I always felt that Ben Kuchera at Ars Technica was a straight shooter.  Though now he has left for the growing Penny Arcade empire, and I am not sure how his format is going to carry over there.

...  It would be like Roger Ebert reviewing a movie he directed.  Why would anyone want to listen to what he has to say about his own movie when he dons his professional critics cap after he just took of his director's cap?  He has no objective viewpoint at that stage because it's his work.

It's funny that you mention that, because I think Roger Ebert actually co-wrote with a director of a film, back in the 70s, while he was still a Film Critic.  I think the film was The Valley of the Dolls or something to that effect.

As far as him reviewing his own work; that I do not know.

EDIT: Google is my friend... from the suntimes newspaper website.

Ebert's Note: "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls,"
a movie for whichI wrote the screenplay in 1969, has over the years
become a cult film. Although it would not be appropriate for me to
review it or give it a star rating
, I offer the following observations
written for Film Comment magazine on the occasion of the movie's 10th
anniversary in 1980.

I like that you posted this.  If people didn't think the response towards the question of ethics didn't have any merit, this most certainly gives it more weight.

I don't want to sound cynical but the entire mainstream gaming press is a joke. Talk of ethics is hilarious. Reviews for most of the games by the big publishers are essentially written by the publishers themselves. The only real opinion outlets have are scores. Great recent example is ign's review (and video review) of FFXIII-2. They gush about the game then give it an 8.
I understand the concern about Chobot and quite honestly seeing her in the game made me *rolleyes* a little but in terms of gaming media ethics its small potatoes.

And this is largely why I feel well-crafted demos need to be utilized.  If it's known that people take gaming press reviews with a grain of salt, then what exactly is the worth of the review?  It becomes a system where people are paid for their unneeded opinions which isn't a half-bad gig when you think about it.  It's just like youtube where people put up stupid videos to generate followers all so google can pay them with the advertising they put up before the videos are viewed.

Right now, games are sold mostly on word of mouth; but someone needs to be the guinea pig.  Case in point: I've read some of the reviews for Alpha Protocol by "professional" reviewers.  I bought Alpha Protocol on the basis that people on this board championed it.  I was a bit pissed off when I realized I paid more for it than I needed to...initially, but was happy with the purchase nonetheless because of the use I got out of it.  Four back-to-back playthroughs I was working on a fifth before I stopped.  Not because I got bored, but I had it in mind to do another Mass Effect run with a new character.

Jessica isn't going to be reviewing the game, so it does not have any merit.

She did a story on the game before she was revealed as a cast member.

If she was to talk about ME3 at all she should have done so with the knowledge that she's a member of the cast and not in a journalistic capacity (or at all if they were keeping it secret).  So it does have merit regardless of whether she reviews it or not because someone at G4 will review it and grade it.

If I have to make it clearer (not implying anything with that statement): Believe it or not, that video that I linked to is selling ME3.  Mentioning the "boomstick" easter egg (I don't think we got that before) is another selling point for ME3 on Xbox 360 with Kinect.  So it is a marketing video for a game Chobot's in that she's revealing with her journalistic cap on, on the very network that she works for and everyone expects to review ME3.  If they lowball ME3 people will say they're trying to give the impression that they're being fair and it'll hurt their relationship with Bioware/EA.  If they rate it too high people will call b.s. and say they're biased.

Right now, I'm wondering if Gatt9 posted in this thread yet because this reveal speaks to a lot of what he was saying about companies buying reviews.

Just caught up with all the vids after hearing something about vega pounding shepard's arse. I couldn't find a thread on this I hope it's Ok.

I can't put my finger on why or what, but is it just me or does something about the voice acting or lip synching seem a little off on James and Jeff? Did Freddie voice him in the leak?

I think this is covered but can't those two spar with gloves? Geez.

I loledol at Jessica Chobot being hired. Not sure why, good for her.

Sneak peak at Gingershep and her lovely new do. Does this cover the infamous "Femshep trailer"?

Keith David still being a legend.

Seth and Tricia sure are seen together alot aren't they?

Seriously though, I wonder if Bioware has considered that they may have tripped into an ethnics violation issue with hiring of Chobot. Even if it's a small part, the fact is that they hired a gaming reporter for a game makes it look like they're "buying" their way to a perfect score, even if that's not the intent. Someone didn't think this through.

You're not the only one who thinks that.

'EA and G4 TV's Mass Effect 3 Ethics Issue'
http://worthplaying....itorials/84961/

"While this is no doubt great news for Chobot, as she's getting a chance to contribute to a top-tier video game from one of her favorite developers, the way the announcement was handled presents a bit of an ethical quandary for both EA and G4 TV.

Why?

Because a mere two weeks ago, G4 TV had Chobot previewing Mass Effect 3 in her capacity as a journalist.
No matter how you slice it, this looks bad."

Who really gives a ****?  Seriously?  Talk about nitpicking, here.  What about news media who make appearances in movies?

People who worry about this stuff need to get out more.

Loved the video, but I do have two nitpicky things that are bugging me. First, the new journalists' dress. She should have some sort of sleeve, or she should be wearing pants. The tanktop looks strange as a dress.
Second, Vega's neck is very thick. It's weird.

Those things aside, the cast is looking good so far. Aside from a spoiler I heard recently, and the lack of a Steam release, I'm pretty excited!

Also considered a violation of ethics.  CNN completely rewrote its policies on the matter after all of the flack they got for Contact.  There is a reason that when you see news people in the movies these days, it is almost always from Fox.

