Has anyone played this on 360?

I've only seen YouTube gameplay footage, and small bits of what's in this topic. I'm a bit on the fence whether to get it. While I'll always respect games from Firaxis, I have a hard time getting into that type of game. It feels like there's a more significant storyline this round with X-COM, so I'm sort of eyeing it at the moment.

SO... for some reason, I though that XCom was a PC exclusive, but I see its actually out on consoles as well.

Since I am one of those pond scum who only plays games these days on console (I know, the shame... the HORROR!), has anyone played this on 360? And can anyone comment if it is a decent port, or should this have stayed on the PC only?

I'm playing it on XBOX, and am having no problem. Since I don't have a gaming computer, it's definitely for the best.

I don't feel there's any real let-down for playing on the console (all I occassionally see is a lag in the resolution of the earth image, but it's minor), and if you browse the FireAxis XCOM forums you'll see a lot of people complain that it's too much geared towards consoles as opposed to PC bonanzas.

Overall, the controls are easy to use, the interface is simple enough without infringing on strategy, and it's more than enjoyable.

This seems encouraging. I'm also playing mostly on Xbox nowadays and was considering getting this game for Christmas or something.

No if anything, the only complaint I have about the game (and its not a major one) is that the interface design is very console-ish. It should play the same, if not better, on the Xbox.

Well, if 'or something' means sooner, I'd recomment 'or something.'

The difficulty system is pretty well balanced, in that you'll always be able to find a difficulty that will meet your abilities. The hardest modes are super-hard, the easy modes are easy, and you can gradually escalate your experience.

There are just sooo many games coming out, I have to think of my poor wallet! :P

But I have to say that I'm intrigued by this game (never played XCOM before, mostly because I was in elementary school at the time) and I do love a challenge. Damn, I'm already leaning towards "or something". My poor wallet.

Am I alone in wishing I could zoom in on the various rooms in my base? They look so detailed and I want to get up close and watch my crew at work in the different environments. I hate that the camera position is stuck so far away.

Yeah not a fan of the camera controls at all. Seems like it was designed for controller bumper buttons. I would love a real zoom in, both on base and maps. And I'd also love to shut the game from having any auto controls over the camera.

On most maps its not a big deal, but now that I'm raiding the larger UFOs, it keeps flipping the camera to the roof of the ship when my team's inside of it, so I have to adjust my camera after every single action. Really gets annoying when trying to plan strategy.

I noticed the same thing in my late game and it's very annoying.  Hopefully camera tweaks are done in the form of patches.   I'm not sure how Firaxis has been in the past with patching their games.

Well they did a 1.8gig patch yesterday, so that was pretty quick. Didn't fix camera issues for me, but did do other stuff.

I was extremely excited about the new XCOM since it was first announced, and finally tried out the demo yesterday. And I really shouldn't have. Realistically I have neither the time nor the money (thanks, Project Eternity) for the game right now, but it should be in my mail tomorrow. Guess I'll have to... adjust my plans for the weekend.

I haven't tested yet, but apparently you can now zoom in on the various rooms in your base!  I was just asking for this a few hours ago!

Playing on the 360. They've cut out a lot of stuff. Some of it works -Not having to buy clips for rifles - some of it doesn't - only being able to add one non-gun thing to your squadmates, I hate that I have to pick between a med kit and grenade. Doesn't seem like I should have too. Other than that the mechanics are all there. I though the "two actions" thing would bother me more as opposed to time units but it really doesn't. The "action camera" also isn't as annoying as I first feared.

In talking with some guys that worked on ME, he says that there are definitely some GUI quirks that seem to be a symptom for how UE deals with their scaleform meaning some stuff is surprisingly rigid and difficult to adjust for platform specific reasons.

I have no issues with the control scheme for the game on PC, but I do feel it's clear that there's console support in how the systems work.  The biggest advantage the PC has for the core GUI is that it circumvents some of the rigidity by allowing keyboard shortcuts.

I'd be very surprised if anyone found the game clunky or unintuitive on the console.

Thanks Allan.

Hmmm. If Dishonored winds up not engaging me anymore after this weekend, I'll have to switch out for XCom. Of course, Borderlands 2 is still top of my list, but Gamefly has been out of stock for almost a month now, something I've never seen (which only makes me more excited to get my hands on it).

This is a conscious design decision that Solomon wanted to have. He liked the idea of having to make difficult choices and you can see it in this regard.

I agree it's a bit clumsy to wrap your head around it, but I can understand the reasoning for the decision and once I accepted that it is the case, it doesn't bother me as much. I find it similar to the Doom 3 flashlight, which is also something that annoyed a lot of gamers. I could recognize that they were making the gamer choose between having visibility or having firepower, which can add to the tension. In XCOM, if I could give all my guys the underlay for +2 HP and still get other stuff, it'd be a no brainer decision and just sort of becomes "obvious."

Ideally I would have preferred a lot of different underlays, a lot of different weapon mods, and a lot of different "general items" and then have to make those difficult choices there. But at that point it just becomes me saying "I would have loved more content!" haha.

XCom games should have at least 50 hours of content! LOL

Then let me be an exception. Image IPB

While I'm enjoying the game, the controls feel extremely clunky to me on XBox. My biggest issue is panning and rotating the camera, and having to use the right trigger to select an option during combat. It's weird. And it just feels dated to me. Even while in the base, moving around, building things, and making choices seem convoluted. It probably doesn't help that I'm a web UI designer IRL...and tend to be a bit critical in that regard.

I would speculate that the clunkiness exists on all platforms.

That said, I'm having a lot of fun, which really is my most important criteria.

If I wasn't on a one-game-a-month limit I would've bought this by now.

Its worth pointing out that the only unit that really has to make a choice between the Med Kit and something else, doesn't have to make that choice in the long run. The Support unit automatically gets the ability to equip two items once they rank up a bit.

The Arc Thrower gets more functionality than an omni tool after much research, which makes it a stellar choice for your Support member's second slot.

The other classes get stuck with one, but some can learn abilities that get more use out of that slot. For example, the Heavy being able to carry more grenades.

You give your arc thrower to your support class? is that becuase of the upgrade to have it repair the S.H.I.V?
I feel its safer with the assualt class myself. there up on the front lines anyway.
