal/Ironman

We started off in a suburban map with a restaurant (and a couple of vehicles behind it) right in front of us; it was also the smallest map I'd played and pretty much screamed CQC. So I post 2 guys outside at the back corners of the building providing cover fire through the windows for my assault who heads inside. I post the sniper on the roof. So far so good. My assault then opens another door inside (to a freezer room?) to find 2 Thin Men feeding on a corpse. One immediately jumps outside through the side entrance in order to flank me I guess, but the Support who was posted at the back kills him, while my assault cleans up inside. Excellent.

But then, I got overconfident. Then was another door heading outside to the back of the restaurant so my assault carefully opens door to find a trailer parked between the restaurant and another building behind the trailer. I figured I'd dash inside the trailer to end the turn which was a HUGE mistake; I have no idea why I did this, as my Support and the Rookie were still behind the restaurant.

2 Floaters and 2 Sectoids emerge from behind the shadows and they surround the trailer. One Sectoid and one Floater inflict massive damage on her leaving her with only 2 bars of health (good thing she had the Carapace armor) and the other two suppress her. I was about to cry. She was my best soldier (5 missions, 20 kills) and my only assault. I couldn't believe this was the end. I'd gotten so attached to her, I'd grown to care for her... in fact, she was there from the beginning. The whole mission was doomed to failure without her. Anywhere I tried to move, the 'Supressed' warning would pop up, and there was nothing anyone could do to save her. To make matters worse, another Floater jumped from the building behind the trailer, onto the trailer, and then onto the restaurant roof and down (wtf?!), clearly heading for the guys at the back though he didn't notice my sniper for some reason. I lost all hope and said **** it, popped Run and Gun and made a dash for behind the restaurant to where my support guys were. In fact, I made sure to move within range of the aforementioned Floater who was heading for my support guys...you know, just in case some miracle happened, I'd be able to take that Floater out.

A miracle happened. It turns out she had Lightning Reflexes (which I didn't know worked for supression fire as well) so the supressing Floater misses, and then to my utter disbelief and amazement, the Sectoid missed as well. I dash right behind the Floater behind the restaurant and kill it, the Support runs to heal me. I figured my sniper would be pretty much useless on this map so I called her back to where everyone was (behind the restaurant). And the Floaters came after us, and we cleaned them up one by one by playing a game of cat-and-mouse. We were posted at the back of the restaurant (where we started off the map) for the duration of the game and my tactic was to have my Support lure in Floaters to the back where my Sniper would be on Overwatch and my Assault would pop up from behind cover to provide a shotgun blast to the face.

It turns out there were another 5 Floaters (for a total of 8!) which we defeated using the same tactic. The mission was a success with no casualties.

Yeah, I didn't capture a Floater early on either, but no need to worry. They occasionally reappear on some UFOs. That'll be your chance to capture one.

Yeah, those moments where your guys manage to survive a situation that you considered lost is definitely a feel-good moment. I tend to remember the times that those aliens make their shots and take my guys out with one critical hit or when they gang up on one soldier and whittle them down with shot after shot.

So now it makes sense why we only seem to go to the same 16 countries.
XCOM only defends those nations which help fund it and supply it most likely.

Kind of sad really now because so many nations or in trouble. Like Egypt I mean Nigeria and South Africa are under protection but not Egypt.

My Sniper is now named Ludd.
Because he blams all the mechs with his nice double tap ability.

So I was gifted this last night, and whilst I can't really say much about anything at this point, I can conclusively say one specific thing.

http://cloud-2.steam...A011879B27D771/

I love this woman more than is probably humanly healthy for what is essentially a set of dice wrapped in a randomly generator pixel body. She's more than just some random recruit with a slightly better rifle than everyone else who occasionally hits things, however. Oh no. She's an absurd head shotting machine, and I'm strangely taken aback by how ridiculous her marksmanship is pretty much all the time. Everyone else? Those guys are just there to play plasma sponge and spot targets.

It was also pretty funny when she interrupted Dr Vahlen's scientific fangirling over the aliens that are comprised entirely of energy by overwatch sniping the thing from halfway across the map. Through a wall. Oh, sorry doc. Were you saying something?

Uhm...do all soldiers start doing evil laughs when using Psionics?

Yes. Everything they say when using psionics is rather... cruel.

I wish I could understand/hear what they were saying. The men in my squad with Psionics powers you can hear quite clearly, but the females seem to get cut off mid-sentence. When the girls do the evil laugh, it cracks me up.

I know what you mean. My female snipers are absolute killing machines, and every time you see them lining up a shot, and pulling the trigger, you just know it's going to connect in a big, bad, awesome way.

I have to fight the urge to take all of my favorites out each time. I've been trying to rotate in a new squaddie here and there, and am currently working on getting a couple of new support troops up to speed. Call me crazy, but I like taking 2 support soldiers to battle - each one carrying 3 medikits (once they get to that level). We don't always need them, but until you get them leveled up to the point where the kits heal more than a measly 4 points, it's almost required. Well, at least for me. Heh.