She's a gaming reporter/host, not an investigative jounalist or a war correspondent here.  There is no such thing as a code of ethics for reporting in the gaming industry, period.  That's because no one really cares and no one can actually be harmed by false info save for wasting 60 bucks on a game.  All kinds of reporters from NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX and others have appeared in cameos playing themselves to give "realism" to a news reports in the movies.  Your argument is like saying entertainment reporters must not socially chat or get close to celebrities because it's "against a code of ethics."  That would be silly.  I love how people try to apply actual serious journalism to the gaming industry when they don't even hold the movie industry to the same standards.

For all its success, gaming isn't that big of a deal in the grand sceme of things.  It's about entertainment.  I will save my breath for bias reporters and ethics when it actually comes to something important (investigations, politics, political curruption, corporate curruption, elections etc.).  In this case I could care less if Chobot got the part in return for positive reviews for all Bioware's games for all time. It just doesn't matter...   at all.

I also can't remember the last time I made a decision based off a reviews let alone one single reviewer.

Glad your (mostly) liking the video. I do think the cast is pretty damned fine and they all do a great job in ME3.

I've loved Martin Sheen ever since Apocalypse Now and I've said before that The Illusive Man is my favorite character across all 3 games.

I would follow Keith David into battle just to listen to him shout orders at me. Forget the fact that he was Childs or that he fought Roddy Piper in the alley. Anderson is THE man. - 1

I got to meet and talk to Jennifer Hale at SDCC and PAX last year. She is possibly the most charming and friendly actor I've ever had the pleasure to meet. Plus, when I met her at PAX after SDCC, she remembered who I was which inflated my ego 10 points that day. - 2

Let me tell you my Ali Hillis story. She was at SDCC and did a signing on our stage for fans. Eventually here handler (an agent, friend or someone) had to remind her she was late for an appointment and she had to go immediately. As she was leaving, a fan in a Liara costume was talking to me and Ali stopped and came over exclaiming how great it was to see her character. When her handler reminded her she was late, she said "but this is ME, I have to get some pictures" - 3 and she took the time to have pictures taken with the Liara fan and signed some dedictaed autographs to her on the way out. It isn't every celebrity that would take the time to appreciate a fan like that.

I know there are still people who just don't "get" James Vega. All I'll say is wait till you actually meet him. Freedie Prinz Jr will change your mind. - 4

Jessica Chobot is a Mass Effect fan and has been since the first game. - 5 I'm glad they used her not only because she does a great job in the role, but someday I may get to meet her now.

So many awsome cast members. Seth Green/Joker, Tricia Helfer/Edi, Carrie- Ann Moss/Aria, etc.

1. you speak the truth. David Anderson is awesome. I am hoping above hope he plays Anderson in the movie if it doesn't end up in development hell

2. Ha! awesome. I've liked Hale's work ever since Knights of the Old Republic, Bastila Shan was my favorite character, took her everywhere, was upset when she got captured and I always go DS so i dont have to risk killing her. On second thought, it's also because I am evil

3. Sweet. Good to know her success hasn't clouded her mind or swelled her head.

4. I think Vega is going to be a great character. I mean his backstory includes him getting so aggitated by anti-Shepard propaganda in ME: Conviction that he "calmly" gets up and rips a TV/Video board off a wall and pays for the damage before getting in a fight with the bar patrons.

5. I agree. People that are saying Chobot is fanservice/the Jerseyshorization of Mass Effect ("Shore Effect" as it were) are making snap judgements based on insufficient evidence. And I think Khalisah al-Jilani is familiar enough with that to explain:

Well I never trusted an IGN review since that avatar tv series review fiasco anyways. I do find it a shame that female game journalists that end up in the industry only do so mostly because of their sexuality, and chobot might be the most high profile exploitation of them all.

I can't judge the character yet, but her appearance in definitely isn't a positive one in my eyes, and is further making me question bioware's art direction lately. All of their character designs have been emphasizing "sexy" (which I disagree with for various reasons) and in my opinion I think they are failing at achieving anything beyond superficial.

Thank god bioware is great when it comes to character writing though. Their last saving grace of an industry filled with the "chainmail" bikini mentality.

Also disappointed in the way Allers looks. I admit I was a naughty person that read through the script, and she seemed to carry more like a professional reporter. Sexy but strong and demanding.

Her picture in the OP makes her look more like a lanky college girl.

Agreed entirely. Gaming media is rarely what one would call "honest." I don't want to name names (mostly because I didn't care enough to bother to remember), but I recall recently reading through one of the major game publications and noticings that the lowest rated game (out of 10) in the entire magazine was a 6. The game was the kind of gutter trash that gets pumped out in a couple weeks and has zero quality control or testing and was practically unplayable. The purpose of these magazine is to sell games. Thus giving an entirely  negative review is sort of out of the question. Granted there are some with some integrity and don't do this as much... but that's the exception, not the rule.

That said, after having watched Chobot's segement on the kinect, it was hardly one in which journalistic integrity could be questioned. She simply states facts. She provides no editorial opinions, be they hers or G4TV's. The most controversial thing she says is something to the effect of, "Nothing is better than being able to yell at Shepherd." If anyone took that as something more than puffery or a slick tagline, naivety doesn't begin to describe that person's problems. I imagine they are the kind of person who gets suckered into ponzi schemes because a random stranger offhandedly says it was a good idea. Honestly guys... come on...

Although I have to say, there is more to being sexy than boobs and skimpy clothes. Lots more. TONS more actually.
