Though had a problem starting it as an alien abduction was happening at about the same time and the game could freeze up in the resulting confusion.
Up to level 2 MEC troopers (the hard part is keeping them alive)

The vastly improved variety in terms of maps and missions was definitely the best thing about EW. I had a blast with Enemy Unknown, but EW is just so much better in that department it's not even funny.
The genetic enhancements and especially the MEC troopers were lots of fun and brought some new fun elements to putting together the squad of my dreams. Especially with the Second Wave options that helped making the soldiers more unique it was was even more fun watching them grow stronger, and even worse losing them.
Some of the class abilities of the different soldier types have been revamped (or so I believe), and I'd say they are mostly improvements. For example: the sniper's team sight (?) ability still allows the sniper to hit enemies only his squadmates can see, but unless he also uses his headshot ability he can't score critical hits this way.
The two new alien types were nice, but I'd have liked more where they came from, at least 1-2 further additions to the alien army.
The Exalt storyline and missions were a good addition to the basic campaign, but I felt the conclusion to it was a little underwhelming. Missed opportunity on not having something like an "Illusive Man" counterpart to the player's XCom Commander.
New items were solid additions, although I have to admit that, for example, I rarely used any of the new grenades. The need for them might be different on higher difficulties.
Finally, as far as my experience goes, they got rid of most of the more annoying and persistent bugs that haunted EU. No more Mutons teleporting behind my lines one-shotting my sniper etc. The game did crash three or four times (got stuck in an enemy turn, mainly on Exalt missions), but that was always when I'd already played a loooong time.
Final verdict: if you loved XCOM EU you'll love the experience this expansion provides just as much or even more. Although all changes and additions are for the better at some points I do wish there were more. Still a worthy follow-up to one of my favourite games of 2012, and even better suited to keep me addicted for quite a while.

I'm basically finished with my first playthrough by now. It was a good experience, all in all.

I agree with all of your points, I have just finished a playthough on Classic not to long ago.
Enemy Within is an excellent addition to any stategy gamers collection.
My only hope is that there are more expansions like this in the future.
I would love to take the fight under the ocean, or out to Mars, and I would really love it if some form of co-op/team battle (2-4 players) was added; would make an already amazing game even more awesome (IMO).

Just completed my first covert op

That happened to me on one playthrough that I had to scrap and on another the file was corrupted on my first mission against sectopods (3 in one ship plus mechtoids and commanders!). Still saw the new storylines to an end and they were okay, although on final EXALT mission the AI went really dumb (playing on normal difficulty though) and refused to shoot at me when I was in plain sight. Sectopods have been buffed to take half damage from all sources so that'll make you cry at night.

Just finally got around to playing this game about a week ago (and absolutely loving it). Just curious, but has there been any word about another potential expansion down the line? Or is Enemy Within the final say on XCOM?

I would guess final say. I believe the studio is working on the new Civilization game at this point.
Although that's not to say that there wont be a sequel in the future.

Civilization V: BNW is perfect in any sense. My assumption is that the devs are working on Civilization IV formula (spam units) to please their other fans.

Well the next one is called Beyond Earth and is going to be a bit more like Alpha Centauri from the looks of it.

I mean the next project after the Beyond Earth. Beyond Earth seemed mostly finished in E3.
