I wasn't married to TUs, and I'm not sure about the base thing. One interesting thing is that your base location has an effect, which I think is neat.

I never really bought into the caricature argument, since i always sort of felt that the original was somewhat cartoony in this regard too (that hair!)

'That Hair!' will be included if you preorder the game. One of the bonuses is a soldier who looks like That Guy. And if you preorder from Steam they'll give you that hair in TF2 too.

I do love the choice of base location thing. I'll probably stick with US since I like the idea of having better aircraft...even though I'm not sure better aircraft will really matter much in the full game.

I don't really mind the lack of TUs. Hell, last time I played X-Com Apocalypse I used the real-time option for the battlescape the entire time and liked it too.

As for only having one base...I dunno. Guess I will miss designing various types of bases all around the globe.
Though I'll already be happy if the aliens at least try to assault your base regularly once you ****** them off enough.

Yup i'd like to see some defending action too. Even if it wont be our base, it can be some other placeson earth. Like holding an area for civilan evacuation or making a stand on some cultural building to raise a county s moral.

Really?
The Heavy looking like a big chunk of beef? The sniper being a think stick? Over-specilized?

If that isn't a caricature, I don't know what is.

When you use the words "thin stick" you're just using hyperbole. This female sniper (quickly loaded up the game) is still pretty darned big. It was more along the lines that the original game used caricatures as well.

The thing I noticed was that until you mentioned it, I hadn't even really noticed.

Yes, each classification of unit does have a unique look to them. Though I'm sure you can imagine that this doesn't just display an aesthetic and actually serves a functional purpose, right?

Actually the size is more based on gender and armor than the class itself. If the sniper is male (which the demo randomly determines) then he's the same size as the Heavy, just in slightly less bulky armor.

And nothing would stop a female from being a 'heavy' in the full game. But not possible in the demo since the heavy is the only set character.

I've been out of the loop with this game as of late. The last thing I read up on was the addition of multiplayer. I'm still looking forward to it though.

Last good UFO game was Aftermath imo. After that it sts gone downhill.

That was part of the UFO series rather than X-Com series. Aftermath, Afterlight and Aftershock were UFO titles. Enemy Unknown, Terror from the Deep, Apocalypse and the spin offs Interceptor and Enforcer were X-Com titles.

Personally I did not like the UFO series as much. There were many other similar titles too that were based on the original such as Extraterrestrials which generally I enjoyed and an new up and coming one being hopefully released around same time as the remake called Xenonuats. There is also an MMO one if I recall... I will see if I can find the link again.

I am looking forward to playing both Xenonauts and Enemy Unknown remake personally. I think they will both be good.

Cannot freaking wait for October 9th. I just hope multiple playthroughs are different enough to keep it fresh.

OR, of course, that they come out with a DLC/Expansion Pack a few months after launch, like they usually do(Firaxis that is)

Anyone gonna be game for PS3 multiplayer?

Wish My PC could handle it... but sadly I'm not in the mood to drop scratch on a new Graphics Card, so PS3 it is... at least until I DO upgrade my card.

You should try the PC demo first. I was getting 60fps at max settings with an old HD 5770.

Hah, I don't consider the 5xxx series to be "old" cards in terms of their capabilities.

I still have a 5850 and there aren't any games that force me to drop down my graphics settings. Though I'm also no longer a graphics junkie which might help.

Well, they do have the distinction of being directly based on the scrapped X-COM: Genesis in both story and gameplay...

I took look at the Genesis one, never played it so did not have an opinion of it. I see what you mean about being similar to the UFO series though. Then again like I said I did not like the UFO series as much as the released X-Com titles so I can't say I am that disappointed in Genesis getting cancelled. Well thats not 100% true, I did not enjoy interceptor or Enforcer either.

The heck with it, I'll probably end up per-ordering it over the weekend-hopefully if it sells well enough, and gets enough new blood into the series they devs will open the strategic end up a bit in later releases. (On a side note: I consider anything post terror from the deep ****** poor attempts at cash ins or cop-outs)

Why do I even hesitate? I still remember my 1st successful play-through of the original.

Had everything pretty much researched to go hit the alien menace hard, but needed a alien leader or high ranking officer and.....'convince' it to tell me the location of their HQ in the Sol system. Could not find one to save my life-needed to find an alien FOB planetside, and none could be found.

I ended up having to make a Churchill decision and let the enemy terrorize a major metropolitan area. Then, using what little E-115 I had left, tail it with a homegrown saucer design half across the globe. I thought "What, are they in the middle of the damn ocean?" Nope, thing slowed down and disappeared down south....Waaaay down south. Turns out the sneaky bastards had hold up in Antarctica.

Running desperately low on E-115, I had to transfer my vet soldiers to the secondary base I had my old transport in, and head out without the full crew/assets I was used to due to the more limited cargo capacity of the old Russian built VTOL I was forced to bring out of retirement.

Lost half my squad, but got the job done and eventually won on that play-through.

Those kinds of moments are just not going to happen (as far as I can tell) beyond some scripted sequence that will play out the same time, every time. That's why I hesitate.

SOON.

4 DAYS AS A MATTER OF FACT(Well, for my part of the world...)

I'm pumped, and think this looks like GOTY material, but for some reason, I feel it will bomb at retail and not get all that many awards...

As a ground rule of sorts, if  playable character in your game looks like it belongs to Gears of War series, it is a very good idea to immediately redisgn  as much of your graphics as you possibly can.

I know very little of this game, loved the original Xcom though. Based on videos this looks much like one would imagine from Xbox version of Xcom. I'd love it if this game proves to be good though.

Ha... judging by the Eurogamer review not getting the game before the 12th is at least good for something: non stop gaming on the weekend!

I don't like RTS-strategy games so I won't be buying X-com enemy unknown.
