I hate that I have to pick between a med kit and grenade. Doesn't seem like I should have too

This is a conscious design decision that Solomon wanted to have. He liked the idea of having to make difficult choices and you can see it in this regard.

I agree it's a bit clumsy to wrap your head around it, but I can understand the reasoning for the decision and once I accepted that it is the case, it doesn't bother me as much. I find it similar to the Doom 3 flashlight, which is also something that annoyed a lot of gamers. I could recognize that they were making the gamer choose between having visibility or having firepower, which can add to the tension. In XCOM, if I could give all my guys the underlay for +2 HP and still get other stuff, it'd be a no brainer decision and just sort of becomes "obvious."

Ideally I would have preferred a lot of different underlays, a lot of different weapon mods, and a lot of different "general items" and then have to make those difficult choices there. But at that point it just becomes me saying "I would have loved more content!" haha.

Yeah I have debated whether or not to use the arc on assault or on the faster support as well. Tough choice IMO.

My support has medkits which are very, very handy (and later on you get another inventory slot with support, so I also put a SCOPE on him). My support class is very much a frontline fighter though. Gave him a plasma rifle and with double overwatch he can do some intense damage. I like setting him on overwatch, and then using flush to push the AI out and watching my support guy do 15-20 damage to that target.

XCom games should have at least 50 hours of content! LOL

LOL.  I have already put in 26 hours.

The replayability of games like these is usually pretty staggering haha.

Lets keep this on the topic of "OMGBBQ XCOM R0X0RS OUR B0X0RS" :P

They did action it up somewhat, in that people move more appropriately and you get the kill shots (which don't grow old IMO), but I think there's still copious amounts of tactical action.

HAHA fair point.

Note that the mechanics around LOS can be a little confusing at first, but once you figure it out (i.e. you can always see over "half cover" and you will always peek around the corner of "full cover") your ability to make better tactical choices will greatly improve I find.

I outright lost my first game so I guess I lost all of Earth :P

I had a few false starts, also on Ironman classic. So I am on Ironman Normal right now and it's a lot more tolerable hahahaha.

Yeah I haven't done Ironman yet. I get too attached to some of my units.

That's what I love about it. I get genuinely angry at the aliens for killing off my best guys. Or realizing that that Chryssalid only hit my best soldier for 6 hp instead of an instant killing in that terror mission and having me go OH THANK GOD!!!! Hahahaha.

Hahahaha.

I probably have had, oh, 10 or "bleeding out" instances and that is without the Officer School training. It doesn't happen a whole lot, but it does happen. Though I don't actually care to use the "revive" skill. I'm usually okay with them just "resting up" the rest of the mission and not being a target!

Improved medkit helps, and I find myself pretty much wearing ONLY Titan Armor because I value the HP more than anything haha. I should try ghost armor for a scout though.

Just bought this game (FINALLY! -_-) and I wanted to ask you guys something... what is the difference between different difficulties? Better AI, more HP, damage and accuracy for enemies? etc.

I'm not sure what differences there are in the tactical game.  I could see it being simple stuff like quantites of badguys and whatnot.

In the strategic game, you start with more money on easier difficulty setting, and get more resources per satellite, recruiting soldiers is cheaper, and so forth.

Just won Ironman Normal. The world stats I think are a bit bugged (or someone cheated), as the average money earned is over 300k, whereas I only earned 11k! Hahaha.

Though I was a bit slow on some of the intermediate plot objectives, I ended up finishing in 231 days. The average is 231.1 :P

All encounters really. There's a general flow to the game as in what enemies/tech/ships you'll encounter based on how far you are. But the actual alien encounters are randomly generated.

For example the game may decide on a certain day you'll have to pick between three alien attack sites to hit. The locations listed, the maps you fight on, the aliens present, and the rewards are a bit random.

There are also randomized requests countries make, as which countries the aliens are targeting.

There are specific non-random objectives you need to accomplish to make the main plot move forward, but the game is pretty open as to how/when you tackle them.

There's some minor map variation too.  While there are probably about 80 or so maps apparently (which isn't too bad, given that I just won the game and only did 33 battles), there are also variations, such as where ladders to rooftops are, where cars and other things like that are in city maps, etc.

On the tactical side, enemies will have more health and accuracy, and you characters will have less accuracy. Not sure about damage output of weapons, but the chance ratios get scewed.

I've seen the health increases.  Are you sure about less accuracy?

I do find morale is a much bigger concern in classic.

Eh, I wouldn't say that the developers were lazy nor even bought off. It just wasn't developed with any support for WinXP in mind so they wouldn't have bothered to do anything to ensure it ran, even if it was only a minimal amount of work.

It's more likely that they were oblivious to it rather than bribed or in some way willfully disabling it.

Gotta say, I'm a bit tired losing half my HP due to the magical ability of alien guns shooting at me with several walls or vehicals in the way making it physically Impossible for that to ever happen.

But on the other hand, I guess Squad Sight allows Snipers to pervert the laws of physics on a regular basis, so it's a trade off.

First thing I learned in the demo was that the shooting effects are purely for show.

When you're in cover, you're assumed to also be peeking around the corner (if there is one) that allows you (and enemies) to have LOS.

You can notice that as sometimes LOS disappears once the cover is destroyed.

The combat is entirely rules based.  So if LOS exists, the chance to hit is completely determined by the situation.  The World geometry itself does not provide any protection for either you or the aliens.  The protection comes purely from the to hit penalty being in "tall cover" and "short cover" provide (which can be doubled if you hunker down.

I plan on picking up a new HDD sometime in the next week or two, at which point I can then get started on my Lets Play of classic Ironman :)

I hope you'll forgive me for this as you are a mod and all but...

Holy. Sh!t.

How much damage that... thing deals?

A sizeable amount :D

I won't give too much more information than that, lest I spoil some of his surprises =]

Although in this situation I was able to destroy him before the end of the turn (and suppressed the muton that was off the screen to the north.

Though I did lose my awesome support (that had my medkits) on this mission.  She bled out and I was one turn too slow on killing the last boss in the control room of the UFO.  It was a mad dash to get there hahaha.

Those operatives you have up there, with the armor that has some green parts, is it the Titan?

Yes, though the "green parts" is actually because I have plasma weapons equipped. I noticed some of the trim changes depending on what type of weapon you are using.

What happens if you keep ignoring UFO attacks? Because um, I'm not strong enough and desperately trying to build a new line of fighters to handle them.

Any negatives to avoiding contact? Also, I lost Australia but I couldn't do anything about it. No missions were coming up for that region. Any possible way to get them back in the council?

Ignoring UFOs ups the panic level of the nation. If a country ends the month at max panic level, they withdraw. As far as I know, a withdrawn nation is gone for good.

Note that it's okay to lose at this game :P

"That's XCOM" hahaha.

I actually have never used ghost armor.

I have heard it's quite powerful, but only qualifies as medium armor (important for Assault bonus HP). Note that it still has the grappling hook.

Sometimes UFOs have ladders and stuff to get up on the roof. Maybe that was the case?

It wasn't an issue for me. It looked very much like a Large Scout UFO with some slight differences internally. Was able to capture the ethereal though \\m/

I suppressed the jebus out of the ethereal. And the muton beside it. The ethereal did some sort of psionic blast to eradicate the Muton I mind controlled XD

Also: This was fun.

Convinced me that the AI doesn't cheat by knowing where I am. It flew right over the truck and right beside the three guys it had no idea were there.
