Does it lose me a man card to say I was very near tears just at the part in ME3 where Shepard meets the boy in the ventilation duct? The music was just so perfect...

The whole "Mentor-Student"/"Father-Son" relation or anything similar has always been my weak spot, though. It's what had me bawling at The Road, near tears at the third Star Wars prequel ending, and almost got me at the aforementioned ME3 scene. Odd, now that I think about it.

But other than that, I very rarely cry at anything. ME3 could make me quite sad, but it'll have to go all out to bring tears to my eyes. Only other game I've every cried at was... hm, not since the ending of Planescape: Torment, I think.

 I don't know, the only thing in a video game that made me all that sad was E-102's campaign in Sonic Adventure. Depending on your point of view, the e-100 series robots were either animals that were brainwashed and transformed, or robots powered by the lifeforce of captured animals.  But either way, being forced to fight his family, and choosing to end his own life was powerful stuff.  I think that the robots being very unexpressive was a large part of it as well.  They say that if a character cries, you don't have to cry for them.

I doubt that Bioware will go this route, and create a tragic villain type reaper, but who knows, maybe they'll surprise me and think of something even more soul crushing.

Think about indoctrination this way: your love interest has been corrupted by the Reapers and is holding a gun to your head. You try talking them down, and they're trying to resist it, but it's not working; the control is too strong, no matter how many Charm or Intimidate options you attempt. And they're telling you they love you, that they want you to kill them, and they can't lower their weapon, and you have to make the choice whether to shoot them or not.

Then before you can do anything, one of your other party members kills them instead to save you. THAT would be heart wrenching. Bonus tear jerker points if it's a competing love interest who pulls the trigger. Or if it's Ashley who gets indoctrinated...and Wrex who shoots her.

Man they already did that in Prey - turn your GF into an alien/husk/whatever and you have to fight them. and then when you beat em, with their last shred of humanity beg you to end their suffering. YAWN. been done to DEATH. but at least in PREY you had to use a Wrench to end her ha ha :happy:

Never, ever should you be condemned for feeling sorrow for a child. Anyone who would mock you for that has no true concept of human pain.

Tali's shaking hand reaches to her other hand as she tries to pull the glove off but she's so weak, she's slipping. Shep reaches to her hand and rips the suit at the hand showing her little hand as it reaches up and very lightly lays on sheps cheek as she smiles. "Oh my (whatever the quarian word for love is), shh shh, we'll see each other again. Now go save the universe my soldier, that's a order Commander." Tali says as both of them have tears on their face.

Shep leans down and kisses her as she slowly slips off to death. Shep stands whipping tears from his face as he runs his hand over her face closing her eyes as it shows her face once more with a smile on her face. Shep picks her limp body up in his arms as he walks through a crap storm of bullets flying past his head as Garrus and Vega cover you as you walk to the shuttle not caring of the bullets flying past his head. As they make it to the shuttle and it flies back to the normandy it shows Shep sitting on the bench in the shuttle alone with his head hung over his lovers body in his arms.

Okay, honestly, this scenario was loaded with ******. I don't know if it was the general 'love story' vibe that made my guts churn, or the image of Tali loosing silent tears and rubbing Shepard's face when she should be shrieking in agony as her digestive juices spill all over her, but I couldn't take this seriously. I found myself wondering more about what the chemical composition of quarian digestive juices should be rather than Tali dying (which, admittedtly, would be quite a gut punch to me. I do like her!).
I dunno, maybe I'm just too jaded after years of video game tragedy to find the sorrow in something like this.
I see the humour in it, though.

Will we see civilians lying dead in the street? Will we see schools blown open with the little bodies still inside? Will we watch as entire cities are laid to waste? Will we see the haunted expressions of the refugees as they stream from some forgotten town or city where decent people once lived carrying everything that they own with them? Will we see the dead laying by the side of the road as a stream of silent people walk by us like ghosts? Will we witness a child trying to awaken her dead mother, not realizing why she won't get up? Will we be forced to call down fire on the innocent in order to win a battle? Will we have to do that to a friend or our LI?

Y'know, I do wish that an M rated game would actually live up to its rating and include something like this. Sadly, I haven't seen it outside a few ****** video games (ACE combat and Front mission series come to mind).
Must be a cultural thing, though if anyone knows of a Western or European game that does something like this (not necessarily an RPG), please point me to it.

yeh those were pretty sad.

I don't really cry from games though.  I cried in Castaway when Wilson floated off....

I imagine if Garrus and Ashley die trying to save my shep i might get choked up, but it would have to be done pretty well.

I cried when Vegeta died in DBZ for the first time.

I cried at the end of the last Harry Potter book.

I cried at the end of Inception....But If Garrus dies or get indoctrinated...

I'm going to have an issue with that.

The main thing that would make me cry would be a sadistic choice. Like Heavy Rain sadistic. I assume Bioware will probably go this route for the love interests, which can be used effectively. However it all depends on how it's done, and if Shepard's voice actor will actually properly show emotion.

I think at this point any non-cheesy dramatic death will pretty much make me cry. Unless it's Jacob or something. lol. But if something horrible happens to Anderson or Garrus or Tali I'm going to be a wailing wibbly puddle. I've only cried at video games a few times, but I remember how intense I was at the end of ME2 trying to keep everyone alive (and I did) so in ME3 I'm probably going to be the same way... and if I fail to keep one of my favorite characters alive despite my best efforts, I can see myself breaking. Especially since I'll probably vow to myself to not start over or load a previous save during my first ME3 playthrough.

For the record, I've cried at Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts II (happy tears at the ending though), Shadow of the Colossus, The World Ends With You (more happy tears), Persona 4, and probably a couple of more that I don't remember.

For me personally here is a scenario that would make me sad:

My Shepherd has the Earthborn background, so seeing either at the beginning of the game or the ending of the game a completely decimated Earth, he just sadly sighs and starts quoting Robert A. Heinlein's "The Green Hills of Earth", knowing that it will never, ever be again *either in his lifetime or forever*.

"Let the sweet fresh breezes heal me
As they rove around the girth
Of our lovely mother planet
Of the cool, green hills of Earth.

We've tried each spinning space mote
And reckoned its true worth:
Take us back again to the homes of men
On the cool, green hills of Earth.

The arching sky is calling
Spacemen back to their trade.
ALL HANDS! STAND BY! FREE FALLING!
And the lights below us fade.

Out ride the sons of Terra,
Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps a race of Earthmen,

I see no reason to cry at all . Solid Snake suffering at the end of MGS 4 made me feel emotion for him . in ME only the treatment of the krogans have gotten any emotion from me

Shepard's death might create some 'eyeball sweat' if done right.

I wouldn't say it is my greatest fear though. I think the ideal ending of Mass Effect 3 should be a mix of tragedy and triumph.

Now before someone counters with a "you want to remove player choice herr derr" argument, let met preemptively state that I think there should be multiple endings. In fact the more variables, the better. I just think that the best possible ending as far as the galaxy goes, should require some 'sacrifice' on the part of Shepard and his team.
