As a ground rule of sorts, if  playable character in your game looks like it belongs to Gears of War series, it is a very good idea to immediately redisgn  as much of your graphics as you possibly can.

I know very little of this game, loved the original Xcom though. Based on videos this looks much like one would imagine from Xbox version of Xcom. I'd love it if this game proves to be good though.

I think there's an old saying about assumptions based on total ignorance... think it was "Oh, you don't know much about the game and are basing your opinion on looks alone? You must be the life of the party." Or something similar... IDK.

Picking it up tomorrow at 10am, when the store opens, and then I shall be dead to the world.

Oh right. It's coming out tomorrow in North America right?

I'm trying to figure out if I'll have to disappear from this thread then. On the other hand... it's a remake. There is not that much that people could spoiler for me.

Nope, not butthurt, just pointing out a flaw with the line of thinking. Say and do whatever you want, I don't really care.

Cool, so is it like Final Fantasy Tactics then?

That's a decent enough way of looking at it, from the combat perspective. You'll maneuver your troops around and try to flank the opponents to do bonus damage/bonus chance to hit, a lot like FFT.

This isn't a spoiler, just friendly tip;

DO NOT SET YOUR XCOM BASE IN SOUTH AMERICA.

Yes, the bonus is really good, but if you get full satalite coverage over a continent, you are granted the Base Bonus as a freebie, and S. America only has 2 Regions.

So 2 Satalites = Instant Autopsies and Interrogations REALLY EARLY IN THE GAME, in addition to the bonus provided by the continent you chose as your base.

So who exactly do you play as in the game? Or is there really no protagonist, other that basically yourself as the player?

It's not an RPG in that sense. You play a faceless entity that controls the XCOM initiative. Base building as well as giving orders to your soldiers in the field.

BTW this game is absurd fun and I am loving the difficulty (playing classic Ironman)

Two catastrophic mission failures. One where I lost a squad of 5 rookies, and one where I lost 3 vets and had to evacuate BARELY (with a Chryssalid breathing down my neck) with a squaddie and my Captain barely surviving.

I lost a classic ironman run already due to being unable to capture any ufos, aside from the first one I downed, as well as running out of money. Thin Men and their poison were my bane and then the Muton showed up to put me to bed. The final straw was losing all of my ranked soldiers. After that, my squad of four rookies would continuously fall against hordes of 10-12 aliens. I did have one chance to try and hold on to the game when my squad of rookies had managed to kill 11 of the 12 aliens at a landed ufo site, but it came down to my last remaining rookie and the drone/controlling entity in the ufo. Its first shot ended that chance though.

HAHA crazy.

classic Ironman? Or Impossible? I haven't run out of money and haven't had much issue shooting down ufos. I have shot down 4 (out of 4), though the large one did take out an interceptor as well.

My issue is I NEED an engineer! I can't build a workshop yet. All these researched goodies but no way to build them :(

It was on classic, although after the first couple of missions, all of the soldiers I recruited had more base HP than the ones I started with. It made me wonder if the game's difficulty was reset at some point, but, after double-checking, I saw it was still set to classic in-game.

I didn't have trouble with engineers since my base was in Asia, plus I took the missions that offered engineers as rewards. Maybe it was because I had so many options that I ended up spending all of my funds on every new thing that came up. It didn't help that I couldn't capture any more ufos for alien alloy. I had the engineers, but not the materials.

Hahaha. My engineer luck has been putrid. Has never come up once for a reward :(

Strange you aren't seeing engineers. Every time I have to pick between which town to save, one gives cash, one gives engineers, and one gives scientists.

But loving the game so far. Only had it a day and already put in an absurd amount of time into it. Just pushes my buttons.

Oh and tip on Thin Man poison that took me forever to realize. If you're carrying a medkit, you're immune to it. Can run right into through poison clouds no problem.

This game is so amazing with the depth it has.

In an industry where they have so many shooters on the market, it's a refreshing change of pace game.

I actually played the demo on PS3 and PC and I'm absolutely surprised at how well it plays on consoles. Very good job streamlining the controls. Finally a strategy game worth a damn on console. However, I think I'll go with the PC version.
