I've seen alines pull off impossible shots.
Shooting me trough 3 cars. Or trough 2 solid walls (solider in full cover). The shots just go trough the wall and kill me. How the hell does he even see me?

Snap a screenshot and I'll try to describe the way LOS works if you're still struggling with it.

I'm not stuggling with it.
I just think it sucks.

Shots shouldnt' ba passing trough solid walls like they weren't there.

So what is your squad make up?
Right now I go for:
2 support (six medpacks!) wearing titan, and alien grenades.
2 assault wearing archangel, with stunners
1 sniper wearing ghost, with a scope.
1 heavy wearing titan.

Then who ever becomes a Psi operative gets Psi armor.

Then of course my friend who runs around with all heavies. So much Dakka.

2 support, 2 assault, 1 sniper, 1 heavy. 4 are Psi's; the last a new recruit who tested as "The one". I'm going to run enough missions to bring her up to colonel and throw her into the abyss...

Currently, 1 support, 2 assault (one close range shotgunner, the other with a rifle who I generally use either as ranged fire support or to watch the others back whilst clearing rooms), 1 avatar of impossible marksmanship, and 1 heavy who couldn't hit the board side of a barn unless one of her squadmates was using it for cover. I may've nicknamed her 'Try Again', because obscure Warhammer 40k literature references are the best kind. It goes well with the bullet swarm trait, at least.

I also just recruited a bunch of scrubs with the hope one of them will turn out to be support. I could use a second support. So far I just keep getting assault.

Incidentally, how vital is Will? I mean, I'm generally aware of what it does, but by the time I could actually afford and was able to buy the Iron Will upgrade, half my squad were colonels or majors already and I don't want to start replacing them just because the upgrade isn't retroactive.

Will is great for resisting Psionic attacks.

Especially when you have to go up against Etherals.
You might want to put mind shields on when it comes to them.

I always take 2 support, 2 assault, 1 sniper, and 1 heavy, depending on the mission. If I switch it up any, it just involves replacing assault with more heavies. I really enjoy Run and Gun, so my assault peeps get front lines all the time.

I also tend to move the back ranks first. I move them as far forward as I can, then move the front peeps forward, but still within the overwatch lines. It's probably backward-thinking, but it seems to be habit for me, now.

@bleetman - I did the same thing, and waited a looong time to get Iron Will. Most of my Colonels and Majors have crap will, and will panic more often than I'd like. Although that comes in handy, because they usually end up shooting and killing the target that's nearest to them. Heh.

^sounds like my team setup. I usually move my Sniper forward first when starting a map so she can toss a probe ahead of the team. That goes a long way to letting me plan more tactically instead of reactively.

I don't really have squad members panic, but I'd rather not have a bunch of them mind controlled and whatever. It seems wrong that I have to retire my most experienced soldiers just because Iron Will isn't retroactive.

I love seeing Panic.

A beserker panic'ed my heavy.
Then she screamed and shot the crap out of it again!

I hit it with three attacks!

Well, if you get someone with high will who is the same class/gender as one of your experienced soldiers...you can always customize the new squaddie to look like him/her and dismiss the old one. Kind of a shoddy solution, though. It might bug you if you're a hardcore RP'er or if you are OCD about small things like this....you'll always know at the back of your mind it ain't the same person.

That will never not bug me :<

I suppose I'll just hand out mind shields when I get them and compliment it with combat drug smoke grenades if need be, and see how that goes. I am only playing on normal, after all.

It should be a non issue. I did the entire game with most of my group being the originals and didn't notice any real will related problems. The one time a unit of mine got mind controled by an Etheral, she was mind controling a muton herself which I kept control of. So had the muton help free his own controller. Was kind of funny.

Can you mind control your own troop back?

I should try that.

Maybe it's just me then. Whenever I bump into sectoid commanders, either I overwatch gib them immediately or they mind control my squad without much hassle. I've had maybe one resist it so far.

I suppose, though, it's not that bad an idea to try and train up some rookies as replacements. Knowing my luck, my ragtag bunch of ass-kicking misfits will turn out to have all the psionic potential of a damp sponge. Though it was somewhat... enlightening to watch my new Irish recruit try and fight muton beserkers and heavy floaters last mission. She spent half the time cowering in a bus shelter and blubbering to herself :(

I like to use 2 assault and 1 heavy, I sometimes mix it up the combination a little. But I usually equip them with alloy guns/ plasma guns if it's more long ranged. With Titan armour and either a nono fibre vest or chitin. As these guys are going to be suppressing and using run and gun to get in close and engage or flush enemies of use holo target to tag them for the rest of the team. So they are going to be in grenade range and I need them alive.

2 snipers using squadsight and double tap with gunsliger. I like using Plasma snipers and either Ghost or Archangel armour to get them in high positions. I get these two to leap frog each other so when I move I always have one sniper who can fire twice or on overwatch. And I agree these guys hit like a freight train.

Then I have one guy in support role as my medic with triple med kits and nano suit or grenades and Titan armour.

Luckily all these guys and girls are colonels, and I I got Iron will as soon as I could so they're running about with will in the 70's at the moment. These guys do not break. :D

Mental note: don't try to train up new snipers on terror missions. Without squad sight or snap shot, they're basically useless.

(Also, terror missions in army bases are dicks. Why are there even civlians here, huh?)

2 Snipers with Ghost and Archangel with SCOPES, 2 supports in Titan (later Psi) with Medkits and Arc Thrower/Nade, 1 Assault in Ghost with Arc Thrower or SCOPE and 1 Heavy in Titan (later Psi) with SCOPE. Sometimes when a Support is wounded, I run two Heavys.... I also switch between a Suppresion Heavy with Bulletstorm and Shredder Heavyth Holo-targeting. Eventually the former got Psi powers though, so....

What do people think about bullet swarm vs holo targeting? I took swarm last time on the basis that hey, extra attack per round, but what with being in the process of whipping a few new scrubs into a vaguely useful state I'm wondering if the extra aim to the rest of the squad wouldn't be more helpful overall.

I find that choice pretty balanced. Since I usually take HEAT ammo, bullet swarm is fantastic against mech troops though.

I find holotargeting can be more useful in early game.

...Yeeeeah. After spending two hours on a UFO landing mission largely due to the novelty antics of Muffins the randomly-teleporting-from-the-other-end-of-the-ship-right-in-the-middle-of-my-squad Sectopod, I'll take bulletswarmkthxbai. Even without them annoyingly bugging out, those guys are chores.
