Suggestion: Project News Thread?

It occurred to me, following on from one of the BG2R's recent Sunday Updates, that the community is still quite active ... and yet most of that activity is entirely invisible anyone just joining the community, or for that matter, to anyone outside a given modder's/team's friends list or subscribers.

This may be partly due to the fact that it is now so easy to set up a blog, CMS, forum, etc. that many modders and mod teams have (understandably) elected to do so over the BSN equivalents. They may have created a BSN project but it may be (understandably) private and/or rarely updated. Even those teams who make a special effort to create and update a public BSN group, project or blog it only reaches a limited audience: people on their friends list or who have subscribed to their project, etc.

I think we find a way to let those people who are joining (or perhaps even returning to) our community that it is still very much alive and kicking. A simple solution might be to create some sort of Project News aggregation thread in here in the general discussion forum. That way we could collate theadlines from the more active projects BG2R, Dark Times/Hidden CircleRose of Eternity, Shattered War, Sappho's Daughters, etc. along with anything else of interest and present it in a weekly post.

Let me know what you think of this suggestion or if you have any other ideas about how to showcase all the work that is actually going on in our community.

EDIT1: added links
EDIT2: copy editing

We could also highlight hot topics or submission to DA Nexus which would keep people (like me) who don't habitually visit that site up-to-date and make new modders aware it.

I'd support that idea, being new myself its hard to tell if people with similar interests are still around or whether they just dropped off the radar. Keep the game love alive.

I think your observation is spot-on, Sunjammer - it would be great to have a way to keep track of modders and other toolset tinkerers and machinima folk. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help? =)

So I guess the next step is to hammer out the specifics. I'll throw up my thought but these are by no means final so please feel free to suggest additions and/or alternatives.

Organisation: collating and discussing content and preparing posts could be done in the Friendly Toolset Initiative group. Anyone can contribute but there should be two or three permanent reporters with set areas of responsibility to ensure things get done.

Timing: ideally it should be weekly provided we can find enough content. I want to avoid clashing wiith BG2R's Sunday Update so perhaps every Wednesday in honourof the old BioWare Wednesdays (for those of us old enough to remember them).

Content: essentially we can include anything provided it is DA modding related however as a minimum I suggest:
* Highlights from external sites (BG2R, Rose of Eternity, Shattered War, etc.)
* Highlights from prominent BSN groups and project
* Highlights from the BSN Toolset forum
* Highlights from DA Toolset Wiki
* Highlights from DA Nexus
* A "mod of the week" or "article of the week" spot

Let me know what you guys think and/or what you guys would like to see.

I like this idea. I thought I was one of only a dozen people sill interested in DAO. Then when I want to start making a module I found other people. It's nice. :P

I've come to the Dragon Age games only very recently but the sort of detail, thought and dedication I've seen in the mods available on this and other sites is quite inspirational.

Unfortunately most of the mods I've found of great interest are often more than a year old with no visible updates, so the idea of a collation thread is extremely appealing.

And if I ever take the plunge to try and learn the toolset enough to make my own modules... Well, it's nice to know there's a helpful and knowledgable crowd of friendly people still interested in the game. :)

OH someone is thinking of starting a module, if so count me in, I along with someone else began a module, but never got far and I really like DAO!

Someone might be thinking of starting a module but that's not what this thread is about I am afraid. This thread was started to discuss how we could ensure raise the profile of the people and groups that were still working on modding DAO. My idea was to highligt their bloging, tweeting, posting, etc. in a regularly updated thread.

I had hoped to get things organised for this week but I was "dragged" away to go snowboarding: hopefully next week things will become clearer.

I think it would be an idea to follow some of the Machinima projects that are going on as well... there are a few projects around in the community that would probably benefit from having a bit more coverage. I know that may not count as strictly modding but they are still fellow toolset tinkerers.  Anything that raises the profile of the DA toolset and the wonderful creativity of people who use it can only be a good thing, right? :wizard:

I've created a new Dragon Age Modders' Weekly Digest project and assigned it to the Dragon Age Friendly Toolset Initiative group. The project should be open to all registered owners but you migh have to join DAFTI before you can see it (I've never quite worked out how these groups work).