On a total sidenote, I was watching my husband play yesterday for most of the day, and once he hit 100 saves, the save order got out of whack. None of them were in date order anymore. If you're on XBox, that's a total pain to fix. He tried doing individual deletes within the XCOM menu, but it kept rebuilding the save game list, and took quite a while to do one. He ended up having to go to the main XBL menu and deleting them that way.

Yeah, yeah, I know that would be easier on PC. No need to go there. Image IPB

He's almost to the end of the campaign, though, so I think he's figured out the happy balance. I gotta cut him some slack - he doesn't play as much or as often as the rest of us probably do.

@Happy:

The lines I have gotten so far:
"VOICES in your head"
"Your NIGHTMARE is just beginning"
"-evil chuckle-"
"Bet you wished you stayed home today"

I love using Mindfray though.
You can utterly tear weaker mooks a new one.
Or get a good laugh at Mutons (Who are really weak to psionics turn on their fellows)

The Mutons are good at everything but willpower. It's ridiculous how easy you can turn them on each other... and pretty funny. The AI has no problem to gun down their own people Image IPB

So how high do you typically want your soldiers' will level to be before Psionics testing? I had one whose will was high 70s that made it, and one that was low 80s that didn't. Does it make sense to wait until they've been promoted a few times (and had subsequent will increases), or does it matter at all? Logically, it shouldn't matter, right? I am probably over-thinking this.

@Giggles - thanks. I wasn't sure if the female Psi lines were the same as male, but it kinda looks that way.

Lucky you, I've already overthunk this for you! Image IPB

I did get lucky and got Psi on my 'main' Squaddie without trouble. But later on when I was bored, I took some time to try to figure out the process. As near as I can tell it doesnt matter what level/will your character is. A newbie and a vet have the same chances. (hint: Very Low chance) Will just affects how well they use or resist psi.

Through much saving and reloading, I've figured out that whether they're Psi or not is determined the second you put them in the testing chamber. Saving after they're in the chamber and waiting 10 days will always yield the same results. However if you save before putting them into testing, then put them in and wait ten days the results can vary.

So the really cheezy way to get that certain someone Psi is to save before you put them in, then put them in the chamber and make a second save. Then advance time forward 10 days without responding to alien attacks so you can see the results. If you like the end results, then reload save #2 and play out those 10 days normally. You'll get those results again. If you don't like the results, reload save #1, pop them in the chamber again and save over #2.

Its time consuming but it works.

I'm guessing female snipers are pretty common then... I too have snipers all of which are female and the one who has Squadsight is a badass killing machine. She has single-handedly turned the tide of the battle in my favor on multiple occasions. I don't know if I could take it if something were to happen to her. For instance, she's always at the back of the map, sniping enemies from ridiculous distances...so this one time on a terror mission, a Floater flew up and teleported from across the map right behind her which was probably the biggest WTF moment in the game for me. Is this normal, btw?

Now that I think about it, it seems that every female always gets assigned either Assault or Sniper in my game, and every guy gets assigned Support which is hilarious.

Here is the datamined psi formula.  At least, that's the most reputable one I've seen and seems to be generally accepted.  I didn't find it myself.   ^_^^_^^_^

Cutlass Jack has a very interesting suggestion though!  I look forward to trying that out for myself this week!  I don't know if I'll use it, since it's gaming the game, but I can't also say I'll never use it.  :lol::lol:

Yeah I only used the process above for my main squad's second psi. It was mostly due to intense curiosity as to if the game predetermined a unit's Psi potential at birth (i.e. the second you got them as a recruit), By will, by rank or by complete randomness. So I did the test with a high rank squaddie, a newbie and someone inbetween with high will.

After I had the second psi I wanted, I just tossed everyone else in the toaster and took the results. Image IPB

^ So I'm reading that to mean that I should be testing everyone, including the n00bs sitting on the bench? I'll give it a try. It might just determine who gets the next promotion(s), and more air time.

This is probably what I'll do.  I tend to get overly attached to 1 character in each game.  I suspect The Cutlass Process will be helpful in getting my "hero"  psi-high.

I'd especially test the noobs on the bench. I think I ended up with maybe 12 of my 30+ units as Psis, even though I never used most of them even once. For some reason my Heavies seemed to be Psi the most.

^ So far, my only Psi user is my female support - Maggie "Angel" Sutherland. I thought Angel was an apt nickname, so I kept it.

I'm anxious to see how things shake out with my n00bs. For some reason, I really stocked up on them, so it could be a lengthy process to get through them.

Eh I just chuck noobs into combat if they dont have Psi powers.

Either they die (no real loss) or they become badass.
What is odd is that just now I got two women in from Britain Helen and Sarah Roberts.

Probably just a fluke.
